I have just got a Upsonic UPS 600VA which will have Linux 'drivers'
in about 3-4 weeks.

UPS works fine.

A simple way of using any UPS with linux is to check (Scan) the
status pin of the UPS. It would either be high or low in back-up
mode. It should then be simple to include a timer that will
say shutdown if status is back-up for more than, say 5 minutes.

Havent tried yet just got the UPS...

A sig-11 says there is a hardware problem, in most cases it is the
memory which doesn't stand the 100 MHz bus-frequency or
it's caused by overclocked systems/cpu's.

Yep, "approved by the manufacturer itself", what are you awaiting ? :)

Have you compiled your kernel with CONFIG_PCI_QUIRKS=y ??

I was in it's directiry when I tried to run it.

Is this a problem with being logged on as root ?
I have found other executables which I cant run and I get the same
command not found response.

and if I make a script, even though it starts with

#! /bin/bash

and has the executable permissions set, I can only get it to run by
typing

/bin/bash myscript

all the stuff like gzip, tar, startx, make etc run fine.

I should maybe now try creating myself a user account, it's about
time.

Help please

Hi,

Does anyone have some opinions about these monitors?
Are they good monitors? What in particular do you like
or dislike? Is one significantly better than the other?

Thanks,

NIC's are not generally assigned this irq.

Check cat /proc/interrupts

You may need to try another irq

"3.3 The ether= thing didn't do anything for me. Why?

As described above, the ether= command only works for drivers that are
compiled into the kernel. Now most distributions
use the drivers in a modular form, and so the ether= command is rarely used
anymore. (Some older documentation has yet
to be updated to reflect this change.) If you want to apply options for a
modular ethernet driver you must make changes to the
/etc/conf.modules file. "

If you want to switch to a text console, press Alt-Ctrl-F1 (...-F7 to
get back).

If you want to shutdown the X server (I guess you want this), first
switch to the text console and log in as root, then enter "init 2".
(Depending on your distribution, you might need to use a different
number.)

You should run Autodetect option from BIOS.
Are you check cable orientation ? Red mark on cable edge?

While the PII & PIII are on everyone's tounge, let me make mention of
AMD's big gun the Athalon, you can get it in speeds begining at 500 and
getting as high as 650Mhz. And almost no overclocking is required
because they are on a 200Mhz bus. (I'm also planning to get one and it
runs all the above apps as well)

The Athalon will do SMP also. You can checkout AMD's website for
confirmation or additional information (I hate sounding like a sales
person for, but I like AMD). Also they have recommendations on putting
together a system based on these processors (Again I recommend Gigabytes
GA-71X motherboard, almost all my systems are based on there boards).

www.xfree86.org has a list of supported cards. You should also check

Another is if you allow your logs to get REALLY big, they'll fill up the
/var partition. If that happens and you've only got two (swap and /)
then you'll get all sorts of strange errors and your system may not
even work.

Another is fsck. If you umount a partition, you can fsck (check it for
errors) while your system is up. Then just remount the partition and be
on your way.

Another is backups. You might just want to back up a certain partition
and put a new disk on as (for instance) /usr. After that, you'll have
to put your /usr into your /etc/fstab so it gets mounted every time you
boot.

Generally, for a home system, I suggest four partitions. swap, /,
/home, and /var. When you go to upgrade, your /home can remain how it is
with all your settings untouched. /var cannot fill up the / directory
with log files and you have swap space.

When he says "it's not in your path'" he means the PATH environment variable.

When Linux (or any Unix) looks for commands to execute it will only look
in directories specified in PATH unless you use an absolute address for
the program. Example of absolute addresses are /usr/bin/dd ../bin/dd ./dd
(the latter two are relative paths and depends on which directory you are
in whey you execute the command). 'dd' (or any program name) alone, without
any slashes in some combination in front of it, is not.

It is possible to have '.' as part of you PATH variable, if so then your
command 'setiathome' would have worked without the ./ if you had cd'ed into
the directory first. However, this is extremely risky. Consider:
Evil bastard does
cd /tmp
echo "rm -rf *" > ls
chmod a+rx ls
exit

Then you decide to look around in an idle moment and you do something like
cd /etc
ls
cd /tmp
ls
Boom.

I have a UMAX Astra 1220S scsi scanner and after trying
every possible practical configuration I cannot get it to
work on my Linux 2.2.12 system with an Adaptec AHA-1542CP
scsi controller.

When the card is set in non-plug-&-play mode it will always
time out on trying to do anything at all with the scsi bus.
When the card is in plug-and-play mode it doesn't experience
hangs or timeouts but just doesn't see the scanner, which is
the only device connected to the controller. "No attached
devices".

As a separate issue - since I can't get the scanner working
on the Adaptec controller - I've tried to get the UMAX-supplied
DTC-3181 scsi controller to work in plug-&-play mode, which I'd
read in a usenet post would allow the driver to use an interrupt
with the card. Using isapnp I've been able to configure the
DTC-3181 in plug-&-play mode, and on loading the g_NCR5380
scsi module it states that the interrupt is being used. However
scanning is no faster (about half the speed of Windows 98)
and the count for the interrupt in a 'cat /proc/interrupts'
is zero, so it looks like the g_NCR5380 driver isn't using
the interrupt after all (even though it said it was!).

If anyone has ANY information or advice on using a UMAX 1220S
scanner with an Adaptec AHA-1542CP I'd be extremely grateful to
hear about it, since I'm otherwise going to have to give up on
getting the scanner to work with it. If you're using this
combination I'd love to hear about the card's configuration.
Or if anyone has succeeded in getting satisfactory performance from
the UMAX scsi card under Linux, I'd love to hear about that as well!

Thanks,

Brad Rosser

Yes, and Yes

I'm using an old Superdisk as a 120 meg removeable hard drive. Noisey,
slow, and (knock on wood, my head will do in a pinch..) so far, rock
solid dependable. You might have to turn on the atapi floppy stuffs and
recompile to use the floppy as a floppy though.

Cheers, Gene

The aha1520 driver works just fine with it.

Sorry but 99% of PCI modems are win modems. Best bet, since the manufactures
hide the winmodem fact (which should be illegal), is get an external modem.
Before buying any modem, you need to check out
http://www.o2.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html
this is a very extensive list of modems and type.
