Dear readers,

I was a very innocent happy man running SuSE 6.1 on my Dell Latitude CPi
266
with a nice own Linux-2.2.5-SuSE kernel brew, until I decided that my
LapTop
deserved better, a newer Kernel.
This LapTop is equiped with two PCMCIA cards (one PSION DACOM 56K modem
card,
the other a 3COM 3C589D) and they did all well. This was so until I did
a
kernel rebuild with Linux-2.2.14...
At least I'm shure it's no hardware problem, everthing is ok when Win95
:^( is
run.
All source has been compiled with the newest GCC (2.95.2) and make, also
I
upgraded glibc. It also has been compiled with te original tools from de
SuSE 6.1 distribution. The PCMCIA source I tried was:
3.0.14
3.1.11
3.1.12

Boottime results:
-PCMCIA devices seem to load, there are to beeps for every PCMCIA
device.
-But the next 6 lines indicate trouble:
          SIOCSIFADDR: No such device
eth0: unknown interface: No such device
          SIOCSIFBRDADDR: No such device
eth0: unknown interface: No such device
          SIOCSIFNETMASK: No such device
eth0: unknown interface: No such device
-I believe the messages in capitals origin from the kernel. (I grepped
around
in all kinds of code and scripts, but couldn't find any of these
strings.)
-See the bottom of this message for more of boottime trouble
indications.

After booting the following modules are loaded:
Module Size Used by
serial_cs 3984 0 (unused)
3c589_cs 7496 1
dummy0 752 1 (autoclean)
ds 5804 2 [serial_cs 3c589_cs]
i82365 23024 2
pcmcia_core 40456 0 [serial_cs 3c589_cs ds i82365]
msdos 5372 3 (autoclean)
fat 29568 3 (autoclean) [msdos]

Possibly the problem resides in de i82365 module. I think i don't have
an
i82365 PCMCIA controller, I 've got a Texas Instruments PCI1131. I did
read
the PCMCIA-HOWTO, but couldn't find something about configuring this.
And
maybe I dont need to configure this, at boot-time there 's a line which
says:
Intel PCIC probe:
  TI 1131 PCI-to-CardBus at slot 00:03, mem 0x68000000

Runtime results:
-The led on the MAU blinks short once in about 2 seconds.
-Ping doesnt respond from other hosts, 'arp -a' doesnt show a MAC
address.
-But I can ping this eth device from this host. See the result of
'ifconfig':
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:60:08:83:EE:57
          inet addr:192.168.15.200 Bcast:192.168.15.255
Mask:255.255.255.0
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
          RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:100
          Interrupt:3 Base address:0x300

When I remove the Ethernet card from its PCMCIA slot while running
'tcpdump -i eth0 > <file>', I receive on the console the message:
tcpdump: pcap_loop: read: Network is down
          linux SIOCSIFFLAGS: No such device

-Several times, for no obvious reason, I experienced that the MAU led
stops
blinking after 10 minutes or so. Than it shows an indication of proper
functioning.
In such a case I can start all kinds of TCP/IP sessions from my laptop,
BUT
starting sessions TO my laptop take place only after a delay of a few
minutes.
In such a case, pings to my LapTop respond immediatly.

I 've compiled over and over, in all kinds different settings. Sure, I
can
install some kind of distribution again, but I don't want to surrender
to
that solution because it will mess up my current installation.
And, as you see, I promise not to be desperate.

Send me some suggestions. Thanks in advance

Marc Fokker

good, if the module loads, this seems to be ok so far.
Try the following: (as root) in one console, type 'tail -f
/var/log/messages'
then (in another console, also as root) do a 'modprobe ne2k-pci'

You should get messages in the syslog (/var/log/messages), mine look
like:
ne2k-pci.c:vpre-1.00e 5/27/99 D. Becker/P. Gortmaker http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.
ne2k-pci.c: PCI NE2000 clone 'RealTek RTL-8029' at I/O 0x6100, IRQ 11.
eth0: RealTek RTL-8029 found at 0x6100, IRQ 11, 00:80:AD:3A:6B:E9.
ne2k-pci.c: PCI NE2000 clone 'RealTek RTL-8029' at I/O 0x6200, IRQ 12.
eth1: RealTek RTL-8029 found at 0x6200, IRQ 12, 52:54:00:DF:98:30.

