I'm using the Diamond Stealth 3D 2000, with the ViRGE chip, and I'm having
some problems getting it to not flicker with my monitor(Iiyama Vision
Master Pro). Under Windows, I run it at 1024x768 with 16bpp colour. It runs
fine and without any flickering. However X with the same setting has so
much flicker it's almost unbearable to look at for any length of time.
Under Windows, if I set it for a generic ViRGE chip I get flickering nearly
as bad as X, but if I set it for specifically the Diamond Stealth, the
refresh kicks up and is nice looking. Anyone got any ideas on how to set X
so it will have a better refresh rate?
Thanks in advance!

Is it PCI? Chances are that it is a "Winmodem" which isn't really a
modem. There are PCI modems, but they are rare.

Internal modems don't use a serial port, they replace one.

If you find an older version (kernel 0.98 or before) everything works fine (I
started with 0.96 on such a computer: 386, 4MB. For new kernels, try to run
them without ELF support (only "a.out"). I still have my old computer running
under slackware, kernel 0.99?. Trying to run X made me buy
1st: a new hard disk
2nd: more memory
3rd: a new computer
Everything else is still fine - enjoy it!

Did you try using RedMon on the Ghostscript site? This is what I used for
printing to my BJC-5000. One PC running Linux and the other running Win98
with the BJC-5000 connected. This is a serious WinPrinter, but RedMon does
the trick. Check it out on the Ghostscript home page.

Diamond V770 running as smooth as silk (SuSE linux 6.1 2.2.5 kernel).
Dowloaded the drivers from the Nvidia site, untarred and installed them.
Used XF86Setup to configure X-windowing. No need to probe the card nor

It sounds like you haven't told lilo how to find your new kernel.
Simply adding the information to your lilo.conf file is not enough.
You must also run the /sbin/lilo program to record the information
where it can be found during at boot time.
When the device is properly detected, it will be identified as
/dev/sd? (with ? replaced by the next available letter), and the data
will be in the partition /dev/sd?4 in the standard format. You can
change this with fdisk if you plan to use the Zip drive only with this
system.

I know it's already been answered for you - and correctly for a Xeon too -
but the answer is more complex. As I understand it, Xeons you cant mix
because they redundantly check each other which means that they have to be
identical, other posts have reported using different mixes of processors
successfully though.

If Caldera is anything like RH6.0, you must get the lastest build of
ftape to get it to compile. The development snapshots are what you
need.
This tarball, ftape-4.x-1999_06_30.tar.gz, compiled fine on my

You asked for it and are going to get it.
For a simple generic every day user linux is far to complex and powerfull.
John en Jane Doe don not need login/logout and do not want to mount a floppy
just to write some files to it. Most people are happy using Windows based
software 'cause they are familiar with it and do not wish to start adopting
to some new OS. I'd rather sell Windows 98 to some poor sod buying his first
computer without previous encounters of the digital kind. OK linux might be
cheaper and is a great pinch in the bumm for Bill G., but the newbie would
be screaming his/her head of after bootstrapping the machine.

You're right. The monopolistic view of Bill G. is over the top. Heck I play
games on Windows 98 but use Linux (SuSE 6.1, kernel 2.2.5) for a SMB
file/printer -server (SAMBA) 'cause it costs a fraction of NT server and can
be run on modest hardware (Intel 200 Mhz MMX, 64 MB RAM, 5 GB drive, Matrox
Millenium 2 Mb, 4 speed cdromplayer, 10 Mbit Realtek NIC). I even use Linux
to do wordprocessing (WP 8 or StarOffice 5) instead of bloatware Office
97/2000.
No alternative, what about Mac, Dec Alpha, HP-hardware, plenty beyond M$ I'd
say.

Doubledare you're right. No need to get frustrated about it. Most of the
linux users have been playing around with different OS-ses. John and Jane
Doe are just happy to have a running machine that helps them get their job
done.

David, I would first suggest "Now You're Talking" to study for your license.
You will find packet radio activity on 2-meter vhf bands in
metropolitan areas. Entry level ham licensing would allow you to
transmit there. I have no experience with hf bands more suitable for
long range transmisisons, but I would guess there is less packet
activity. Transmissions over greater distances requires some type
of repeater system just as voice communications would. Besides,
small vhf antenna sizes are work better for apartment dwellers.
I'm sure you could get going for tww hundred dollars. You'll need a
tnc (terminal node controller and a 2-meter tranceiver( $50 and $100).
The book goes into greater detail.
As for interfacing these items to a Linux box, I know it can be done,
but I have not done it. I am sure there is something useful to you at
http://sunsite.unc.edu/LDP/HOWTO/AX25-HOWTO.html or some other Linux
Documentaion site. I found this sort of stuff at /usr/doc/HOWTO on my
Linux6.0 installation. Jimmy KC5WPY

or do like discribed in the README:
1. Determine your kernel sound modules installation location
(usually /lib/modules/2.x.y/misc)
2. Copy the appropriate driver to that location as emu10k1.o
(eg. /lib/modules/2.x.y/misc/emu10k1.o)
3. Unload all existing soundcard drivers, including soundcore
4. Remove all old soundcard references from /etc/conf.modules
5. Add a new reference to the driver in /etc/conf.modules:
(eg. "alias sound emu10k1" or "alias char-major-14 emu10k1")
6. If your kernel is compiled with version information, add the following=
=20
lines to /etc/conf.modules after the previous statement:
pre-install emu10k1 insmod soundcore
post-remove emu10k1 rmmod soundcore
7. Load the driver: "modprobe emu10k1"

Subject: I'm going mad!!!! over a Microcom Deskporte 28.8P External Modem
Date: Fri, 13 Aug 1999 20:01:19 -0400
Here's the pitch:
Can someone please, please, please help me set this up.I've used
setserial -a -g (even tried autoconfig) to probe the ports and can't find a
damn thing. I've used kppp(?- I think that's what it's called) to try and
find the modem but it tells me that either it can't find anything or it's
busy. How do I get the info on the parallel ports? Is the parallel port what
external modems use? Or is it some com port? I've probed ttyS0-3 and my
modem is not there. I tried the same with cua0-3, same result nothing. Tried
setserial on lp0 and got an error. All I ask is to be able to surf IN linux
to learn it. I don't think this is to much to ask, do you? Since I've been
inside linux( the Xgui-Gnome-works fine, all my drives are there and
mountable, my sound card is working;-)-see, I HAVE been reading the mans-)
I've come to realize it's potential and when I boot Win98 I feel
so........closed in, restricted.....well, I can't really DO anything, it's
all done for me whether I like it or not, linux is cool, I NEED to learn
but, I've been reading mans for 5 days and still my modem is not seen:-( I
read the modem HOWTO at least 480 times and the setserial HOWTO is never to
be forgotten. I've thrown the useless peice of paper it was printed on out
'cause I will rely soley on the burned in imprint upon my poor battered
brain. I've been going to bed at 5 or 6:00 a.m. and getting up at 9 or 10:
a.m. for at least forever. Linux is a great woman but boy is she ever
demanding. She sucks my will and drains my energy at every turn, but, aren't
all wild rides the best? I'm going insane.......I have nightmares about ppp0
and kppp and cua0 the worst are the lp0's they haunt even my waking
moments.....please for the love of sanity(mine) someone help me..........)
Thank You.
