What board manufacturer is that ? All Pentium-and-above boards
should have 2 serial onboard ports, unless the manufacturer decided to
implement one of them as a built-in winmodem , which may or may not
work in Linux, depending from the availability of a driver.
If you don't know the manufactuer, write down the BIOS identification
string that shows up during system start at the bottom of the screen.
Then go to http://www.ping.be/bios and look it up there.

I just bought a APC BK-650 UPS, in part because I saw that the
company had released the control software under Linux. But the UPS came without
the RS-232 cable and the reseler here says they would have to special
order it of me (expensive).

I checked the UPS howto, but the pinout there was apparently adjusted to the
homebrew control program that is included in the howto. I want to run
teh APC supplied software, but I can't find the pinout on the APC site
(www.apcc.com) The URL that was mentioned in the UPS howto no longer works,
since APC apparently got rid of it when they reorganised their pages.

Forgive me, I didn't make myself clear. I have SysV IPC compiled in.
I am not using SysV filesystem *at all*. Not compiled in, not as a
module, nothing. It's disabled in the kernel. Nada.

Cdrecord works like a charm. I wouldn't dream of contradicting the
author of this program, but there is some confusion somewhere, as
cdrecord apparently does *not* need SysV filesystem.

If you'll change the "mount" command above to include the flag

   -o ro

you'll get rid of this particular message. This specifies read-only
to "mount" (which is what it ends up doing anyway).

> mount: No medium found

Well, this and the following messages seem to indicate that the system
thinks there's no disc in the drive. Forgive me for asking a stupid
question, but there *is* a disc in the drive when you try to mount it,
isn't there?

Looks okay to me, too... looks pretty much like my device file here.

> Error: Not ready -- (Sense key=2x02)

This is the same message I get when booting with no disc in the drive.
Don't worry about this, it's probably normal (unless you in fact do
have a disc in the drive on bootup...)

As far as cdfs, I have never heard of that particular filesystem.
The man page for mount doesn't list it as one of the options, so
perhaps it is in fact the same as iso9660. Oh, wait... it just
occurred to me. Check to make sure you have iso9660 support in
the kernel. It must be compiled, either into the kernel statically
or as a module.

I'm afraid that's all I can come up with. Hope it helps.

A minor issue with this fstab regarding NTFS is that the "perm" setting
here gives user 500 read and write permissions. However (at least in
kernel 2.2.5-15), NTFS write support is experimental and might be
dangerous. A safer bet for just accessing the data might be with a
perm setting of 444.

Mike,
I am using a Lucent (win) modem in my desktop under Linux without any
problem.
        Details are : 300MHz P-II / 64 MB RAM / IBM 4.3 GB / Seagate 8.4 GB /
NEC ATAPI CDROM

and the modem in question is Lucent K56Flex internal winmodem.

The driver module is provided by Lucent is in binary format (no sourc
code) and works only under Redhat 6.x
Visit www.linmodems.org for info about the driver module.
I tried it using under Caldera but no luck. Let me know if you manage
to make it work under caldera.

Cheers ....

Subject: Serial Ports that don't work.
Date: Thu, 23 Mar 2000 13:33:14 +0000

A friend had recently upgraded his PC and lent me his old motherboard
and processor (an AMD K6/200). I have installed this in my existing
case in place of the old motherboard and processor but now neither of
the serial ports will work.

I have checked that the little cables that connect the 9-pin connectors
on the case to the motherboard have the stripe next to pin 1 on the
motherboard (marked) just like on the old motherboard.

The BIOS is from Award and has a menu to configure on board
peripherals. I have tried the two serial ports with each of the two
manual settings as to which is which (which I/O and interrupt) as well
as auto.

The kernal (2.2.14) detects both ports with the standard I/O and IRQs
and reports both as 16550As.

If I attach a modem to one of the ports and then try to dial into the
internet the DTR light on the modem lights but the TxD light doesn't and
the modem doesn't seem to respond in any way and doesn't grab the line.
The same result from the other port. A serial mouse doesn't work on
either port.

Looking at /proc/interrupts IRQs are logged against the port when
characters are being sent (Tx FIFO empty?) but nothing seems to get
received.

Does anyone have any sugestions as to what may be going on here please?
I don't have the machine in front of me know but if the motherboard type
or BIOS version were relavent I could find them tonight.

Thanks for your help.
Steve.

It's possible (I have run into this before) that the headers on the
motherboard don't have the same pinout. In that case, the ribbon
cable extenders that run to the back chassis are wired differently.
If that is the case, you might be sol on this. See if you can get
the guy who gave you the motherboard to pull the old cables from
his case and give them to you. He should have received new ones
with his new motherboard in any case.

You need to load the module es1370. As root, do:
/sbin/modprobe es1370
See if it works. Then, you can load automatically the module in one of
the init scripts.

Well the chipset on a NE2000 is... NE2000 :)
If it's PnP, you need to configure the hardware resources on the card
before you can use it. Use pnpdump and isapnp - see their man pages for
details. Then you have to load the appropriate module for the card -
"/sbin/modprobe ne" (as root, of course). Then configure your network,
depending on your distribution.
