In particular there's a CD-Writing-HOWTO that you should
look at. Start there. If the drive is supported then
you'll be in good shape.

That's the way my current installation of RH 6.0 is partitioned,
and the same with a previous installation of RH 5.2. I have
had no problem booting from LILO in the MBR with either.
I have a 10 Gb drive, which with LBA enabled in my bios looks
like C/H/S = 1240/255/63. I have a 7 Gb Win 98 primary partition
with the remaining 3 Gb devoted to Linux as /boot, swap, /home, and
/(root) logical partitions in an extended partition, in that order.
Note: I did have a problem booting with LILO when I originally
installed RH 5.1. I had thought it was just my inexperience, but
perhaps it was something more after all.

Linux implements it's own LBA outside of the BIOS. The trick is, though,
that on your 11.5GB disk, you either have to boot from a floppy or a
partition which resides under the 1024 cylinder barrier (504MB). Once
Linux is booted, you'll be able to access the entire disk, even though
your BIOS doesn't directly support it.

Well, I personally like my Abits, but Asus is just as good.
I have an Abit BP6 as the main work machine, and now one at
home also. Fine little board for a toy machine.
However, if price is no object, there's no question that
one of the SuperMicro boards with onboard UltraII SCSI is
the way to go. VERY stable boards, great for servers.

If you're trying to get your Windows software to run under Linux, you're
probably out of luck. *Some* of it may work under WINE, but by no means
everything. But without running WINE *or a commercial equivalent), Windows
software simply won't run under Linux (and vice versa). Nor have I heard
of anyone getting IE working even with WINE.
See http://www.winehq.com/ for more info on WINE, if you are still
interested.

Subject: Starne ATAPI ZIP Problems
Date: 2 Aug 1999 06:20:38 GMT
Hi,
I have some problems with my Iomega internal ATAPI ZIP drive.
Whenever I try to mount a disk formatted with MSDOS filesystem
I am not able to do this. When I call fdisk I get the following
output. (I use the SCSI emulation, but it is the same when I
use the plain IDE floppy driver (CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDEFLOPPY))
When I create an ext2 partition all works fine...
...but when I insert the ext2 disk into an Iomega external
SCSI ZIP drive on another computer under Linux it recognizes
the disk as MSDOS formatted on partition 4 ???????
(I use Kernel 2.2.10-ac12 on both machines)
Any help??

Ok, I was planning on having a similar setup: scsi and ide. A large IDE hd for
storage that shouldn't have to be accessed all that often, and later, when I
can afford it, a scsi drive to store my OSes and mirrors of CDs for writing.
How will IDE be on a dual celeron system? Will Linux know enough to take
advantage of the other celeron when IDE needs it?
Thanks,
Jeremy

Subject: Re: HELLLLPPPPPP !!! I just installed RedHat 6.0 - I have a Voodoo 3000
AGP....
Date: Mon, 2 Aug 1999 00:35:41 +0200
Hi , maybe a solution to your problem :
Maybe it isn't the drive for your monitor but your monitor isn't set for
high resolution
(since you can get Xwindows started nothing wrong with the driver.)
If you have set Hsync and Vsync to one frequency and not to a range than you
can have this problem. (I had this problem, not with a Voodoo but Cirrus
Logic card.)
things to do :
-Press "ctrl alt +" or "ctrl alt -" at once.
No change is expected but if you have a better screen display witch is all
right for you read this only if you have a lot of time and Linux is your
hobby.
First read usr/doc/howto/Xfree86-HOWTO file. Especially section 4.2
troubleshooting. (READ THE WHOLE FILE)
(Here you find the probeonly command.)
Read also usr/doc/HOWTO/XFree86-video-Timing-HOWTO file (very technical but
the first sections explain a lot of the Hsync and Vsync, you need this
information).
-Run the probeonlycommand as shown in section 4.2
Now you have created a file witch gives you a lot of information and blabla
If you see lines such as :" (--)SVGA: mode "1152x864" needs hsync freq of
43.27 kHz. Deleted. "
(SVGA can also be MACH64 S3V TGA etc...)
then you can correct this problem of large fonts (and only 8bpps) on the
screen.
-start the computer
-login as root
-don't go to X-windows (keep everything in plain text).
If you go directly in X trie to disable this. (So at every startup after
login in you have to type: startx ,to get in X-windows )
This is to make sure that you can login even if the monitor and graphic card
aren't set right. :-)
If you do so you are in linux but only at the commandline (hopefully I say
this correct,
I'm from Holland so spelling is not my specialty :-) )
-Now start XF86Setup just type this and hit enter.
( note : XF86Setup, Xconfigurator an xf86config are all programs witch set
your graph. card, monitor and etc..)
Here you can set up some input devices and your monitor and Graph. card.
As you see on top you can configure the mouse, keyboard, etc and .. Monitor
and Graph. card.
-chose monitor
above the monitor you can see Horizontal and Vertical.
If you see only for instance Vertical 60 and not Vertical 60-70
then your monitor is set for only Vertical scanning freq. of 60 Hz. (this
is
the Vsync.)
The same is it with the Horizontal (Hsync.)
-Look at the manual witch came with the monitor.
and set the Hsync and Vsync in a range and not in a single frequency.
Be careful though don't push your luck and try to get it all.
Note that HSync is in KHz.
VSync is in Hz.
Give it a range witch will be well under the limit of your monitor but is
more then SVGA asks you to give.
(for both : Vsync and Hsync.)
If this doesn't work you have to configure card in XF86Setup..:-)
Sometimes this screen can be set out line. I mean it can go to the right or
left but after ending
the XF86Setup program everything should be oke
Note : I discribed everything in SVGA mode but you have a Voodoo card so
SVGA can be
S3V TGA MACH64 etc.. depending on the chipset Voodoo usese
I AM A NEWBIE SO DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK.
