You may wish to try the nuni boot loader. It eliminates the relevance
of cyl 1024, and other bios related problems because it does not use the
bios.

Also, nuni has a mini boot manager called 'nunimbr', which allows you to
choose any arbitrary partition at boot time so you can boot systems
after changing things around without any setup or alteration of nunimbr.

You can get nuni-0.08 at
ftp://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/system/boot/loaders/

Actually, it's running vmware+Windows that would 'cost money'.
Quicktime Pro is only 30 bux.

I am trying to install a c.itoh line printer on Slack 7 on ttyS0. I can
print through the parallel interface fine, both with cat file >/dev/lp0
and lpr -Pprinter file. When I connect the serial interface, and modify
the printcap, I cannot print. If I cat file >/dev/ttyS0, the prompt
waits for 1-2 seconds, then returns-but no printout. Lpr returns
immediately with no cf or df file in the spool directory. I thought that
maybe this was a speed issue, but I set the printer to 9600, and stty
reports 9600. What am I missing? ANY pointer or help on this is
appreciated...

I have a 612C running on a K6-2 450Mhz (fairly new) currently under
Mandrake 7 and Slackware 7, and HAD it running a month ago under
Mandrake 6.x and Slackware 3.4. Under Slackware I used apsfilter both
times and Mandrake just the normal printool(?).

Under apsfilter there isn't a 612C entry but the printer how-to told
me which to use ... the hp500 I think (I'm not at home right now).
Also, in all cases the utility recognized my parallel port and
suggested I use it as default (which I did) then I printed the test
document.

Good luck! It might be a hardware problem ... I had a black cartridge
go bad BUT no printer error, just stopped printing. Changed the
cartridge and all was well.

What was the command you used to mount these ZIP disks? Windows-formatted
ZIPs almost always get mounted like this, where X corresponds to the
place the IDE cable is attached (a,b,c,d--usually d):

mount -t vfat /dev/hdX4 /mnt/zip
or
mount -t vfat /dev/hdX1 /mnt/zip

ZIP disks these days are usually partitioned such that all their data is
on partition 4, but there are some odd ones that live on partition 1.

Which kernel are you using? The 2.2.5 kernel that shipped with RedHat 6.0
and SuSE 6.1 had some problems with ZIP disks. These have been fixed in
any kernel higher than 2.2.7--make sure this is not your problem....

I have been having the same (or a VERY similar) problem on my system.
With the help of some usenet searches I narrowed it down to my 2.2.14
kernel.

I reverted back to my 2.2.13 and all works well. I don't use my
burner regularly so it took awhile after the kernel upgrade to notice
the problem.

After being in email touch with another sufferer he mentioned that
2.2.15-xx also works on his system.

I thought it was maybe my old Slackware 3.6 distribution BUT I
recently upgraded to Slack 7 and the same issue, 2.2.13 OK and 2.2.14
intermittently supplies the
>cdrecord: I/O error. write_g1: scsi sendcmd: retryable error
>status: 0x2 (CHECK CONDITION)
 error.

I have gone back to 2.2.13 and patiently waiting for the official
2.2.15 release.

Hope this information helps you out.

PS. I always compile my own kernels and I always re-use my old .config
file. My CDRecorder has worked since 2.2.11 I think (thats when I
bought it).

The patched binary works fine in Debian (both potato and woody). I'm not sure

Subject: Network routes won't come up on Asus P3V4X running Redhat 6.2 w/3Com cards
Date: 31 Mar 2000 09:36:29 -0800

I've been using a PCI 3Com 3c905 Boomerang card under Redhat v6.1 for
some time now, and the 3c59x.o module worked just fine. After my old
Asus motherboard croaked, I moved everything to an Asus P3V4X
motherboard, and installed an extra PCI 3Com 3c905B Cyclone card in
addition to the cards already in the system. At this point, whenever
I rebooted, both cards would come up under the 3c59x.o module, but no
network routes would come up except the one for the lo0 device. If I
tried to manually enter the routes, I'd get a "no route to network" or
some such, and then the whole machine would hang in about a minute.
This seemed really odd, since you'd normally get at least a route to
the network each ethernet interface is attached to.

I then tried upgrading to Redhat 6.2, no luck. Then I thought maybe
I'd messed up the routing information under
/etc/sysconfig/static-routes, or in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts,
but it all looked right. I then reinstalled Redhat 6.2 from scratch,
using only the original PCI 3Com 3c905 Boomerang card, still no joy.

Now I'm wondering if my BIOS settings or the positions of the PCI
cards in the motherboard are causing the problems. Here's my current
layout, anyone care to show me what I've done wrong?

AGP slot: Guillermot 3D Prophet GeForce 256 DDR/DVI
PCI slot 1: PCI 3Com 3c905B Cyclone
PCI slot 2: PCI 3Com 3c905 Boomerang
PCI slot 3: empty
PCI slot 4: empty
PCI slot 5: Adaptec 29160 SCSI controller
PCI slot 6: empty
ISA slot: Soundblaster AWE32

Thanks!
