I've tried several "generic" 4x36 true parity simms in the 428 cards
with mixed results. It seems odd, but I haven't found any pattern to
the types of simms that the 428 likes. Currently where I work we are
using simms from a local vendor... the chips are Fujitsu (I believe)
but we've tried other simms in the past with the same chip (but on a
slightly different board) with no success.
My advice is to stick with the approved list, or buy simms that
someone has verified with the card...

Subject: Toshiba T6963C LCD controller driver available now
Date: 12 Apr 2000 17:27:05 GMT

Hi!

I just wanted to inform you that I have written a Linux kernel
console driver for LCDs based on the Toshiba T6963C controller.
Unlike the driver e.g. from lcdproc.omnipotent.net, this one
acts as a console driver which can fully replace a VGA card
(login prompt, ncurses applications), which is reasonable
with an e.g. 40x16 display (and would not make sense with 20x2).

The driver is suited for kernel 2.2.10, other 2.2.x should
work as well. However, it is still in alpha state and therefore
not intended for novice Linux users or those not familiar with
the T6963C (unless you like to waste around US$ 100 for a
display :-) ). The display will be attached to the parallel
port.

The driver can be downloaded from
http://wwwthep.physik.uni-mainz.de/~frink/linux.html

Best regards,

Alex

Before doing an eject, make sure you unmount the device first.
I set up and alias the unmounts first before ejecting.

I am sure that this problem is not new....

I have a desktop happily shared by Win95 and Linux. There is only one HD
(EIDE)
with several partitions.
Some days ago I decided to upgrade Win95 to 98 and everything went fine.

Few hours later the machine hang up on Windows. Scandisk reported a
"damaged cluster" and refused to repair it.After that Win98 works more
or less but
e.g. defrag does not (hangs when hits the damn cluster).

Now the strange is that the same problem came out on one of the LINUX
partitions.
Just the one adjacent to the Windows partition. I wonder if I had Win98
invading the Linux partition and screwing it up.
Briefly, by running fsck I could fix the partition for some time but the
problem came again.
My question: should I change the disk or reformatting would be enough?
In case, should I use low-level formatting or mkfs with some option will
do?
What about the Win part?
Any help would be appreciated

Subject: xfree86 GUI not working
From: katastrophy <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Date: Wed, 12 Apr 2000 11:00:15 -0700

I have the SIS SG86C205 video card, it's built into the IBM
Aptiva P166 machine I have. I've installed Redhat 6.1 recently,
but cannot get the x windows server to work at all. The server
installed ( I wasn't able to do a GUI install) but when I do
startx, the picture is garbled and full of static. The
xfree86.org website says my card is supported at xf86_svga but I
cannot get it to work. I've put in all the correct (at least I
think correct info) about the monitor and video card
specifications. The monitor is a old Hyundai from 1989 that only
goes to 6408x480 with a very low sync rate. I wonder if anyone
has any helpful hints or any experience with this type of
problem? Would it be easier just to install a different type of
card? I would appreciate it if anyone has any ideas. email -

Sorry I dont know the solution to the problem, but another Athlon
user Joe Pfeiffer ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) aperantly has the same problem
with two memory sticks. His motherboard was a Biostar M7MKA.
I also have an Athlon, but only have one 256 Mb memory stick and have
no problems. Have run memtest86 and kernel compiling with no
problems. (my motherboard: Asus K7V with VIA KX133)

Could be a general problem with the Athlon motherboards?

Please write to this newsgroup what you find out.

Look at the big chip on the card. Is it an Advansys? If so, just use
the Advansys
drivers when Installl asks for which scsi drivers to use.

SIIG should have a website, or even Advansys, should you need
'drivers' for your
bios. Don't know if you really do need this. Can't find mine just
now- I DO want to
use it on my new Dual cpu board (BP6). Thanx for reminding me I had
a spare scsi
card here (somewhere)!

Subject: CompactFlash card- Imagemate Parallel Port Reader- how???
Date: 12 Apr 2000 18:42:26 GMT

Sandisk is apparently ducking the question: Why no DOS (or Linux)
drivers for their Parallel Port
CF card reader: "Imagemate"?? Only Windoz, Windoz, ad infinitum! Yet
they produce DOS drivers
for some of their other stuff according to their website.
www.sandisk.com

Read the 'OEM' page and they discuss how compatible their cf cards
are to the DOS filesystem, etc.
The thought ocurrs to me that command-line access to the cf card may
be 'trivial'. Is there a scintilla
of truth to this notion?? I.e., with the cardreader hooked to the
parallel port, perhaps Linux could access
the cf card as an IDE device. Without the cutsie icon on the desktop
like their program creates- convenient
but not reallly needed.

Any thoughts or leads much appreciated.

Hello,

I am planning to buy a new computer, with an Athlon system.
But i am concerned about compatibility with linux.

Has anybody installed Linux on an amd's ATHLON processor on Asus K7 V
(via 133 chipset) motherboard ?
(I plan to use IDE hard-disk and ATI 128 rage pro card)

As the chipset is rather new, a friend of mine told me Linux may be not
entirely "compatible".
Thanks in advance

Thanks Mike... I thought Wayne's HOWTO looked pretty good. I'll give a try
as soon as I get my partition problem figured out. I used the randish
partition manager to shrink a win98 FAT partition to make room for linux.
Now even though fdisk correctly reports the size of the FAT partition as 22
gigs, Windows explorer says it's only 11 gigs. I've done the scandisk and
norton thing to no avail. I want to get this issue resolved before I try
again with the RedHat install. Thanks again...