> (linuxconf), I get something like a eth0 trying to restart, but it fails. And

Well, i am not much into this autmatic admin stuff (linuxconf et al),
all i can tell you is: do your troubleshooting by hand, so you can see
all the errors etc.

> the same thing at boot... I get a big, red [FAILED] when initializing eth0. I

At the moment, i don't think your BIOS is to blame.

Take these steps: (always watching your syslog in a second console)

1. 'lsmod' to see if the module is already loaded
2. if it is loaded, 'rmmod ne2k-pci' to remove it
3. 'insmod ne2k-pci', look for errors, also watch the syslog
if there are errors until now, come back here and post them.
4. ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.1 up
5. ifconfig eth1 192.168.2.1 up
6. verify the network cards with 'ifconfig'

you can use your ip-adresses instead of the above.

7. route add -net 192.168.1.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 eth0
8. route add -net 192.168.2.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 eth1

now you should be able to ping hosts on both networks.

So, this is what i can offer you. I hope everything is correct, you
might check it against the NET-HOWTOs, it's a long time since i had
errors on the network... :-)

Good luck and best wishes,

Stefan.

If the machine would just lock up when you insert the module - well,
that was exactly what happened when i had the irq shared...

Try the es1371 driver--I had a motherboard with a 1373 chip, and the 1371
driver worked rather well with that. If that doesn't work, try the es1370
driver--some SB128 cards require this driver. It should just be a matter
of making the modules, then modprobing them, since the card's PCI and
such. HTH,

very nice.

The chipset isn't explicitly supported, but linux is smart enough
to try working with it, and since it gets answers it understands...
things work.

When the card is detected as something it is not that should be your
clue to *not* install X at this time. Instead, you can complete the
install and reboot to find you will be in text mode. If you have
previously downloaded the X Server RPM that you need for your card
(which are all available through www.xfree86.org) you can then copy it
too your new Linux Installation, use the rpm -U command to unpack the
new X Server. The from the command line use the Xconfigurator to set up
and configure not only your card but also your monitor. From then on you
should be able to run X with no difficulties (unless you buy a new card)
and the process is the same as above except that you have to shutdown X
before you install a new X Server.

Has anyone got CDRDAO to work with the HP CDWriter Plus Series 9100?
Maybe I am using the wrong driver or something. I tried with drivers

Yea you can get the driver at linux.aureal.com. Get the
current one 1.0.5 there are problems with the beta drivers
such as no sound in KDE, some users are getting "device

Hi gurus,

Trying to fry my first CD-R under Linux but no luck so far. It starts
out OK but then fails after having written some amount of data
(different amount of MB each time). I have a brand new HP 8250i which
otherwise works fine. Have also w2k on a different partition, which
lacks an appropriate driver, so I haven't been able to make a CD under
any OS.

Here follows a sample of a failed session:

Hello all,

I'm trying to use a Digital DLT TZ86 tape drive with RedHat 6.1.
Whenever I write out small (any) file systems it writes out
multiple volumes on the tape. Why? This puzzles me... Is there
any special setup for a DLT?

Thanks for any input,
Kurt

Opps... I forgot to mention I'm using dump to create/write the
backups.

You could go to Mandrake 7.0-2 and eleminate the problem as it supports
your ATI Rage card and a host of other fast game player video cards. Red
Hat is comming around with their 6.2 (or is it 6.3) beta version.

I liked your post. Looks like we made the wrong decision and any ati,
3dfx, matrox card would have been a better choice.

For power on/off, you must have an atx board with a "software" power
switch. Try to press the button a few seconds and you might be able to
power off in any case.

For your installation freeze, you could look at the installation
messages with ctrl+F1 F2 F3 etc ... I don't remember exactly which ones
are ok. Then, you can post the latest messages/errors so that someone
can help you.
