Subject: NIC ISA PNP no worky in Compaq!

I can not get my Compaq Presario to recognize my NIC! I figured out how
to use the PNP software and it sees the card and when I un-remark the
appropriate lines and execute isapnp /etc/isapnp.conf I get the
following message:

Board 1 has Identity 1d 97 8f b7 8a 90 50 6d 50: TCM5090 Serial No
2542778250 [checksum 1d]
/etc/isapnp.conf:47 -- Fatal - resource conflict allocating 16 bytes of
IO at 210 (see /etc/isapnp.conf)
/etc/isapnp.conf:47 -- Fatal - IO range check attempted while device
activated
/etc/isapnp.conf:47 -- Fatal - Error occurred executing request
'<IORESCHECK> ' --- further action aborted

I have done this with two cards with the same error. I'm starting to
think it is the COMPAQ proprietary stuff that is holding me up. The
CMOS is so simple, but yet I feel confident that I selected the proper
settings. HELP!!!!!!

Same problem here except with Mandrake 7.0. Mine simply hangs. I've got
windoze installed on the same machine now and sound works fine there. I'm
gunna try goofing around with the settings in windoze and see if I can get
the card to work correctly in Linux. Can people with SB PCI 128's post
their config info (ie IRQ) from their sound cards under here so I know what
is working on other systems, especially Mandrake or Redhat... Also, what do
I use to get Linux to print out the IRQ it is using for each device from the
command prompt?

RH 6.1 & Yamaha CDRW 4416E
don't have enough room in the /usr/src to recompile kernel to add the
needed drivers for cdw. Can I just include it in the
Linux stanza as: append=ide-scsi or do I really need to recompile
kernel? I don't have enough room for it, can anyone
 help?

An ABP-930, which is a 'SCSI-2 ULTRA', has the old style 50 pin hidens
on the back, and a 50 pin ribbon for the internals. This thing is
supposed to be able to move 20 megs/second, but my old drives would
probably upchuck the whole lunch if they tried that. These cards are
actually a risc based interface, doing a lot of stuff the drivers don't
have to worry about. When I moved the hard drive to it so I could
remove the old adaptec card, the connector that I plugged into the drive
turned out not to be polarized, and I obeyed Murphy's Law and plugged it
in bass-ackwards. Very shortly after the memory test in post, I was
looking at a message from the card advising me the termination was
munged, would I be so kind as to double check it please?

I think I'm gonna like this card. (-:

Maybe Linux uses your HD Controller better and faster than win? Some
Boards let the frequencies in udma come out through the speaker but in
normal PIO Mode this effect wont come up.
I plugged out the speaker, now i only hear some frequencies from the hd
cabling. (VIA MVP3 and 2.2.14 Kernel, gives 14.5MB/s)

Subject: minor bttv problems
Date: Fri, 17 Mar 2000 02:15:33 -0500

I finally got the issues solved with bttv under Linux. Sound wasn't
working because I didn't specify the right mixer. The colors were all
messed up ("hot" colors showed up as green) because I was in 16-bit
mode; now that I've switched to 15-bit mode everything works fine.

But now I've got two issues left:
1) Sometimes, especially on certain channels, the image gets out of
"sync", and starts flipping horizontally, as if the hold is wrong. I've
tried changing the PLL, but to no avail (not even seeing a message in
the logs).
2) This isn't really a problem, but is still somewhat of an issue. In
Windows, when I watch the TV in a window, it comes out really smooth --
i.e., the image is antialiased. However, in Linux, the image shows up
as if it's a dumb rescale, so it looks a bit choppy unless viewed full
screen at a distance. Is there a way to enable antialiasing when the
image is scaled?

My hardware's an STB TV/PCI and a STB Velocity 128/AGP. My
conf.modules:
# Sound
alias sound es1370

# TV
alias char-major-81 bttv
pre-install bttv modprobe -k tuner
options tuner type=6
post-install bttv modprobe -k radio-aztech
options bttv vidmem=0xe20 pll=1 card=3

# Radio
alias radio radio-aztech
options radio-aztech io=0x350

Any ideas? TIA,

I think your problem has to do with interrupt conflicts.

I have an HP Pavillion 8480Z and 6.1 installed okay. Most propably
you have the Riptide modem/sound card combo which unfortunately isn't
a real modem or Soundblaster Compatible soundcard. Its a Winmodem,
which means it uses a Windoze driver and the processor to work, and
the SB compatibility is done in software as well. Get yourself a real
modem and a real soundcard. There are many to choose from... I use an
external Motorola 33.6 ModemSURFER and a Soundblaster Live PCI512.
Both work very well. Exactly what problems are you having with the
install ?

Hi!

Im using SuSE 6.2 with kernel 2.2.10, but maybe its not so different from
your distribution/setup...

SB128PCI has irq 10 and i/o 0xec00, with the drivers compiled into kernel. I
had some problems getting it to work under Win98, because the delivered
drivers for my Via vpx/vp pro chipset had problems with mapping pci irqs
correctly. In my linux setup there was pci quirks already enabled, so the
problem didnt show up with linux at all. Maybe this causes some problems,
check your chipset on the motherboard.

Check the directory /proc, with cat <filename> you can get info on the
appropriate issue, e.g. pci, irq, dma( I dont know the exact file names,
Im posting from under Win), it prints the configuration. Maybe this helps
you to find the problems.

Sb 128pci wont play midi directly, it has no chip on board to do this , you
will need to
get some program to do this for you, like timidity. But I havent tried this
myself yet...

Hope I could help

Steffen

Thnxs those who have posted help so far. I'm still playing with the IRQ's
and no luck but now I'm seriously questioning the chipset. I took a
physical look at the card today and noticed it's not an ES1371 like I
expected it to be. Don't get me wrong, it is an SB PCI 128, but it looks as
if they may have changed their chip set from the ensoniq batch. The model
listed on the card is CT4750. Two things strike me as strange... 1. CT
looks a lot like CreaTive implying that they may have changed the chip set.
2. I looked on their web site and found some info on the CT4700 which is
listed as a card distinct from the ES1370 and ES1371. It also makes me
wonder that mine is maybe only weeks out of the factory and, as of yet, has
not been encountered by enough users. Is there anyone with a model CT4750
card in their Linux box that is working?

Has anybody had any success with this board? For what it cost, I would
have hoped that it would work well with Linux, but this does not appear
to be the case. I can only run a UP kernel - SMP kernels loop endlessly
resetting the SCSI bus during the SCSI bus probe.

The W6LI has an on-board Adaptec AIC-7880 and uses the aic7xxx driver.

I have tried the following kernels:

2.2.5-15 RH 6.0 default install works fine
2.2.5-15smp RH 6.0 rpm SCSI Reset loop
2.2.10 Home build SCSI Reset loop
2.2.13 Home build SCSI Reset loop

Can anyone help or do I have to stick to using only one of the
processors whilst the other heats the room?

Earlier, I've brought up the question on how to make X work with the ATI
Rage Mobility chipset.
This chipset sits in my Compaq Armada V300 among others.

I've only made the chipset work with the 3.3.6 SVGA server, which is
very slow.

Happily, it works very fine with the ati module of XFree86 4.0.

Just set it up with XFree86 3.3.6 or the like and compile the whole
thing without any mods to the site.defs file. Then make install and
install.man and use xf86config to make a basic XF86Config file. Now
you're up and running. It worked for me at least.

Tested with:
Compaq Armada V300 w/ ATI Rage Mobility 2xAGP
Mandrake 7.0 (and 7.0-2 ;-)
Linux 2.2.14
XFree86 4.0 source distribution
