I have three K6-2's, one running Linux (400MHz) with no stability problems
(aside from WinNT and Win98 being inherently unstable of course). Linux
runs rock solid.

I'd recommend a 3Com 3c905* card, but just MHO. They have always worked
great for me, and well supported. PNP is not a problem in my experience.

Hello. If anyone here has successfully gotten
the video capturing abilities of the Trident 9750

on you did it. If anyone knows the video capture
chipset that the Trident 9750 video card uses,
also e-mail me. Also for Windows 98. Thanks

Subject: ATI all in wonder 128 can't setup in Mandrake 6
Date: Sun, 29 Aug 1999 21:19:03 GMT

I can't seem to get my all in wonder 128 to work at all even in mono or
vga 16 mode. I get errors that it can't find video ram, and if I do get to
choose my own supported modes manually and all, at best I start doing the
video test and it locks up with a blank screen when trying to use
Xconfigurator or during the linux installation itself. So I'm stuck with
absolutely no way to run any graphical interfaces in Mandrake 6

Is there any way to get even the minimal vga support with this card? I've
never used Linux before so I just have it installed on an old 2 gig drive
for testing out and I can't do anything with it so far.

Actually, the Xserver version delivered as part of RH6.0 includes
support for the 3Dlabs Permedia 2 video card. I have such a card and
have had no problems with it.... Support for it was , however, not included
in the Xserver version included with RH5.2 though.... Just update your
Xserver to the latest and make sure you get the 3Dlabs rpm.

Also, I did not like Xconfigurator. I much prefer X86Setup (or something
like that). With this second tool, you are allowed to pick the specific
parameters of your mouse, keyboard, video card and most importantly,
your monitor!

Jorge.

Does this merely mean that they're going to have some 128 bit data registers?

Or does this mean that they are going to have a linear 128 bit address space?

The former would be quite useful for doing graphics, as it lets you
stick lots of data into a register and essentially hit several pixels
in parallel. And while it may make good press, it doesn't mean that
they actually have 128 bit addressing.

There's very little value in greater than 64 bit addressing unless you
actually plan to address more than 4 billion GB of data. And that is a
*ferociously* large number; the only folks that could be touching that
kind of bulk would be those doing heavy duty high energy physics.

And even with applications that require those sorts of quantities of
data, access times on Very, Very Very Large Disk Arrays are such that
it is likely that segmented addressing wouldn't hurt performance overly
much...

hello

I just installed S.u.s.e 6.2 with kernel 2.2.10 and now i'm trying
to get my hp8100 ide burner working. witch worked perfectly under
s.u.s.e 6.1 (2.2.7).

I compiled the new kernel with the same options ( from the CD-Writing
HOWTO) as i used in the 6.1 release
but now the kernel won't detect my burner.

Does anyone know if you have to use different settings for the 2.2.10
kernel
to obtain scsi emulation support.

Oh, you've noticed? So did I. In the kernel sources,
drivers/scsi/aha1542.c, change the default addresses from 0x330-0x334 to
0x230-0x234 and recompile.

End of problem. I do it to each new release of the kernel since
2.0.34.

I have no idea why the defaults were so set by Donald Becker, but it
seems that 0x330 is a dead address, even when it is not otherwise in
use, on at least half the systems. Can anyone explain this?

edit lilo.conf to add the new kernel, but do not replace the old

Give the new kernel an odd name so that you can when it says lilo boot:
give it the name of the new file to see if it will boot. Once it boots,
then you could make it the default image in lilo.conf.

Don't forget to rerun 'lilo -v' anytime you make a change to lilo.conf.
And I probably left something out, my apologies in advance.

There are three paths you can take. One is to take a look at the fixes on
the dell inspiron linux page but pay attention to what your bios is before
starting, the second is to do vesa frame buffer support which should be
built into redhat 6, and the last is to do what I have done. I bought the
Xi Accelerated Laptop graphics drivers. Works great here.

Take care. To find the linux and inspiron pages ask at a search site like
google.

Hi there,

is anybody actually using the Matrox G400 MAX card with 360 MHz
RAMDAC and 32 MB VRAM successfully under Linux?

I am aware, that Xfree86 3.3.4 is listing the G400 as "supported"
and have seen several posts saying, the G400 is working. But, I have
also seen the G200 being listed by Xfree as "now fully supported",
when in reality only the 8 MB VRAM version worked, but NOT the 16 MB
version of the same G200 card!

Because of that I'd very much appreciate anybody telling me first
hand, that this _specific_ model, the G400 MAX (360 MHz), is
actually working in X.
(I understand, certain features, such as Dualhead etc., are not yet
supported but will be hopefully soon. I am interested wether at
least the basic X Windows stuff will work with this card.)

Thanx already for your help!

Nope. It should work just fine as long as your serial ports are working
(most likely). You can always use minicom to test it by sending it AT
commands and such. man minicom for more info on this program.

I use a USRobotics External 33.6 modem works great!

Jimmy, I believe that I would check with your HD Controller board
manufacturer for Linux recommendations. I have a 486DX33 system (16MB
RAM) running RedHat5.2 . I have a Promise EIDEMAX HD controller, with
a 10.1GB IBM HD as master on primary IDE port (on the MB) and a 2.1GB
WD HD (master)on the secondary IDE port (on the EIDEMAX card). My
CDROM is on the secondary port as slave. Each system is a bit
different, so patience is a virtue :-) . (It took me a long time to
get the CDROM working in LINUX. It would not work as it did in DOS
where it was connected to the Sound Blaster soundboard (quaternary IDE
port ..slave), nor would it work as the primary port slave! Its
working now...but I have other problems :-) in an seemingly unending
LINUX challenge!

Good Luck, Richard

Interesting idea, as the Original Sporster Winmodems from USR were
ISA, and many are still being sold. Hsp modems and RPI modems would
also qualify as ISA winmodems.

I use a couple of these. As far as I know they're not PnP cards so isapnp
isn't going to find them.

I've always had to compile the aha152x driver into the kernel to get them
seen, and to add

append="aha152x=0x340,11,7"

into my lilo.conf stanza. I use mine for an older Wangtek SCSI QIC tape
device and it works well once the aha driver is set up right.
