You don't need PM to create the initial system, but it is extremely helpful if
you want to resize disk partitions without doing a dump/load. My PM has more
than paid for itself for that one feature.

PM is worthwhile when you want to change the sizes of existing partitions.
This can be for a variety of reasons, such as taking better advantage of
partitioning as a means of providing greater security for parts of a
drive; or when you want to add another version or distribution of Linux
to an existing system.
My dim recollection is that Ted Ts'o did the ext2 portion of PM, and that
this was going to be open-sourced in some form after a year or thereabouts
of exclusive use by PM. Anyone heard anything about this?

Subject: adding a scsi controller
Date: Fri, 3 Mar 2000 13:39:07 -0500
I have a system running RH6.1. It is booting from an IDE drive. I added a PCI
based 53C810 SCSI controller card to the system. When I rebooted, kudzu
detected the controller and asked if I want to configure the device. I
responded yes. However when the system came up, it did not recognize the
controller. I checked and found that an entry had been added to
/etc/conf.modules for the controller:
alias scsi_hostadapter ncr53c8xx
There was also an entry in /etc/sysconfig/hwconf for the device:
-
class: SCSI
bus: PCI
detached: 0
driver: ncr53c8xx
desc: "Symbios|53c810"
vendorId: 1000
deviceId: 0001
-
However it was not seen at boot. The only hint of an error I saw was in
/var/log/messages:
kernel: scsi : 0 hosts.
kernel: scsi : detected total.
I thought maybe it isn't loaded since there isn't a target drive. I installed a
drive, but the results were the same.
If I manually do an insmod ncr53c8xx however, the controller is recognized and
I can use the attached drive.
So the question is, why isn't the module loaded automatically at boot time?
What do I need to change to make
it do so?
TIA,
Ron S.

Subject: optical drives and optical media
Date: Fri, 03 Mar 2000 18:38:48 +0000
Could someone out there enlighten me (a bit) on the
pros/cons of the available optical media/drives? I am not
interested in capacities, prices, etc (that I can surely
find out), but rather on their logical structure, on the
filesystems supported, and on their easy of use.
What I mean is the following: right now, the following
main types are available: CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-RAM (and DVD+RW),
and MO.
On one extreme, we have the CD-R and its write-once media.
CD recording is a bit tricky, because a CD-R disk cannot be
written more than once, and also (probably) because it is
conceptually different from a hard drive: the hard disk has
cylinders, sectors,... while the CD-R has a single spiral
track. It seems one cannot just copy files to a CD-R (even
a multisession one); rather, one has to generate some "image"
in the first place.
Magneto-optical disks seem to be very flexible (their
logical structure is like those of hard-disks, and they
are rewritable) and work fine with Unix systems -- they
can be mounted just like hard drives. So (?) they can be
used with various powerfull filesystems.
This seem to be the other extreme (the good one).
Now, what happens with CD-RW and DVD-RAM ?
Also, if you can spot any (conceptual) errors in my
message, please do let me know!
Thank you (a lot!). And please send me a copy of any
meassage you post on the newsgroup.

Probably a monochrome-graphics / parallel card.
I had an "MGP" card once with that combination.
The 89092 number could be a date code, like
day 92 of 1989, which would be about the right
vintage for such a card. Look at some of the other
chips for date codes of form yyww, eg 8932 would
be week 32 of 1989. Also look for jumpers to set
the parallel port number to 1, 2, 3 and its irq to 5
or 7, and an enable/disable jumper.
It's possible to use an MGP card in a dual-monitor
setup - if you found an old monochrome monitor -
but more likely only the printer port is useful.

I don't recognize any of the numbers so this is just a guess but the
connectors would make me think an I/O card with a 9 pin rs232 and either a
25 pin rs232 pr 25 pin parallel port, depending on the gender of the
connector. Your computer wouldn't be able to see it if it was using the
same parameters as the serial and/or parallel ports you already have.

You need a ppa driver for these "windows only printers". Look at

I had the same problem which I solved by numerous changes to the kernel.
Unfortunately I tried so many things that I can't remember exactly what
got it working in the end. Just keep on trying different block device
settings and I think SCSI settings too until it works.

