I have an EFA company's  E5TZ-AT "Pegasus I" motherboard that I recintly
obtained. I've tried every kernel config combo out there to make Linux boot
on it. The Linux kernel starts booting, and either: (1) reboots the
machine, or (2) locks up after PCI related probes (bus, ide, io ports) ?!?!?
(no registar dump either!)

I've compiled my kernel a gizillion times with no avail. I'm running
Redhat 6.0(hedwig), with a 2.2.5 kernel version. The factory (rescue) kernel
images boot fine. but my compiled version's don't.

I noticed my motherboard was mention in the Hardware.howto, where it
described my exact problem. It suggested D/L the latest BIOS version (Award
1.03). I did, and installed it, and my kernels still won't boot.

If anyone out there has had some experience, or knowledge of somebody, or a
URL explaining this please reply or email me ([EMAIL PROTECTED])

I need help 'cuas:

(1) I've never seen a linux kernel just not work, and not even give a
registar dump
(2) I HATE running Winblow '98!

Melissa,

This is fairly painless if you use Partition Magic (www.powerquest.com) for
modifying your disk partitions and System Commander (www.v-com.com) to
choose your operating system when you boot up.

There is also a product VMWare (www.vmware.com) which lets you switch
between operating systems without rebooting. I've read good things about it
but never used it.

Regards,
Philip Payne

Actually, the latest version of Partition Magic includes a fair amount of
the functionality of System Commander, and vice-versa, so you can probably
get away with just one or the other. I've always used both, though.

Hi Tom,

    I also struggled for some time to get my TDK CDRW
running under Linux. For what it's worth, here are the
relevant entries in my /usr/src/linux.config file:

  CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDESCSI=y
  .
  .
  CONFIG_SCSI=y
  CONFIG_BLK_DEV_SD=y
  # CONFIG_CHR_DEV_ST is not set
  CONFIG_BLK_DEV_SR=y
  CONFIG_BLK_DEV_SR_VENDOR=y
  CONFIG_CHR_DEV_SG=y

    You'll know you've succeeded with the kernel setup when
you get the following sort of output during boot-up:

  hda: WDC WD136AA, ATA DISK drive
  hdc: TDK CDRW8432, ATAPI CDROM drive
  .
  .
  scsi0 : SCSI host adapter emulation for IDE ATAPI devices
  scsi : 1 host.
    Vendor: TDK Model: CDRW8432 Rev: 1.05
    Type:   CD-ROM                             ANSI SCSI revision:
  Detected scsi CD-ROM sr0 at scsi0, channel 0, id 0, lun 0
  scsi : detected 1 SCSI cdrom total.
  sr0: scsi3-mmc drive: 32x/32x writer cd/rw xa/form2 cdda tray
  Uniform CDROM driver Revision: 2.54

    I'm running RedHat 6.0 (kernel 2.2.5-15). I hope this helps.

                               -- Cheers,

You need to specify the file system type with

mount -t <fs> /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy

where <fs> is msdos, vfat, ext2, minix or what you have on the disk!!!

OK for the first time, but second time: RTFM! (Read the f***ing manual!)
i.e. "man mount"

I'm not picking; just trying to understand:
In the French case would the separator after " %f\r" really be a period?
Or would it be a comma? My understanding is that for numbers the European
convention is 1.000,00 whereas the Anglo-Saxon convention is 1,000.00.
But the grammatical usage of commas and periods are the same: we both use
commas to separate phrases and periods to end sentences. The above
example looks more like a semantical separation rather than a numerical
one.

Take care,
Duane

Heard nothing bad about Plextor.
I'm using a Yamaha 4416 which works fine under Linux, but has some

So I think Yamaha is a good choice, too.

Here are a couple of possible sources:

http://www.intellesale.com/
http://www.outletzoo.com/zoos/default.asp

You might also check some of the bigger computer manufacturers (Dell, IBM,
Compaq, Gateway, etc.). Some of these offer refurbished products. They're
probably mostly a bit more expensive than the ~$100 you're looking to
spend, but it's worth some digging on their web sites to find out for
sure, I think.

That's what I thought. And that's why I asked. Someone responded that if

I don't have an experience with servers and backplane hardwares, but
what I can help you is you'd better bug DELL more strongly. In my
opinion it's DELL's responsibility if they decide to load Linux with the
possibly unsupported hardware. Redhat is a mere packager so that they
have limited knowledge of all available hardware configuration. Linux is
still struggling with Ultra 66 EIDE... It's my two penny thought.
Hope somebody with more experience with your hardware can answer better.

Cheers.

The 3c59x driver doesn't work for you? RTM, the 3c59x driver is supposed
to work with the series 590 and 900 cards. Try "modprobe 3c59x" to load
driver--the stock RH install should include it as a module. If you don't
see any horrible error messages, it probably worked, and you can ifconfig
and route and try to ping something. HTH,

If you knew the first error message wasn't a problem, why'd you post it
and not the second error message?

Anyway, what happens when you try this?:
# mount -t iso9660 /dev/scd0 -o ro /mnt/cdrom

That should give a more illuminating error message and rule out
permission problems or /etc/fstab as a source of problems. The line in
your /etc/fstab should be like so:
/dev/scd0   /mnt/cdrom   iso9660   noauto,user,ro   0   0

Or try /dev/sr0 instead of /dev/scd0 ? They're supposed to point to the
same place, but sometimes one works and the other doesn't.

Also, you should have a look at /var/log/dmesg and make sure that your
CD-RW is getting recognized as an IDE-SCSI device. If you have IDE CD-ROM
support compiled, you may have to pass the "hdX=ide-scsi" option to the
kernel at boot time so the IDE driver doesn't grab the CD and refuse to
let go.

>And this is on a CD that already has data on it. I wasn't trying to burn to

OK. I must've misparsed the previous message then....

Nah. There's a much easier way to do it. There should be a line in
/etc/fstab that looks kind of like so:
/dev/fd0   /mnt/floppy   auto   noauto,user  0  0
If it doesn't match that line exactly, change it so that it does.

After that, you can mount a DOS, ext2, minix, or what-have-you floppy by
merely entering "mount /mnt/floppy" or "mount /dev/fd0" as any user.
Caution: If you enter "mount /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy", then you will get
error messages.

Subject: Driver for Video Capture Card using Bt878
Date: Tue, 29 Feb 2000 02:30:16 GMT

I am working on a video capturing system based on Rockwell's Bt878 -
Single-chip video and audio capture for the PCI bus. Is there any Linux
driver written for this chip? Or how can I communicate with the PCI chip
within Linux application (any samples out there)? Also how to setup a DMA
transfer, in particular, how to get a physical memory address for the DMA
contrller to work on?
Any pointer or suggestion will be appreciated.
Thanks and best regards
