It looks to me like the correct syntax is:

  options aha1542 aha1542=0x340

I know this looks redundent, but it is consistent with the syntax for an
Adaptec aha152x, which is what I use.

Why don't you enter the following from the command line (as root) and see
what happens:

  /sbin/modprobe aha1542 aha1542=0x340

If it doesn't work, perhaps you will get a meaningful error message.

Hope this helps. Good Luck!

Any chance to get ANY version of linux (or similar OS, like minix) running
on this monster. A friend gave it to me, because he had no use for it. I'd
hate to see it go to waste, sitting there in the corner. Any suggestions?
(Besides the usual anti-Mac garbage) Are there any ports in the works, or
is this beast too old to even deserve recognition?

Thanks,

I'm looking for a better way to control my sony cdp-s300. The slinke
by nirvis (http://www.nirvis.com/slink-e.htm) seems like just the ticket.

I know there are nice jukebox programs for this hardware and the
windows universe, but karma won't let me take that approach.

What is available on the linux side for this sort of thing?

Thanks!

I tried the Slackware 7 bootdisk "megaraid.s" on a similar system. It
booted without a problem. So I think just compile a kernel with
"AMI Megaraid" enabled and you will be up.

It is a common misconception that a larger cache will result in an improved
performance. Actually, it's all Intel's marketing. Your Xeon will only be
marginally faster than a Celeron-400. I have run some tests on a dual Xeon at
work and they were very disappointing. A uniprocessor at twice the frequency is
always better than dual, therefore get an Athlon, if you can afford it, or a
dual Celeron (possibly overclocked) if you can't.

May have to go with AWE64 -- a DELL system I had quoted includes it.
Haven't heard of Aureal before. I'll do some checking. Tried Indelible
Blue but the only Linux they load is RedHat (I want SuSE for my new system
and RH for my old). Also they don't have Athlon yet. The last two points
are debatable and I've e-mailed their sales team. Should get an answer

that might work? I've had no luck so far and would just love
to get a working install. I've seen docs about getting ACER
50x drives to work. Would that driver work for a 20x? The
model # is ACER 620A.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'd hate to have to
drop $ just to but a supported drive, but will if necessary.

Try 'hdb=cdrom' at the boot prompt. Change 'b' to whatever your drive
designation is. You can use this at the install boot prompt too. I have
a very similar Acer, and had to start doing this after upgrading the MB.
Have no idea why, but worked fine with older board.

If this works you can put an 'append' statement in the global section of
lilo.conf.

Hi All,

I recently got a USB Logitech mouse, and had wanted to know if it
was posiible to use it under LINUX, specifically RedHat V6.0.... I was
hoping to use it as a USB device, rather than setting up the mouse as a
ps/2 mouse... I was under the impression that if a mouse could be used as
USB, or ps/2, one should go for USB (atleast for Win9x) so I was wondering
if I could get the mouse to work under Linux/Xfree86 using the USB
interface... anyone know if this is possible, and if so how? Thanks in
advance.

Well, I've been trying to install Linux for nearly a month now with no
success as my system as a Promise Ultra66 controller. I am not worried
about how fast the drive will run - I simply would like the installer to see
my drives. I have tried Debian (slink and potato), Slackware 7, and Redhat
6.0 and 6.1 - none of which will recognize my drive. I have tried the
following syntax at the boot prompt:

boot: linux ide2=0xA800,0xA400 ide3=0xA000,0x9800

This yields the following message(s) from the kernel (all distributions):

ide_setup: ide2=0xA800,0xA400 -- BAD OPTION
ide_setup: ide3=0xA000,0x9800 -- BAD OPTION

I'm about ready to toss the towel in on Linux. Any advice would be greatly
appreciated.

Thanks,

J

I found a AMP (yes, AMP...) PCMCIA SCSI card. I looked
at their www site but found no mention of it... or any other
PCMCIA cards.

Has anyone used this? What kernel, driver, etc?

Subject: cd-writer problem (not just IDE-SCSI emul.)
Date: Mon, 28 Feb 2000 00:58:37 -0500

I've successfully recompiled my kernel to recognize my Mitsumi ATAPI CD-writer as a
SCSI device. However, I've been unable to write CD's using either cdrecord or
cdrdao. I can simulate writes with cdrdao of wav files on my hard drive at speed 1,
but I get these messages while it's happening:

Wrote 1 of 16 MB. Buffer (100%).
scsi: aborting command due to timeout pid 1078, scsi0, channel 0, lun 0 Test Unit
Ready 00 00 00 00 00
SCSI host 0 abort (pid 1078) timed out - resetting
SCSI bus is being reset for host 0 channel 0
[these three messages repeat for around a minute, filling the screen]
hdb: irq timeout: status=0xd0 {Busy}
hdb: ATAPI reset complete
hdb: irq timeout: status=0xd0 {Busy}
Wrote 2 of 16 MB. Buffer (100%)
[this line then changes to "Wrote 3 of..." until all 16 MB have been written]
Flushing cache...
[the same three scsi messages, with "pid 2990" instead, repeat for a long time]
[the hdb messages come up, this time 5 of them]

When I write at speed 4, the first messages are the same (with a different pid), but
after the first set of hdb messages, it gives

ERROR: SCSI command failed:
ERROR: additional sense code 0x24
ERROR: additional sense code qualifier: 0x0
ERROR: Write data failed.
ERROR: Slave: write of audio data failed.

Wrote 2850 blocks. Minimal buffer fill 0%.
Flushing cache...
ERROR: Writing failed - buffer under run?
ERROR: Simulation failed.

Any help with this, either with things I can try, or other forums to ask, would be
greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Janak

(I can give the cdrecord messages, but they're very similar to these.)

None of what you have done is the answer. The kernel that comes with RedHat6.0
(2.2.5-15) does not have support for the Ultra66. Go to:
http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/mini/Ultra-DMA-5.html and follow the instructions
for creating a new installation floppy with Ultra66 support and then installing
the patch in the kernel. It worked fine for me.

Good luck

Bob
