If you have 3com905b, the PNP version, your best bet is to boot up with
dos diskette and run the configuration utility to disable pnp. The you can
assign irq and io the will remain permanent. Or you can mess around with
isapnp on the linux side:)

Larry;

I have my system set up just like you described and have not had
trouble. I'm currently running redhat 6.0 (2.2.5-22) and before that
5.2. The hardware is ASUS P2B.

Not seeing this problem before I can only suggest a couple of things.

One would be to replace your IDE cables.

Another idea is to place the ZIP on the CDROM channel. It sounds like
you may have allready tried some of the different possiblities. If so you
may want to double check the Zip Install datasaheets for any possible
changes to jumper settings. At this time you may want to just make sure
the drive is fine by configuring it as a master on its own IDE port.

Possible mother board problem (: Didn't want to suggest this but hyou
may want to try the Zips youve worked with so far in a different machine.

The Zip and the harddisk might not be compatiable. A long time ago I ran
into a problem with two good IDE drives that just would not work together
on the same port. Litterally spent hours on it. Since I work with
IDE dirves almost once a week this one really frustrated me, because there
is usally a solution.

Sorry I can't provide a stronger possiblity. Assuming the drives are
good then I would look at hardware next. I suppose that there might be a
remote possiblity of a software issue but if this is a generic install I
can't think what it might be.

Thanks
Dave

One question on the Dell Inspiron FAQ is "will installing Linux on my
machine invalidate the warranty", and the answer is "NO". That's not all
the way to "supporting" Linux, but at least they don't deprecate it.

RH6.0/Mandrake also runs great on my 7000, 266MHz, 64MB RAM, Rage LT Pro
8MB, 14" LCD.

hi all

You may want to try:
    insmod parport
    insmod imm

Imm being the newer more versatile driver. This works well for me.

Great stuff, but I would be surprised if there weren't a few folks
with brand name educations right there with you -- maybe from Woods
Hole? Academia is not always a completely pointless exercise.

Note that some drives will funtion quite well as slaves on there own IDE port.
It pays to check every drive against the manufactures data. This does sound
like a a configuration issue, but one should not forget the possiblity of a BIOS
issue. Hopefully they are being Autodetected properly, then again it may pay to
manually configure every thing.

Thanks for the response, but 'been there, done that'. I have tried
every combination of the Cd-Rom and Zip on both IDE0 and IDE1 except
moving the hard drive! Thats what's making me crazy! The drive mounts,
but it is unreliable in reading/writing. And I have tried two different
Zip drives! I've been using SCSI Zip drives with Linux for over a year,
and I'm familiar with the fdisk partitions that Linux and Winwoes use,
so the mounting is nothing new.

Again, thanks for the response, maybe someone has another idea?

Chad,

That's true about the LCD screen being totally different than a traditional
monitor, and not having traditional "scan frequencies".

Including a section in your X config file which contains the info which
would correspond to a 60hz scan frequency has done the trick on my laptop.
My box has a Chips&Tech 65554 chipset with 2meg vid mem. It works like a
champ. Here is my config file I'm using with MetroX.

Section "Files"
    LogFile "/var/log/Xerrors"

I wrote the config file from scratch, because the configuration utility
didn't even have an entry for selecting this particular chipset. I have
virtual res of 1024x768 enabled, although this screen has a max physical res
of 800x600.

Perhaps you'll find further info, or even a working config file for your box

Write back if I can help you figure more out!

Hi Dan;

Actually there are many RPMs available that make use of the /opt tree.
Some of these are compiler snap shots, having this directory as a place to
put experimental stuff is very useful. A one time a few binary Tarballs
floated around that expected to put every thing in the /opt directory. I
find it useful for binarys that are not locally compiled nor are RPMS.
This allows the freedom of using a package manager for the core system and a
place to put the other nice stuff out there.

Since almost everything on a computer is optional maybe we need a better name
for this directory.

Dave
