Yes i have the 'weak sound' problem with my
Apollo Pro motherboard.

I have a Gigabyte GA-6VX-4X motherboard
which uses VIA Apollo Pro VT82C694X North Bridge
chip and the VT82C686A South Bridge chip

I am using the onboard sound.
Under Win98 the sound is significantly weaker
than my old SB16. ie. without amplified speakers
i didn't notice that the sound was actually
working.
With amplified speakers everything is working
fine.

Under linux Redhat 6.2 kernel 2.2.14, however i
just cant get the sound to work.
I compiled in VIA chipset sound option but
no joy as yet.

When you create your ext2 partition, one of the things you must do is
to specify the partition type. There are a slew of hexadecimal codes
that stand for various partiton types. If I were a betting man, I'd
bet that the partition type code on the partition in question was 6,
which indicates an MS-DOS partition. Ext2 partitions have a code of
0x83, which indicates a "Linux native" partition.

You can verify this easily by typing (as root)

   fdisk /dev/hd...

where the (...) is replaced by a, b, or whatever letter corresponds
to the drive in question (i.e. the master drive on the primary IDE
controller is /dev/hda, the primary slave is /dev/hdb, and so on).
When you get the "Command" prompt, type "p" and Return, and you'll
see a list of your partitions. The partition types will be in the
"Id" column.

You can change the partition type with the "t" menu option under
fdisk (I believe this is a non-destructive change). Once you change
the partition type to 83, Windoze will no longer see the partition
and will quit trying to format it. Once you're done, give the "w"
command to fdisk, and it'll commit your change. REBOOT after that.

Good luck.

Subject: scsi timeout problem-

Hello. I'm looking for some recommendations to
narrow down this scsi timeout problem taking place.
The system is Debian2.1, kernel 2.2.14 with a
Buslogic BT958 controller. Connected to the 50
pin port is a Toshiba CD-rom and a Quantum Fireball
8.4gig drive terminated at the HDD. Never had a
problem with just this setup. Now I have added
a Quantum Atlas III 18.2 gig drive in single
ended mode on the 68 pin connector using a good cable
and an active terminator. All drives are recognized
correctly, it seems. The AtlasIII is able to be
partitioned and formatted as ext2 without any problems.
Now, in the process of copying the contents of the
old drive to the new using cp, timeouts are occurring,
looking like this in the logs:

Mar 30 17:18:23 td2 kernel: 0 00 02 00

and finally

Mar 30 17:18:26 td2 kernel: scsi0: Tagged Queuing now active

These are only very small excerpts from the logs. The
logs are filled with this stuff covering a period of
only about a minute or so.
The 50 pin drive is Target 0, and the Atlas III (68pin) is
Target 1.

Any suggestions on where or what to look for would be
appreciated.

FWIW, I have a somewhat weird solution. Use a disk-based extender-BIOS...I
have used this kind of thing with both Maxtor and Western Digital drives and
they work great. I can post/email a disk image of either the MAXiblast
diskette or the W.D. EZdrive diskette.

In order for this to work, you'll have to reconfigure the machine so the
4.3G drive is Master & hence gets booted by the main h/w BIOS first...this
then activates the disk-based extender-BIOS.

The only potential stumbling block is the need for an OS switcher--I think
this will conflict with the extender-BIOS if you try to put it on the HD,
since they both will want to have the boot sector 0. This limitation can be
overcome by using a Linux boot diskette to get to whatever drive/partition
you've got '/boot' on.

Let me know if you want it emailed or posted (I'll put up a temp. HTTP: page
w/ the disk image).

Hi Gregory -

I know less than nothing about both USB and zip drives, but I'm 95% sure
that the upcoming 2.4 kernel series is going to be the first to support USB

I know its jumping the gun, but I bet the latest 2.3 series kernels are

For many businesses worldwide, IBM AS/400s are the core of their computing
platform. And it's not just businesses that own them, most US district & circuit
courts either use AS/400s, or are migrating to them. For anyone that's really
serious about their business, Windows is not option, and Novell lacks the edge
that IBM has with it's rather large user base. You don't use an NT (even
"Advanced Server") or Novell-based machine to search through a 350 million
record multi-table database. Ever try an inner join on a such a beast? Well, I
have. :)

You might want to note that IBM is seriously considering ending it's AIX
development and moving to Linux. As a matter of fact, you can now order Linux
based AS/400s directly from www.as400.ibm.com. Do you honestly think that Big
Blue would make such a move because of Linux's "hype"? Maybe to some extent, but
there's big money at play and making a mis-step in this field could cost IBM
billions of dollars, both in support costs and in sales, worldwide. I like to
think that IBM has some of the finest and brightest engineers and analysts
working for them and I'm sure they've looked into Linux's marketability and
performance before even considering their options. IBM, so far, has followed the
right _general path_ for both it's end-users and developers (from the time it
introduced it's first typewriter), and I'm sure that it will continue to do so.
Besides, if this weren't true, care to explain what makes IBM so successful
(big, powerful, and respected)?

Andy

PS: Don't reply with the "right place at the right time" line, though it's valid
for most arguments, it's just too broad for this one.
PPS: This is _my_ opinion, feel free to disagree.
