Be sure the DMA Channels you are specifying are the same as what the
BIOS is reporting on boot--you can't just pick them! (I tried...)

I have the same card, but only with the utp connector.

Had that too. I think it's a bug in the RH install script, because if
you switch to alt+F3 or alt+F4 you'll see that it tried to probe the
card at address 0x0 and not the standard 0x300 that autoprobe does and
subsequently hanging the whole system.

The drivers disk from Intel contains an utility called softset2. Run
that from dos. Change the io and irq setting to values you know won't
conflict with other hardware (eg. io=0x300, irq=10) and disable PnP if
your nic supports it. Then you should have no problems using the card

First install RH with no network support. After installing do cat
/proc/interrupts. Pick an irq that's not in use and change the card to
that value with the above mentioned softset2 util.

What version of Xfree86 do you have?
I have 3.3.3.1 ( I believe ), and the setup program had mine. It's also a
jaton card with that chipset. Download the newest version of XFREE86
and go from there - or it's also on the redhat linux6.0 disk.

If the serial ports isn't detected at boot it might be because your
kernel is compiled without support for your serial port.
> How do I get the info on the parallel ports?
You will also have to use a kernel which has support for parallel ports.
> Is the parallel port what external modems use? Or is it some com

Most external modems use serial ports. However, I know of at least one
modem which is connected to the parallel port. As you ask, and as your
modem has a "P" in its name you might be the owner of such a strange
beast. What does your cable look like that should be connected to your
computer? If the DSUB connector on the cable is female it is a serial
cable. If the DSUB connector on the cable is male it is parallel cable.
> I tried the same with cua0-3, same result nothing. Tried

You will not be able to use setserial on /dev/lp*. But that is probably
not necessary.
I don't know if it is possible to use a parallel modem in Linux, but my
guess is that it should work. Make sure that your kernel supports your
parallel port and make a link from /dev/modem to /dev/lp0 or maybe it
should be /dev/lp1. Then try to start minicom and see if the modem
responds to any AT commands. You might also have to change some CMOS or
jumper setting of your parallel port, maybe it matters if it is SPP, ECP
or EPP.

I can't start any X-Server with this card (S3 Trio 3D/2x, 86C368, AGP).
I tried any S3 server, the standard SVGA and VGA16 server and a new

Are there any parameters that help?

I don't know about every modem on the market, but I know the following:
Most PCI modems are winmodems.
Most "modems" with lucent circuits are winmodems.
I would guess that you haven't really made an upgrade.

That one should work fine with the ALSA driver, I think you could get it
from http://alsa.jcu.cz/ or maybe it is http://www.alsaproject.org.
Installing this driver isn't trivial, but there should be an ALSA HOWTO
on those sites.

It should also work with the built in support in the 2.2 kernel, however
ALSA is said to have some advantages.

Instead of typing "make config" you might want to try "make menuconfig"
or if you have X running "make xconfig".

The 2.2 kernel is so big that you will have to do "make bzImage"
instead.

Edit the file /etc/XF86Config manually or run the xf86config program
again. In the "Monitor" section of XF86Config there are two lines
looking something like this:
HorizSync 30-69
VertRefresh 50-110
Those are the one to edit. Make sure that you enter the right values
from the manual of you monitor, the monitor might take damage of too
high refresh rates.
Then your XF86Config file should also have some lines looking something
like this:
Modeline "1152x864" 92.00 1152 1208 1368 1474 864 865 875 895
Modeline "1024x768" 85.00 1024 1032 1152 1360 768 784 787 823
Modeline "800x600" 50.00 800 856 976 1040 600 637 643 666 +hsync
+vsync
Modeline "640x480" 31.50 640 680 720 864 480 488 491 521
Modeline "640x400" 25.18 640 664 760 800 400 409 411 450
Modeline "320x200" 25.18 320 336 384 400 200 204 205 225
doublescan
If you have more than one line for each resolution it should be enough
to edit the refresh frequency ranges as described above. The Xserver
will select the best modeline to fit your frequencies for each
resolution. If you only have one modline for a resolution that one will
still be used even though you changed the frequencies. Adding a new
Modline isn't easy, but you might get some hints from
/var/X11R6/lib/doc/Monitors and /var/X11R6/lib/doc/VideoModes.doc. The
Modeline mini-HowTo might also help, you might have it in
/usr/doc/faq/howto/mini/Modeline.gz.
Then again, it is probably easier to run xf86config again.

The compiled kernel's around 1130K at the least for our 2.2.5 kernel,

Is there some way to modify the kernl to do this/or some way to make

The above means that your compiler was unable to compile the file
persist.o which later should be linked together with other files to
become a program. The cause of this problem is probably some error in a
source file which might be named something like persist.c. These errors
were probably printed on some lines above and would be necessary to see
to make any better guess what causes your problem.

