This may sound silly, but....

Have you connected the CD player to the soundcard?
(That's how the sound is transferred from the CDROM drive... The only
software involved in the process is telling the drive to play, change
tracks, pause, etc...

I found this old double speed CD drive lying around, and want to make
it work (to sit in an old 5x86-133 faxserver & xterminal, for
installing software upgrades etc.) ...

I think it's an IDE drive, judging by the 40-way connector on the
back, but I'd like to know what the DIP switches are for. I also
wonder what the four pin connector between them and the audio output
is for!

Incidentally, it came in an external casing, being called the
CDR-6700S, which includes a set of DIP switches to select drive number
(1 to 5) and "DREQ", on or off. This made me think it is a SCSI
drive. Or is it really an ATAPI (i.e. SCSI commands over an IDE bus,
roughly) internal drive, with appropriate (37-pin) connections to make
it look like a SCSI drive from outside the External casing?

I hope somebody has one of these drives, or at least a manual for one,
since there's no information on the Hitachi site; the drive os too old
for them it seems (dated 1993 on the case) ... ideally I'd like to
plug it into the IDE bus and lo, it works. If it's a lot more
complicated than that I'll probably junk it and buy a new one - it's
just not worth the time! Actually that's probably not true. I'll spend
ages figuring out how to get it working, succeed, and the drive will
then go up in smoke or something.

TIA,

I found in a local store some refurbished Epson 440's on sale. I am
wondering if there exist
Linux drivers for it.

I found the following website which lists the 640 which is a similar
printer.

http://jgo.local.net/HOWTO/Printing-HOWTO-4.html#ss4.1

However the same document mentions that the 740 doesn't work perfectly
so that makes me nervous about the 440. If anyone knows about this, I
would appreciate hearing about it.

Thanks,

get io invalid parameter. Same with insmod or modprobe.

Vipul
you are not alone :)

I yelled at the screen for 14 days before a programmer buddy came over
and worked 3 hours with me until we solved the mystery of the slackware
4 and the mouse.

I have the exact same set up as you
slack 4
asus p2b
ms intellimouse

I have installed slack 10 times and get this porblem EVERY time.
Here is what i do each time to repair it

1. type
ps ax | grep gpm

if anything is running, kill it
so if it says
112 bla bla bla
134 bla bla bla
type...
kill 112
kill 134

2. go into rc.local
cd /etc/rc.d
vi rc.local
if you don't like vi, use joe or vim or whatever

make the line say
gpm -R -m /dev/mouse -t ps2

save it

3. go to
cd /etc
vi XF86config

Section "Pointer"
        Protocol "MouseSystems"
        Device "/dev/gpmdata"

save
----
now I can't remember if that works yet or not.
wave your mouse around on the screen before you startx and see if you
see the white square wiggle around. If you do, try a startx, if you
don't, try some of these added tricks

4. optional trick
try into the console
gpm -R -m /dev/psaux -t ps2

hit return (it is the same thing in that other file but you are typing
it as a command)
try wigling the mouse now...see a white square wiggle...try startx

5. optional junk
if it is still not working type
ln -s /dev/psaux /dev/mouse

then type
/usr/sbin/gpm -t ps2

now try wiggling the mouse

I hope the first 3 solve your problem.
If not, keep kill off the gpm and trying to type in stuff. I have no
idea what causes this...maybe it is a asus and slack thing, or an
intellimouse thing...but I found it incredibly frustrating.

--
and once you are in X windows, not sure if you already knew or now
CTRL ALT +
hit that to alter your resolution

CTRL ALT BACKSPACE
hit that to get out of xwindows

good luck
let me know if it works

Andy

Hi,

I own a Tyan 1563Dual Tomcat III motherboard and would like to buy some
memory for it.
I heard rumors on Linux SMP web site that Tyan is very picky regarding
memory, but I am
not sure what they (people who wrote the Linux SMP FAQ) really meant?
However, generally speaking, should I go for a generic brand or a brand
name like Crucial/
Kingsto/PNJ/Viking which cost 3X more than the generic brand?

Subject: MODEM SCHMODEM. Help!!
Date: 13 Sep 1999 01:13:41 GMT

I am a newbie and am getting a bit frustrated trying to get my modem to work.
If anyone has any words of advice, they would be greatly appreciated.

First off, it's not a winmodem. I initially tried the pnpdump, isapnp route
and followed the instructions very carefully. My card was detected, I used
setserial, edited the boot.local file. All good. Then, I tried minicom...no
luck. Modem not detected.

So, I decided to skip the pnp and jumper the thing myself. After consulting
the BIOS, I set the IRQ to 11, which is what was recommended. I then used
setserial as follows:

setserial /dev/ttyS2 port 0x2e8 irq 11 autoconfig

Still no luck. Minicom gave me the same message.

Additionally, the last message prior to the OS boot is

Conflict in IO ports 3f8

This message was not there before I changed the jumper settings on the modem.
And, it seems a bit odd since I can't recall setting anything to that address.

I'm sure I am leaving out some important infomation, and I know there are some
major gaps in my understanding. One specific question I have is: what is the
connection between the IO port, the IRQ, and the tty? Are these set in stone
somewhere, or can you program the system yourself? Does anyone have any idea
what I am doing wrong? I have spent several hours researching this online, and
I just can't figure it out.

Thank you so much for any advice.

Melinda
