I know DTF drives aren't that common, so finding help on the subject is
tough :)
a "cat proc/scsi/scsi" displays the following info about the drive:
***********************************************
Host: scsi0 Channel: 00 Id: 05 Lun: 00
Vendor: SONY Model: GY-2120 Rev: 1.00
Type: Sequential-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02

"mt -f /dev/st0 status" returns:

File number=0, block number=0, partition=0.
Tape block size 0 bytes. Density code 0x0 (default).
Soft error count since last status=0
General status bits on (45010000):
BOT WR_PROT ONLINE IM_REP_EN
***********************************************
I can rewind, retension, etc. BUT, when attempting to:
***********************************************
"dd if=/dev/st0 of=/dev/null bs=131072 skip=458 count=10000"
***********************************************
The skip parameter will not work. I can extract data from the
beginning for any length, but am unable to skip to a given point on the
tape.
I've heard of similar problems under Solaris that were fixed by adding
drive info to st.conf, but am unsure of how to apply this fix, if
applicable,
under RedHat 6.1.
The st.conf entries that apply to the tape drive under Solaris are

We are experiencing some TERRIBLE packet loss on our linux boxes.
Our boxes that run on an AMD K6 with 3Com 905b or c running Redhat 6.0
or 6.1 run just fine.
Our boxes that run on an AMD K7 with 3Com 905b or c running Redhat 6.1
get 22-39% packet loss. Has anyone else seen these kind of probles on
the AMD K7s? The switch is not to blame. I have run a direct with a
cross over.
Thanks,

: No answers, but something you can try, make your boot floppy as a

: Example:
: make bzdisk ROOT_DEV=/dev/sdb3
problem is: there IS no floppy on this box! no easy way to make one, either.
I did find a workaround. I patched 2.2.14 with usb and that did load.
but here's the weird part: when I use the stock slackware 7.0 kernel
(2.2.13, as build by slackware and untouched by me) the system boots
AND you see textmode come up after the screen freaks out a bit ;-) the
bootup msgs can be read after the first few lines have come out.
BUT when I build a custom kernel and launch it via lilo, I get
'loading 2.2.14 ..." but after that, the video does NOT show text msgs
scrolling up. I took this as a broken kernel, when IN FACT IT WASN'T.
it DID boot and when I did a startx after loggin in, X did come up ok.
so there's something having to do with resetting the funky video mode
that the bios set (there's a welcome graphic at bios/boot time) that
the slackware kernel resets by ALL of my kernels don't ;-( damned if I
can figure it out, too.
I tried vidmode, I even tried 'vga=ask' at lilo. lilo won't ask for
my kernel, only for the slackware kernels. very very weird.
but if I just type blindly (the user/pass) after I hear the disk quiet
down, I can login and if I type startx, X does come up and resets the
garbage on the screen.
so the problem might be related to some kind of hardware probing or
init that the slackware kernel does NOT do and all the other ones do.
and of course. 2.3.99 still won't even BOOT from lilo.

If you want stability, get Solaris. You can even get Solaris 8
for $75 from Sun to cover the cost of the manual and CD. Hell,
you can even get the source code free of charge!
And, gasp, Solaris now even runs on Intel platforms!i
Trust me, these Solaris guys know what they are doing as well.

I am having a problem with my soundcard. I want to connect my
satellite receiver to the soundcard so that I can record radio programs
to listen to at a more sociable hour.
I am running kernel 2.2.7 and have a PCI128 and I have compiled support
for Ensoniq 1371 into the kernel as a module. I am not sure that
everything is correctly set up. This is a PCI card and seems to be
detected and work OK (it appears in /proc/interrupts and plays sound
OK) When I play sound through the card it plays but I cannot get it to
record sound. I have tried using the microphone on the microphone
socket and line-in on the line-in socket. I do not have the X Window
sytem on this machine as I want to keep it simple (it is intended to be
part of the HiFi) so I cannot access the mixer.
wavrec does not work - it fails with "Invalid argument: Audio block
size (64 bytes)"
rec (front end to sox) creates a wav file but the wav file does not
contain any sound.
I can dd from /dev/audio to a file but this file also contains no
sound.
lsmod reports that these modules have loaded:
Module Size Used by
es1371 23628 0 (autoclean)
soundcore 2372 4 (autoclean) [es1371]
serial 41940 0 (autoclean)
memstat 1352 0 (unused)
I have also tried loading soundlow and sound but this did not help.
I cannot cat /dev/sndstat, I get: "Operation not supported by device"
If I cat /dev/sound I get:

Perhaps. How broadly Amazon's patents can be wielded is a matter of
debate, at best. Also, Amazon's chief, Jeff Bezos, has recently called for
reforms of the patent system. I've got links to this call, as well as Tim
O'Reilly's take on the matter and Richard Stallman's, on one of my own web

Is it a PnP card? If so, did you try activating the card using
isapnptools and then loading the sb driver/module?

Not sure if this particular model is supported... haven't checked. But,
you can go to freshmeat.net and get many different cd recording
packages... cdroast being one.
There should also be some HOWTO's available at the Linux Documentation

Sorry for this double-posting:
In the past, I've grown up to computers with UNIX systems, etc.
Now that I've purchased "The Complete LINUX Kit" with the CD
having Linux v1.1 kernel, X Windows System Version 11 Release 6
and a whole bunch of other stuff, by SYBEX.
I installed MSDOS 6.22. Then installed Mitsumi CD drivers. I have
a (Gateway) P5-120 and 32MB of ram and a 125MB IDE (St3144at)
and a 1.44MB 3.5" floppy drive. It seems adaquate for Linux, so
far. No "Windows" anything on the previously blank drive.
I go to the D:\ drive (CD) and ran "rawrite" to make the two boot
disks, that worked. Then booted them both. Next I booted and
logged in as root. Typed "setup" to install the Linux system. And
tried to figure out what next, it can't find the CD!
Amazing! What gives?
I think it's a mitsumi type. It is a master on the secondary IDE
connector.
I have the "Gateway CD install disk" that goes with the CD and
used that to install the DOS drivers. DOS finds the CD on
power-up, although it does complain that there's a "hardware
conflict" and have to hit ESC on every power-up/reset. This
"conflict" appeared when I plugged in the CD drive. It's on its
own cable by itself separate from the IDE cable.

Yeah, I think a possible workaround was to create a script to run the

Nice. Since the extended partition includes cylinders > 1023, I
however still would recommend that the ID of the extended partition is
changed from 05 to 0F, or Linux extended 85.
I have seen a number of cases with boot problems and data loss when
DOS/Windows attempts to enter an extended partition type 05 above
cylinder 1023.
