I added the length to 90000 and it seems that the dump doesn't require
another volume. It works now but is this the correct way to fix it?

The first question to ask is "Are you sure?"
This is a most unlikely problem if two cards share a MAC address. There
should be no need.
But, saying that, the only place you will find any information is from
the NIC manufacturer. They *may* have a diagnostic / tuning application
for it (which will most likely require a boot to DOS....), and it *may*
allow you to change the MAC address.
Typically, in a modern NIC, the MAC address is embedded in an ROM on the
NIC and may be possible to change if the ROM is flashable.

If both the driver and the card itself support it:
/sbin/ifconfig eth0 <other parameters> hw ether <new MAC address>
Note that you can't change the MAC address while the interface is up
(for obvious reasons ;-), so you'll have to '/sbin/ifconfig eth0 down'
first. Oh, and it would be a good idea to note the card's original
MAC address somewhere, just in case something goes wrong ... ;-)
See 'man ifconfig' for further details.

Subject: ethernet express pro
Date: Wed, 22 Mar 2000 11:18:41 +0100
Hi!
When installing Suse Linux 6.1 on my old 486er, I came across this problem:
I installed the minimum-system with just the necessary programs to run
linux. Because I want to set it up as a firewall, I've put an old ISA nic
in it, that I've found lying around at home. Because I didn't know, what
kind of nic it is, I've put it into my Win98 box and it said it is a "Intel
Ethernet express pro 10+". I found a Intel Ethernet pro in the linux
configuration menu and wanted to install it. Then it happened: When
rebooting, the system hangs with the line saying "network device eth0
shutting down". The system worked fine before I configured the nic.
After the hardware-reboot the system now hangs while booting, with the line
"setting up network device eth 0". I don't know what I did wrong, when
configuring my networkcard.
my questions:
1. How can I verify if my nic is really a Intel Ethernet express pro 10+?
(On the card is just printed: Intel Ethernet adapter 16 bit)
2. How do I guess the right i/o - parameters (io=0x260 is standard)
3. What else could I do?
Any comments would be appreciated.
Cu Joachim

I think this has nothing to do with Linux.
You have to activate the "Wakeup on LAN" option in your BIOS. Then you
can power on your box and do a normal boot by sending special packets to
it. (This should be described in the manual of the board or the NIC).
Ive never tried it, but there should be some tools that can initiate a
remote power on.

This compiles the kernel, but does not install it.
Do a make bzLilo to compile and install it or copy the files vmlinuz
and System.map from /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/... (somewhere in that
tree) to /boot and rerun lilo.

Have a look at /etc/lilo.conf. Theres one or more lines starting with
boot=.... Those describe the installed kernels.

I use a 386/40, 8Mb RAM, 127MB HD, hercules-compatible mono card and
monitor as an dial-in-server. Running SuSE 5.3. I tried to run X-Win-
dow on that machine for 5 minutes, then i decided that this was not
a good idea. IMHO you need a resolution of 800x600 with 256 colors
to work with X.
You need an xfree-mono-server with support for hercules compiled
(the version that came with SuSE 5.3 had it, but an older redhat
4.2? i also tried didnt support hercules, i dont know about actual
distributions) if you want to use X-Window. I had to edit
/etc/XF86Config (I took a "skeleton" configfile from a VGA-machine
and changed monitor, device and screen section).

ftp.promise.com have beta drivers for this card.
The card works for me under RedHat 6.1 kernel 2.1.12-20 (as a module)
but I do not use it to boot. I use it to provide two extra ide
channels in addition to the pair on my motherboard.
According to the information Promise supply with the driver the
Ultra66 can boot a disk.
It may be worthwhile obtaining the drivers from the promise ftp site
and/or viewing the technical info on their web pages.

Not from ELSA, but please see the "big list" at