It means that when the program is run that process gets the user-id of
the owner of the program file. This is a common way to run programs
which needs root privelegies without first having to do su to become
root. You can check which files have this with ls -al, example:
ls -al /bin/p*
-r-sr-xr-x 1 root bin 12180 Dec 6 1995 /bin/ping*
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root bin 35859 May 25 1996 /bin/ps*
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root bin 4917 Aug 14 1995 /bin/pwd*
The above files are readable (r) and executable (x or s) by the owner
(root), the group (bin) and everyone else. The files ps and pwd are also
writeable by the owner (root). The file ping has an 's' instead of an
'x' in the owner field. This means that the file is suid as explained
above.
> Also, the documents said that I can fix this by doing a chmod command

> idea on how to do this. Any advice?
First check with ls, the file might already be suid. Then if it is not,
make it suid after you have become root:
ls -al /usr/bin/kppp
su
chmod 4711 /usr/bin/kppp
exit

I would guess that the remote server logs you out for some reason. Try
to search your logfiles like /var/log/messages and /var/log/syslog to
see if you can find some explanation. Maybe you have the wrong password
or give the password in the wrong way.

Hi,
I have a Sharp Actius A250 notebook and have installed RedHat 6.0 on it.
So far, none of the built-in peripherials works except the video, which
I managed to get 800x600 true color.
However, I can't get neither the modem, sound nor Network to work. It
has a Realtek RTL8139A PCI Fast Ethernet NIC built-in and I have tried
the version 1.80a driver (written by Donald Becker) rtl8139.c without luck.
Whenever I try to 'ifconfig eth0 up', it gives me the following message:
SIOCSIFFLAGS: Resource temporarily unavailable
I can ping localhost and ping the self IP address and has no problem,
but the eth0 interface is never up and running.
I can live without its sound nor modem, but the LAN is a must.
Thanks a lot,
Edwin

I own a KDS Visual Sensations model VS195. It has been running stable for
about six months now with almost constant use. The only real difficulty
with it is that it's moire did need a little tweeking at the higher
resolutions/refresh rates to provide a uniform screen patern.
In terms of refresh rates....I have run the monitor as high as 85Hz but
typically run it at 70-75Hz depending on the color depth I require (video
adapter is my limiting factor) A mode line which I have not had any
problems with (read that as it is always able to sync up) is the following
for 1600x1200 @ 70.4Hz
ModeLine "1600x1200" 190.06 1600 1672 2032 2176 1200 1202 1214 1240
NOTE: Your video card may not be able to handle this ramdac setting.
Check your adapter's manual and verify the limits of it's range. Remember
also that the XFree servers will cut (or you will recieve a blank screen)
if either your monitor or your video adapter is out of tolerance.
Also remember the at the bandwidth of your monitor is substantially
greater than that of most consumer video adapters, so most likely your
maximum resolution will be limited by the oscilator on your card.
Remember also that you can easily calculate the correct Xwindows parameter
(for details see the release notes and howto for XFree86)

I tried using the latest x server I could find for Debian Linux without
success. I've since begun using the card with VESA Framebuffer support
provided by the Linux 2.2.x kernel, and the Framebuffer X Server provided
by Xfree86. This works okay, though not stellar. Then again, if you were
after stellar performance you wouldn't be using a 6215, right?
One other thing. My system boots to Caldera OpenDOS (i.e. an MS-DOS clone)
first then uses Loadlin to boot into the Linux kernel. Just before running
loadlin I execute SISVBE.EXE which enables Vesa Bios Extension 2.0 support
for the SIS cards. You may have to do something similar if you decide
to persue the VESA Framebuffer approach to supporting this card.
Keep in mind that in order to get VESA Framebuffer support working you'll
need to compile a customized 2.2.x Kernel. There is a Framebuffer
mini-HOWTO on the net. Search for it on yahoo, lycos, etc.
Good luck.

Mine is SB 128... but it DOESN'T work at all! When I do sndconfig,
it tells me that "sox: /dev/dsp not known". Does anyone know what it means?
How can I get it work??? My kernel is 2.2.9

Hey all,
I'm running an epox mb with a k6-2 300mhz and its working fine. I'll try my k6-2
450 when it gets here (its backordered :( ). On my other computer i was running
the k6-2 300 on a unidentifed mb. I couldn't get windows to work even, it turns
out my external cache was bad. Disabling it in the bios stopped the errors. but
've been running the 300 onlinux 24/7 with no problem. The temp is about 110
(acording to the bios). I suspect teh chips may have been restamped. I know my
friend got a restamped p2 300...it crashed on him alot, ad he happened to find a
prog that told him what it really was. It turned out to be a 266 overclocked to
300. Linux pushes the cpu alot harder then windoze does, so overclocking is
probably a no no. AMD's i heard don't over clock too well, intel leaves a little
of a buffer so you can get away w/overclocking. However i have read never to run
linux on a overclocked(even an intel chip) b/c of the stress it puts on it.
