  You must recompile the kernel as using APM and
modify, if you use RedHat Linux, /etc/rc.d/init.d/halt.
You modify the entry
        command="halt"
to
        command="halt -p"

  I could solve this problem to try above.

ok... this may not apply to you, but this works on my slackware 4.0.
I've tried sblive.o and the emu10k1 driver and they work fine.

here it is:

I'll paste in the reply I gave to the other gentleman about getting the
driver working with anything other than 2.2.5. Assuming you're using a
newer kernel you need to use insmod with the -f option to force the
module
to load. As for the two programs at once, I'm afraid I can't help you
with
that. I'd take a guess that as the driver code is still reasonably new
it
just doesn't support that function yet, but I may well be wrong.
Good luck,
Bp.

You'll need to add the following lines to the rc file that loads modules
on
your system (rc.modules under Slack, I'm not sure for others)
insmod -f sblive.o
insmod -f soundcore.o

The reason for using insmod with the -f switch as opposed to modprobe is
that if you use any kernel other than those specified in the driver
names
(ie 2.0.36-0.7 or 2.2.5) then modprobe refuses to load the module. The
-f
switch forces insmod to load the module regardless. The driver should
work
with kernels newer than their numbers, support for older ones is not
guaranteed. I use a 2.2.10 kernel and it gets along just fine.

I've a sb live! as well... just wondering how did you get it to work? I
try to install the file from www.soundblaster.com, but it only supports
kernel 2.2.5, and it doesn't allow 2 programs to play sounds

If all else fails, get the 2.2.5 kernel, that oughta work.

Can someone help!!

I've had no success in setting up an AOpen FM56p PCI modem with
Linux-Mandrake 6.0.

Tech support from RomNet only goes as far as a 'generic' approach and,
like a previous writer, I get 'Modem Ready'; 'Initializing
Modem'(forever!) or 'Modem is busy' on trying to connect.

 Querying modem gives blank AT responses.

Try running it with the external cache turned off, and see if it is a bad cache. You
may be able to achieve solid and reliable P100 performance with no L2 cache if it is
a bad cache. I've often seen L2 cache blown out on machines where the CPU was
installed with poor attention to ESD procedures.

hi ..

I am trying to compile my source file to get access to A/D card.
This is inside my source file (ie. ad.c)

    #include <stdio.h>
    #include <stdlib.h>
    #include <asm/io.h>

    int HI, LOW;

    int main (void) {
        LOW=1;
        HI=0;
        ioperm(0x22d,2,1);
        /* initialize A/D card  for base+14 and base+13, where base=544
in decimal */
        outb(LOW, 0x22d);
        outb(HI, 0x22e);
        return 0;
    }

i compiled using this command "gcc ad.c -o ad", then i got this error
message:

    /tmp/ccc00289: In function `main':
    /tmp/ccc00289(.text+0x36): undefined reference to `outb'

I went from 32 Mbyte to 64 Mbyte and the speed increase was dramatic. I
had almost constant hard drive activity when I had 32 Mbyte, obviously
the swap space was being heavily used. With 64 Mbyte, this has
completely stopped.

Ok, I will be installing windows 98 second edition, windows NT 4.0 workstation,

post that I should install these in the order they are listed above. Many
people have also given good recommendations as to how to do my partitioning
scheme. The question for me now, however, is how should I go about making
these partitions? I don't want to pay money for something like PartitionMagic,
and preservation of previous data is not an issue, as there is no previous
data.  Any recommendations?

Thanks for always being so helpful,

The most important point on these mobos, and all Via MVP3 series chipset
motherboards, is cacheability of main RAM. It's linearly related to the size
of the L2 cache, where 512k L2 cache=128 Meg cacheable ram, 1M cache = 256 Meg,
and 2 Meg = 512 Megs.

If you are going to add a lot of memory, look for one with 1 or 2 Meg cache.

I've had good luck with the VA 503+ so far, with 5 servers running mostly 24x7
on Linux and NT with no real problems. I use an Epox at home, with 512k cache
and 128 Meg RAM. It's a great little machine, and when I'm running X windows
with Netscape and a couple of Apps, top says:

Mem:  128028K av, 122848K used,   5180K free,  52864K shrd,  22288K buff
Swap: 104384K av,   6080K used,  98304K free                 42428K cached

So I'm using most of my memory, but only 6 Megs of swap. I kinda wish I'd of
gotten the 1 Meg cache version...

Use fdisk. This exists for all the operating systems you mention. For
best results use the fdisk appropriate to the OS you are about to
install.

Trying to make this concise-
I have an AverMedia TV98(BT878/Philips NTSC tuner), kernel 2.2.10, bttv
drivers 0.6.4e (although the included bttv drivers in 2.2.10 have the same
problem). When I try to use xawtv, I get a fine picture, but no sound. I'm
installing the bttv module with "card=10 radio=0" and have uncommented
"-D_RESET_MSP_HAUPPAUGE" in the Makefile. The msp3400 patch has been applied.
I have tried setting "mixer = mixer" is .xawtv and trying all of the values
I get from the error message, but none of them work. All that happens is that
I get static and popping noises from my speakers after I load the modules
but before I run xawtv. When I do run xawtv, the static and popping either
stop or get very faint. I can hear the TV sound very faintly in the background.

When I type dmesg, it appears that all the modules are loading without
problems. I cannot, for the life of me, figure this problem out. This is
the most trouble I have EVER had getting a piece of hardware to work with
Linux, and I've been using Linux for years on many different computers.
The AverMedia TV98 is a pretty popular card, so there must be SOMEONE who's
gotten it to work with Linux, unless it just plain doesn't work.

Just a mal-apropos to the heading:

Iomega ZIP drives sometimes suffer from a phenomena known as "the click
of death" - a hardware error described by that sound. Perhaps an idea to
test it on a windows machine - just to see if it works at all. The
"click of death" thing you should be able to find more about on web, but
if that's what you have - that drive is doomed.

"Best" sort of depends on how much money you're willing to spend--VA
and other Linux VARs offer some impressive looking laptops, but they
are expensive. On the cheaper end, I purchased a Fujitsu E340 for

Arrrggghhhh!!!!!!!!

And as a result anyone who actually knows what their doing is now forced
into Plug'N'Pray Hell. I'd much rather have control over the situation
(Which I will admit with 'some' bios's I still have, but with others a
poorly behaved card shifts things around on you and boom) I just spent ages
getting a 'non-supported' nic up and running under Unixware, if I had the
option of manually forcing the irq/port it would have been a 1/2 hour job
because it is perfectly compatible with a supported card, except it uses a
port the driver didn't have in it's 'possible' list.

I'm interested in 3dlabs VX1, I'd like to know is there
drivers for Linux and OS2? I know 3Dlabs doesn't
support these operation systems, but I hope their
partnerships do. Thanks!

Subject: FS: 2x 19" HP Monitors ; $75 each
Date: Wed, 11 Aug 1999 04:17:40 GMT

    The units are located in Knoxville, TN, 37922.

    They are of the following models :

                    HP 98752A
                    HP 98751A

    Both have a Triniton tube and 3-BNC plugs(making them Sync-on-green
models).

    The reason for their low cost is that the have a little of the paint on
the front rubbed off(a dark-grey, rubbed off around the edge to the
underlying light-grey).

    Anyhow, pictures are available for anyone interested.

    Once again, I'd like to get $75 US for each.

                                                    Thanks,
                                                    Kent Rankin