Looks like I'm in the minority here, but I had problems with
an early K-2 233 (I think that's the model, it was one of the first
233's). There were some timing problems that caused random
crashes, and we could NEVER do a complete kernel compile.
This was back in the bad old days of kernel 2.0, and RedHat 5.1
It was a packaged system put together by Polywell, I believe
it has a Microstar motherboard. And yes, there was plenty of
cooling.

It uses the Intel 820 chipset, which is rather new. I couldn't find
any information about Linux/Intel 820 compatibility, and the OptiPlex GX300
is suspiciously absent from RedHat's list of Dell machines certified
for Linux.

Just curious, how do you figure US as Imperial when we've never elected an
emperor? ;-)
But seriously, I agree. I'm a big fan of the metric system as sole use
would make my life alot easier. For instance, in the metric system you
calculate force due to gravity as mass (kg) * acceleration (m/s^2) equals
force (N). Simple. In American Engineering Units it's mass (lbm) *
acceleration (ft/sec^2) / gravitational constant (32.174
(lbm*ft)/(lbf*sec^2)) equals force (lbf). I've had to memorize the value
32.174 and figure out the units basis the equation F = m * g / gc. What a
pain!

Subject: Help with my strange printer problem!!
Date: Fri, 03 Mar 2000 20:30:28 GMT
Hi,
I have a Epson Stylus 900 printer which I tried to hook up with Redhat
6.1. I did modify the /etc/conf.modules file and included the text:
alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc
Now as there is no driver at present for Epson Stylus 900, I first tried
the Epson 800 ECP II (something like that) and I was able to print the
B & W tests page (both plain text and postscript). I then tried just
the Epson Stylus Color option and I got a color printout of the ps test
page (color not that good though!). I became ambitious and increased the
resolution to 720x720 and then when I tried to print the ps test page it
started printing junk. I switched off the monitor, removed all the jobs
by typing lprm * from the printer queue and change my printer configuraion
to the previous B & W one. Now it don't print any damn thing!! When I
try to print the test page - I get the message that `Your job is queued '
but I don't see any entries with the lpq command. My printer works just
fine with Windows but now not with Redhat 6.1. I tried to add the printer
again from the scratch by removing the /var/spool/lpd/lp directory, and
clearing up the /etc/printcap file. The strange part is that at one point
I unplugged my printer from my machine and then tried to add a printer -
but it found the printer port!! How the hell that can be!!! My guess is
somewhere the printer got registered or may be there is something else
which I don't know. Any help from anyone?
Thanks in advance.

Or more informatively, after the line 'bogomips :265.42,' the second
processor's details will begin with the line 'processor : 1' and so on
until all the processors are accounted for; providing the OS is set up for
SMP;?)

Subject: HELP: adaptec 2940u2, gateway E5200, IBM LVD disks - aborting command due to
timeout!
Date: 3 Mar 2000 13:52:57 -0700
So, I get a new gateway E 5200 machine to put linux on, with
an adaptec 2940U2 scsi card and 2 IBM LVD disks.
NT works 'ok' on it (for some value of 'ok' ;-).
However, when I boot RedHat 6.1 CD on it all I get is:
<4>scsi: 1 host.
<4>scsi : aborting command due to timeout : pid 0, scsi0, channel 0, id 0, lun 0 Test
Unit Ready 00 00 00 00 00
<4>SCSI host 0 abort (pid 0) timed out - resetting
<4>SCSI bus is being reset for host 0 channel 0.
<4>SCSI host 0 channel 0 reset (pid 0) timed out - trying harder
<4>SCSI bus is being reset for host 0 channel 0.
the last 4 lines repeat indefinately.
Anybody have any idea what's wrong or how to get around this?

Subject: Where To Get Raid Info
Date: Fri, 03 Mar 2000 15:57:07 -0500
Hi,
I want to setup raid for the purposes spanning a number of
small old hard drives to make one large drive to install Linux on.
I have looked at the RAID-HOWTO and it seems that there is
not enough info there to be able to set it up. I think that
the spanning requires raid 0 or 1. Is there any other doc somewhere.
Thanks

did you call dell? they support linux on most of their machines, and
have a testing lab for linux.
