I have a Matrox Millennium G200-AGP and when i tried to install linux
debian it didn't work. The only way to see something in XWindow system is
to configure it as a vga16. Does anyone know what to do?

Subject: Direct ethernet connection under Linux
Hello everyone,
I get a problem with ethernet connection under linux:
I want to connect 2 laptops, both equipped with PCMCIA 10/100BaseT
ethernet card. So I took a cross-over cable (not the normal twisted-pair
one)
My setup is the following:
IP=130.60.93.222 resp. 130.60.93.223
Mask=255.255.255.0, Broadcast=130.60.93.255 (for both hosts)
Under Windows98, it's no problem, both cards detect a 100Mbit/s mode.
(The actual transfer rate is lower.)
When I booted ONE host to Linux, ethernet cards can still detect
100Mbit/s mode, but there is no connection available. Then I pulled out
this crossed-over cable from the linux host, connected this linux host
with normal twisted-pair cable to our switch, (without reboot and
changing any network information), it can problemlessly connect to
internet
(ping, ftp, telnet...).
When both hosts booted to Linux, there was still no improvement, ping
showed
no response from the other host.
/var/log/messages tells me
kernel: eth0: Setting full-duplex based on MII #0 link partner
capability of 41e1.
The ifconfig command tells me
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:60:08:B5:73:E2
inet addr:130.60.93.222 Bcast:130.60.93.255

TX packets:44 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:44
collisions:0 txqueuelen:100
Interrupt:10 Base address:0x100
Does anyone have an idea what I configured wrong under Linux?
BTW, Linux version I use is Mandrake6.0 and Redhat6.0.
Thanks a lot!

Subject: Zip drive
Date: 16 Aug 1999 12:09:15 GMT
I am trying to get my ZIP drive recognized under a linux 2.2 box. I
have been successful with getting it running on an older (2.0) kernel
without any problems. Now, I have a new computer with a new kernel and
I want to get it working on this box.
The drive is an internal (SCSI) drive with the Iomega zip zoom
controller. I tried using the aha152x driver for it, but that leads to
losing its interrupt.
The adapter is recognized (or, so the driver says), but when it tries
to initialise it, it fails with the error message 'Interrupt lost'. I
tried loading the driver as a module ( modprobe aha152x
aha152x=0x140,11 ) and when that didn't work, by putting it in the
kernel itself (with append line in lilo.conf). The resource settings
are correct according to the jumpers on the board and Windows '98
agrees with it.
Any suggestions to fix my problem are appreciated!

I have an Abit BE6 mainboard and am trying to
just run more than 4 ide drives...the 5th drive
is a Quantum Fireball Katana 18.2G. I am not
worried about speed, just being able to use it at
all. I even downloaded and used Quantums utility
to switch the drive to DMA33 mode.
I tried 2.2.11 plus the "draco" patch. The patch
took fine, and upon booting it did indeed see the
controller and even the drive, BUT right after
that when it displays all the drives CHS values,
it would hang on the 5th drive, never displaying
its values. Nothing would get past it except a
reboot. I DISCOVERED THAT IF I UNPLUGGED THE
HPT366 DRIVE, THE SYSTEM WOULD BOOT.
So, next I tried the "eridanus" patch...still no
luck. NEXT, I planned on trying the "ide.2.3.12-
1.patch.3", but I could not get kernels 2.3.12 or
2.3.13 to compile :( Im not new to compiling
kernels, usually I can get them to work. I even
tried enlisting the help of a few friends who
have more experience with fixing broken compiles
than I do, and they couldnt get it to compile
either. Note this was *before* applying the
patch!
I did apply the patch afterwards just to see if
it would take, and it worked fine. Still no
compile though.
SO, to make a long story short, I worked on my
system ALL weekend, and still cannot mount the
drives on my HPT366 adapter. :-( If anyone has
any further suggestions, me and alot of others
want to know. If I ever get it to work 100% I
will post what I did.

Just a hunch where your problem might be..:-)
Are both NIC under win installed as PNP?
(Unless of course you are using kernel version 2.2.10, it has pnp support,
but you have to compile it into a new kernel....:-)
If your cards are PNP this _could_ cause some problems under Linux....
if they are already installed as non-pnp devices..... sorry I can't help,
since I'm new to linux myself....
but if they are installed as PNP ( most of them are) you should disable PNP
on the cards, (look into your floppy for a help or readme-file. After you
disabled pnpray, then you have to install a non-pnp driver under WinXX,
(take the driver from the floppy,)
One last chance to make it work is the Bios, there change the IRQ for the
card from pnp to a non-pnp......

Has anybody had any experience running Gigabit Ethernet adaptors under

I also have a TVCapture98 card. I got it working by giving bttv parameters
card=6 pll=1
That is the entry for the "old" avermedia card, but it works with my setup,
while card=18 (avermedia '98) does not.

I've got the same damn problem and the HOWTO's tell you to do it like we
always did in the past, except there are no kernel options to do it with
except for a few odd ball cards. Geez, not even the old SoundBlaster

No, I am not using the driver from the kernel, that one did not work, I
use the "newest" driver as referred by Readtek's web site, compiled and
replaced the module that come with RH6.0, still no luck.
Strange is, the module loaded fine and [OK] is told when booting,
however, the interface is not working as reported.
Tracing the errors involving "SIOCSIFFLAGS: Resource temporarily
unavailable" looks like it's is some kind of PCI related driver errors, though.
Thanks anyway,
Edwin

Hey Wayne
/dev/modem is actually not your modem, its a link to the actual device. Kinda
like shortcuts in win95, but better. Anyway to get back /dev/modem, do this
command
ln -s /dev/ttySx /dev/modem
That should do it! Note that you need to replace x with the dos comm port
number, minus 1. ie com1 = ttyS0, com2= ttyS1, etc. Note the same thing goes
for /dev/mouse. My /dev/mouse actually points to /dev/ttyS0 (com1). do ls -l
/dev/mouse to see what i'm talking about. Any questions feel free to ask.

If you are using kmod, you can edit /etc/conf.modules and setup some
aliases that supposedly preload the drivers you need. Of course, I
never got this to work (you have to reboot to get your edited version of
conf.modules reread, it seems -- mind boggling). Also, you can place
the modprobe in your boot sequence. Modern init scripts seem to lack
rc.local for some reason, but you can stick one in if necessary.
