I've seen in a couple of places on the web that AMD cpus and TNT video cards
don't play well together. I'm thinking of getting a new system with an AMD
K6-450. What 3D video card should I get that is supported by xfree?

I've searched past posting to this problem, but found no definitive
answer.
For some reason the BIOS for this motherboard does not have a setting
that permits booting without the keyboard. I seen where it's been
suggested that a loopback plug for the keyboard should work, execept I
can seem to find one anywhere.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi!
My LS-120 parallel-port drive works basically fine with Linux,
but everytime the computer accesses it the system cpu usage goes to
100% and it nearly freezes up until the drive operation is completed.
I think the problem has something to do with the parallel-port driver
not working correctly, as it does not use the irq I assigned it.

Installed RH 6.0 on a Gateway E-4200 with a P3/450 and an ATI Rage 128
GL AGP video card.
Can't seem to get an Xserver to find the card or work. Tried the
Mach64 server, but no dice.
If I understand this correctly, I don't need the OpenGL support in
X11, I'll need to find that elsewhere. I just need an Xserver that
will work.
Ah, the joys of running Linux on new hardware . . .

First of all. What is the model of your card? That is not only
Important but vital. Is it a AHA-1522 or a AHA1520 or a AHA2825?
Second what does your EZScsi bios report as its IOport, Card
Scsi Address and IrQ?
on my Adaptek Aha2826 Vesa Local bus card the info I needed as
follows
Scsi IO Address: 7
Scsi Port Address 340
Scsicard IrQ 11
Therefore in Lilo I enter
aha152x=0x340,11,7
try that out.

I have just got my _old_ original Soundblaster Pro
working on my Suse 6.1 system using OSS. When I
tried to play MP3 on the card (using xmms/X11amp),
there was alot of popping and generally poor
playback. I tried switching the IRQ in case there
was an I/O confilct, to no avail.
My question is Is the original Soundblaster Pro
capable of playing MP3's at an acceptable speed?
Or is it a problem with the drivers?
Thanks alot

Ok, so I bought this Intel Dual Pentium Pro board with a built
in 100 mb card and I tossed in an additional 10/100 Intel card.
After I installed RH 6.0 only 1 card was detected. I tried to
use linuxconf to bring up eth1 but negatory.
How can I troubleshoot the second network card? I know there must
be several commands I can use to troubleshoot this problem.
Any help out there?

Date: Tue, 17 Aug 1999 12:07:32 -0500
I installed a third hard disk on a Dell Optiplex XMT 120 as a slave to
the cdrom some months ago. The system runs fine but boot time is over 5
minutes. This has not been a problem until now but I am going to move
the box to a place where it will be turned on and off regularly. As a
result of earlier advice I changed the master/slave relationship between
the 3rd drive and the cd drive but that has had no effect on boot time.
The output of fdisk -l is:

It seems as if you are pretty new at this. For your fist steps I would
recomend that you not look to download any files but instead try running
X out of the box. Type
> XF86Setup
This will attempt to load the lowest common denomonater server and allow
you to graphically configure the X server.

Yes, it means there's no disk in the drive at boot time.
No, it makes no difference what's in fstab.
This is perfectly normal for all removable media drives.

I'm a fairly new linux user, and I've got a few problems.
1. Occasionally when I try to load the ppa module with modprobe ppa so I
can use my zip drive, I get a segmentation fault. If I try it again,
sometimes it works, sometimes not. Does anyone know what type of problem
this is and or how to fix it?
2. When I try to copy or move, or for that matter, do anything to the
floppy, I get "anything: /floppy Operation not supported." Sometimes it
still writes part of the file to the floppy, but usually not most of it.
I'm logged in as root so I don't think it's a permission problem. It's a
REALLY old drive (10+ years) so that could be a problem. Could this
problem and the segmentation fault be related?
I appreciate any help anyone can offer.
Please email me at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Try to boot with a Slackware NFS installation boot floppy. That kernel

The listing in the XFree86 compability thing is for the G400 chipset,
and not for the G400 card. Both cards use the same chipset.

The G400 MAX runs at a higher clock frequency, and supports dual output,
and probably comes with a few other pieces of software that you don't
get on the other one.

Hi,
Just yesterday I stumbled upon this problem at a friend of mine.
He just bought this shinign enw dual Celeron system and wanted to install
Linux on it. He had connected the HD to IDE3 (=ide2) on the board but Linux
install could'nt find the drive.
I added:
ide2=0xd800,0xd807,11
to the command line of the linux boot floppy. It then detected the ide2
interface as it should. Of course, the irq number, 11 here, can vary
according to your setup settings in the Bios (maybe also the I/O mappeing).
We managed to install Suse Linux 6.0 this way. Only problem was that Lilo
didn't know how to handle this device so the system won't autoboot Linux (it
does boot Windblows...)
For now, the system can be brought alive by means of a simple boot floppy.
Hope this helps.
BTW, we found out the correct I/O and IRQ settings by booting with the boot
disk from Suse 6.1 (with the 2.2.7 kernel) this displayed other, read
correct, information than the boot disk of 6.0.
After succesfull aprtitioning and installation, Suse 6.0 asked if we wanted
to create a bootfloppy and put good old 2.0.36 from the CD together with the
added command line parameters on a fresh floppy and the system boots fine
from this disk.
Gert
Tip for Abit: make the extra IDE ports remappable to IDE1 and 2 (ide0/ide1)
