Which motherboard? Which keyboard? Any adapters in there? Have you
tried another keyboard?
My guess is marginal hardware, most likely on the motherboard, but
easier to fix by swapping keyboards instead of motherboards. I had
a similar problem with an Abit BX6 and an NMB RT-101+ AT keyboard
with a PS/2 adapter. Got a proper IBM PS/2 keyboard, and the problem
went away. (Plus it's got a much nicer feel.)
You can also try fiddling with BIOS settings, like 8- and 16-bit
IO timings. I've seen that fix a twitchy keyboard in Windows,
but it didn't help when I was seeing spurious keystrokes in Linux.

At my college, the public labs didn't have these pads at all. Students
were expected to buy their own optical pads. (Fortunately, I worked in
a professor's private lab, so I didn't have this problem.)
This plan worked until Sun changed their mouse design, breaking the
existing pads. (The older mice require a blue/black grid, while the
newer ones use an all-black grid. Mice for one pad don't work on the
other.)

Hi-
I'm using winlinux 2000, and I can't get my HP Laserjet 1100 to print. I
get the lpr error message 'unable to find official name for local machine'
or something like that (I get a Spool Command error under WordPerfect).
I've been doing some reading and have found out that although the printer
is 100% compatible, there is a parport problem that needs to be corrected.
Someone has already posted here a solution for this parport problem (see
My Printer Is Not Working, reply 6). However, part of the solution
involves adding the following to the lilo.conf file:
append = "parport=0x378,7"
Apparently, there is no such file in winlinux 2000 (which boots from
Windows). What should I do? Create a LILO? Is there anywhere else that
this line can be added?
Also, the last line of the posted solution reads:
dmesg:
======
parport0: PC-style at 0x378 (0x778), irq 7 [SPP,ECP,ECPPS2]
What does this mean? Thanks for your help.

Hi,
I'm running Red Hat Linux 6.1 and have a problem with my sound card.
It is a "Sound Blaster PCI 128", but sndconfig detects this as a
"Ensoniq AudioPCI" card (es1370.o)...
I have detected no errors in the logs. But.... the volume is EXTREMELY
low! I can only hear actual sound, if I direct the sound through
line-out into my stereo and turn up it up to a VERY(!) high level. This
is, when the volume is at its maximum in "xmixer" etc.
So... I was wondering, do I need a specific driver for my SB-card (where
can I find it?)
Or... does the ensoniq-driver work properly, if I can fix the
volume-problem? In that case, how can I fix it??
Thanks,
Jakob Sandholm

I hardwired an Ice-A3 mouse I had to permanently be in MouseSystems
mode.
There's a howto (Mouse-howto??) that has links to instructions on how to
do this on certain dual-mode mouse chips.

I am using the same card... I used to have some trouble with it. You can
try this...
Use a mixer program in KDE.. Don't use the one in Main menu (Multimedia)..
That program always gives me more trouble... You can try to adjust the
volume by running (KDE) --> (multimedia) --> (mixer)..
Good luck
Alex.

The es1370.o is the correct module for this board. The PCI128 uses the
Ensoniq 1370 chipset.
Did you try plugging your speakers into the amplified output? Are your
speakers turned on, battery good, plugged in?

I am running Corel's version. I severely dislike anything
from Redmond, Wa. Are any of the other versions of Linux
any better than Corel's? The type face is restricted, the
overall look bland (at best), the documentation stinks and
the overall "user friendliness" is severely "challenged."
I do not like Windows, as I said, but it makes what I have
seen in the Linux world look good. From the write up I have
read and the comments I have seen posted on the user's
groups, this is not what I would expect. What am I missing?
Also, does anyone know if a US Robotics Sportster modem,
model 0481, is a winmodem or not? Another thing I would
like to do is be able to run a check on my uart in Linux,
which would answer the question I just asked, but haven't
found one. Is there one? In addition does one need the
"Gift of Interpretation" to read the docs that go with it?
Thanks

If e.g. your Scanner has SCSI-ID 4 than you can add it with
echo "scsi add-single-device 0 0 4 0" > /proc/scsi/scsi

ALL (100%) of the energy that goes into a computer goes out as HEAT.
This equation tells us all we need to know:
Power (watts) = Voltage (volts) x Current (amps)
Generally, US wall outlet voltage is 115 VAC. Using an ammeter, measure
the current entering the PC. While this can be done using an in-line
ammeter, for safety I recommend using a clamp-on ammeter. The current on
the "hot" side of the line should be measured. Be sure the ammeter is
set to display the "RMS" or "AC" value. If you only have a peak-reading
ammeter, then multiply the peak value by .707 to get the RMS value (valid
only for sine waves, which is what we have here).
My PC pulls just under 2A of current (1.89A), which means I'm dissipating
about 200 watts. Since I have a Cyrix processor and couple of older SCSI
disk drives you can fry eggs on, my power consumption may not be
typical. I expect most other systems would consume something closer to
100 watts.
Some top-end power supplies contain monitoring circuitry that eliminates
the need for an external ammeter, and allows the computer to monitor its
own power consumption. This feature is often needed for high-reliability
systems, so that pending failures can be handled gracefully.
Unfortunately, there is no standard interface for such monitoring, though
the closest thing to it is the UPS monitoring interface. And there are
some power supplies that also contain full (but small) UPS capability.
But they co$t.
Of course, if you have APM or ACPI enabled, the power consumption will
not be constant, and you may need to disable power management to
determine your system's maximum sustained power consumption.
