I believe this card is the S3 Trio 64V+ card, which is supported
by XFree86,3.3.3.1, using the XF86_S3 x-server.

Steve said his hard drives are SCSI. Most BIOSes will try to boot
the IDE device first. So we are installing LILO and a bootimage
on an IDE drive but root is on a SCSI drive.
In article <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, Matt Cole wrote:

Install kernel source and make a kernel and bootimage. Use RPM or just go
cd /usr/src
# (pick a nearby mirror)
lynx -source http://ftp.us.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.2/linux-2.2.10.tar.gz >
linux-2.2.10.tar.gz
mv linux linux-redhat
tar xzvf linux-2.2.10.tar.gz
mv linux linux-2.2.10
ln -s linux-2.2.10 linux
cd linux
make mrproper
# (be sure to set module versions info on)
make xconfig
make dep && make clean && make modules && make bzImage && make modules_install
Now use fdisk or cfdisk to partition your LS120 diskette.
Then make a file system and copy the bootimage there.
badblocks /dev/hda1 12000 | tee /tmp/bad
mke2fs -m0 -l /tmp/bad /dev/hda1 12000
mount -t ext2 /dev/hda1 /mnt
cp /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/bzImage /mnt/bz2.2.10
And then set up LILO. It's not that hard. Put the conf file
on the LS120 so you don't lose it.
cp /boot/boot.b /etc/lilo.conf /mnt
cat > /mnt/message <<YOW

Ooops. Root is on a SCSI drive in this example, and the bootimage
is on the LS120.
message = /mnt/message
image = /mnt/bz2.2.10
root = /dev/sda2 # or whereever your root is.

I have an IDE CD-Changer, a TEAC C68E, it runs under Linux without any
problems, better than under NT, you only have to install the eject-package,
you will need this for changing the CDs.

There is a performance overhead in loading and freeing modules, so unless
you are always adding and removing hardware, most of your system should
be compiled into the kernel
Some sample exceptions:
1) file systems. I use vfat once a week or less, so there is no need
to devote memory for it
2) Strange network protocols. If I need IPv6 or EQL or IPX, I can
load it dynamically, but for my normal every day PPP and ethernet,
there is no advantage having them only as module since they are
always loaded.
3) device sharing. You can use incompatible devices on the same port
if you swap modules. For example a QCam camera and a ZIP drive may
not co-exist, but you can remove the support for one before you
probe the other.

Compadres,
My question: is there some kind of "disk doctor" for linux that I can use to
investigate- maybe even cure- a disk problem?
I've been getting some read errors on my disk at boot for a few days (indeed,
occasionally even a few during installation a few days before).
Errors like:
hda: read_intr error=0x59 DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest Error
hda: read_intr error=0x04 DriveStatus Error
and occasionally:
end_request: I/O Error, dev 03:01, sector 3719774 (consistent addresses)
hda: read_intr error=0x40 Uncorrectable Error LBASect=3719837 sector=3719774
and
ide0: reset: success
error messages
I've not suffered any loss of functionality so I've just left it alone so far.
I now have a lot of disk activity going on even when the system is 0%
occupied; I can't see what it is but dmesg shows the same kind of read errors.
It's a redhat linux 5.0 (2.0.32 kernel) on AMD 486dx100 cpu, 32mb RAM, no
external cache RAM fitted.

I guess there are already a lot of similar
questions, but after trying everything I can find,
I still cannot get my SoundBlaster AWE64 to fully

I am rather frustrated now. Do I have to recompile
the kernel? But I think the default kernel of

What should I do now? Please help me!

I've certainly not had any problems doing precisely what you're asking
about. I can't see any reason in theory why it should be a problem either -
all that's happening is that hdparm sends a few commands to the drive and/or
chipset. Any disk operations that are in progress when the commands are
received should be completed by the drive before it changes any settings,
and if changing those settings necessitates the drive going out of action
for a few ms, or the drive resetting, then Linux should queue up any I/O
requests until the drive becomes available again.

According to 'man bru' there is an option called -X that triggers the
use of the bruxpat file. I use the version that came with Red Hat 5.0
and when I try to use that option bru tells me that the option isn't
recognized. I don't know if -X is supported in PE or if this is a bug.
Perhaps you need the professional version of bru in order to get -X to
work.
