It's definitely doable but why put a scsi on a p90? Unless you can get
the scsi disk and card as a hand-me-down also it doesn't make $en$e.

I have PCChips mb also, m598. The chip is a CMedia-PCI. It uses module
cmpci. Don't know (cause you didn't say) bout your distro.
Its an experimental driver so it may not be installed, but works fine
for me.

If your motherboard doesn't have an on-board floppy controller, you'll
need to add one yourself.
Some Adaptec cards have them, some done. In general, the cards that end
in "2" (like the 1542, and 1522) have floppy controllers, while those
that end in "0" (like the 1540 and 1520) don't.
I don't think the current-models (like the 2940) come in versions with
floppy controllers.
In the worst, case situation, it shouldn't be too hard to get a floppy
controller card. I've seen generic AT-I/O cards (serial, parallel, IDE,
and floppy) sell for $15 and less. Unless your motherboard is an
unusual design, chances are that it will have all of these ports or none
of them.
If you have an IDE controller and don't want to use it, that's not a
problem. Just configure your BIOS for "no drive" and you'll be fine.
Make sure your SCSI controller has a BIOS chip, or you won't be able to
boot from a SCSI device.

Depends on what you need.
It's rather hard to use external devices with IDE interfaces.
Performance can also suffer if you have two devices attached to the same
IDE channel.
And some devices (like scanners) perform far better on SCSI than on
alternate interfaces (like parallel ports).

I, myself, was wondering whether it supports R128Pro chip set for a while
and on my Mandrake7.0, it did not support R128pro card, only supported
R128 chipset. And I forgot about it for a while until I came across your
posting here. So, I started looking and it came to me. All this linux
stuff, it's known for the open source, right? So, I just downloaded the
source from David St.Clair's homepage
(www4.ncsu.edu/~distclai/2daccel.html) and looked into the source file.
I looked in 'r128_driver.c' for 'chipID', and only saw;
case PCI_CHIP_RAGE128RE: /* Rage 128 */
case PCI_CHIP_RAGE128RF:
case PCI_CHIP_RAGE128RK:
case PCI_CHIP_RAGE128RL:
If this driver supports the R128Pro chip set, there should
be "PCI_CHIP_RAGE128PF:" or something other than the above four lines.
So, to my disappointment as to yours, it does not support the Rage128Pro
chipset. And, I have this feeling that XFree86 v4.0 does not support
Rage128Pro chipset either. Don't take my word for it though, you can poke
around its source code yourself if you really wanna find out. Maybe, I
will just right a new one myself. Um... I hope I helped get rid of the
anxiety of not knowing whether it supports it or not. I did me.

USB support in 2.2.x kernels is certainly weak, but it's much better in
the 2.3.x development kernels. I've never used it, but there's a driver in
the 2.3.x kernel for USB modems (CDCACM modems, specifically). I've no
idea how good this driver is or how many products it supports, though.
It's possible to add the 2.3.x kernel's USB support to a 2.2.x kernel by
applying a patch available from http://www.linux-usb.org. Still, all
things considered, it's best to get a conventional RS-232 serial port
modem, since you won't be dealing with bleeding-edge drivers. If you've
got some compelling reason to use a USB modem, though (say, you've already
got it, or both your serial ports are in use), a USB modem may be worth
trying.

Read the BogoMIPS-HOWTO. Your processor's BogoMIPS value may not
necessarily be indicative of your processor's clock speed.

Crossposted-To: comp.periphs.scsi

Hi,
just got a new machine to play with at work for a while...
Intel L440GX+ w/ 4 550MHz Xeon processors, 4G RAM, 6 18G SCSI-disks on
an Amaquest CTL-95U2 RAID controller.
This controller is currently config'ed to show these disks as 2 normal
SCSI disks (~8G and ~78G) using RAID 5. Win2000 came with the system,
installed on the first 4G of the first (8G) disk and sees both disks
correctly. Decided to make a test installation of RH6.1 (not my
decision...) on the remaining 4G... No real problems but the second
disk (78G) is not found by Linux, not by fdisk, nor at boot time.
The first is correctly seen as /dev/sda...
Anyone with any experience on this sort of stuff?
I saw the kernel option 'Probe all LUNs', but the kernel that I made
with that option on wouldn't work (probably something else I missed) and
then I had to leave. Is that option something that might help?
Would reconfiguring the controller to act like one disk be a reasonable
option?
BTW, how much memory can Linux use on this type of card? free only
reports ~1G RAM (or does free report RAM/processor?)

I bought an Iiyama LCD monitor (Prolite 38e) for my Linux box... but it seems
to be acting up. I can't get XF86Setup to run the way it should...
Along the top of the graphical screen should be the menu:
Mouse Keyboard Card Modeselection Monitor Other
but I have:
Mouse Keyboard Ca Mouse itor Modeselectio rd Monitor
So instead of ABCDEFGHIJ the screen seems to be ABCDEABJGHFG or somesuch...
Or somesuch. WHy should the IIyama monityor completely get the order of the
screen wrong? ANy ideas?
If I soldier on, then try to restart, then Mandrake 6.1 "couldn't execute

Yes, timidity is a software synthesizer and it uses cpu to do its magic. It
definitely sounds worse than my GUS PnP, though. And I need /dev/sequencer
support for things like DOSemu to use dos midi sequencing programs. Timidity
just plays MIDI files.

My system encounterred a disk error. The disk error message was in
a loop and could not be interrupted. I had to power down to stop it.
Of course it caused inconsistency on the disk and fsck revealed some
errors. But it never completely fixed them.I got the following
every time I ran a fsck
passs 1: Checking inodes, blocks, and sizes
hda: read_intr: status=0x59 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest Error
}
hda: read_intr: error=0x40 { UncorrectableError }, LBAsect=433520,
sector=135089, end_request: I/O error, dev 03:06 (hda), sector 135089
Error reading block 16886 (Attempt to read block from filesystem
resulted in short read) while reading indirect block of inode 7368.
Ignore error<y>?
I let it go and enterred 'y' when prompted for fix<y>?
I ran this s few times but the error remains. If I do some IO (i.e
creating new files) I will encounter the disk error again.
Is there some utility that will fix this for good like 'scandisk'
under Windows ?

I have that mainboard; rock stable. I have that video card; works great
with Xfree86 >= 3.3.4, and Corel Linux shipped with 3.3.5 IIRC.
The sound card and the USB mouse might give you some trouble. Oh yeah, if
you have any ISA cards, make sure your kernel is compiled with
"PCI_QUIRKS" support. There's something in the VIA chipset's handling of
ISA DMA that isn't done right, but that option fixes it at the cost of
some CPU time. HTH.
