Host-based printer: A printer with no real "brain", just printheads, a
mechanism for moving them around, and a small controller that only accepts
a weird control language which no one knows the details of. The computer
must act as the printer's brain here, hence the name "host-based." Real
Printers have some RAM and a Postscript/PCL/Epson interpreter inside.
Host-based printers are cheaper than Real Printers, so they've become
popular for much the same reason LoseModems have become popular.
You could write a driver for your printer, of course... just hope you have
a good deal of time to spare and a fair bit of programming skill.
You can also connect this printer to a Windows machine, enable file/print
sharing on said Windows machine, configure Samba appropriately on your
Linux box, hook the two machines together, and go. Or get a Lexmark Optra
Color 40, a reasonably cheap Postscript inkjet printer...

Hello Lucas,
I have already asked 3com about this modem. Here is their reply :
============= Begin Reply from 3Com =========================
Thank you for contacting 3Com Online Support.
According to the information you have provided, your modem is an OEM
product for Gateway. 3Com sells certain computer manufacturers the =
modem
technology which they customize and include in their computers as part
of their system. However, 3Com does not support those modems. The PC
manufacturer is responsible to its customer. It is up to the PC
manufacturer to provide the repair, upgrades or updates, and support =
for
the modems they include with their systems. 3Com modems which are
included with a computer manufacturer's system are built to the =
computer
manufacturer's specifications, and are not the same as standard 3Com
modems.
Thank you,

Thus it would seem that I can get the Programming Specifications
for this modem from Gateway so that I can write drivers for the modem
on various operating sytems that I may choose to run on my
Gateway Solo 9300 CX Portable.
In particular, I would like to use the modem under Linux 2.2.12 Kernel
version which I am currently running on my Solo 9300 CX Portable.
I would appreciate any help that you can provide.
Thanks in advance.

Subject: Newbie X-CD-Roast Question
Date: Thu, 13 Apr 2000 03:16:15 GMT
My installation is RH 6.2, Dell Precision Workstation 220, all
PCI board. Using 2.2.14UP kernel.
When I launch X-CD-Roast 0.96ex as root, I get this message:
"No Generic_SCSI-Support has been detected. Without it, no SCSI
Device can be detected or used by X-CD-Roast. Please load the
sg-module (e.g. insmod-sg) or recompile your kernel with
Generic-SCSI-Support"
I then, as root, execute insmod sg It appears to
go fime.
I try X-CD-Roast again, same result.
My fstab is:
/dev/hda6 / ext2 defaults 1 1
/dev/hdb5 /boot ext2 defaults 1 2
/dev/hda7 /home ext2 defaults 1 2

/dev/hda1 /mnt/vfat vfat owner,user,exec,dev,suid,w,noauto,conv=auto 1 1
A blank CD-R mounts fine.
What am I doing wrong/failing to do?
Thanks

HELLO:The message youre getting is likely because you have windows at the
front of the drive and its reading it as the boot partition. In order for
linux to boot it needs at least a small part of it within about the first
500mb (1024 cylinder)of the drive. You can either put linux on the first
partition of the drive and windows on the second or make a small /boot
partition of around 10mb or so within the first 500mb.For other info and
links try my site at http://www.geocities.com/wrattz/linux1.html good luck

Cabling!
You need either a crossover cable, crossover box or hub
to get two machines to connect via stright-thru (normal)
2/4 pair cabling. One machine's RX pair must be connected
to the the other machines TX pair. Straight thru would
give to TX connecting to TX.

[fstab snipped]
More information is required. Is this an IDE or SCSI CD-RW? What does
lsmod show after the insmod command? (Should show ide_scsi, scsi_mod, and
sg at least.) Does the boot log say that your CD-RW is registered with
the ATAPI CD-ROM driver? (If so, you must edit lilo.conf so that it
contains the line "append=hdX=ide-scsi" where X is the CD-RW location,
re-run LILO, and reboot!) Where are those symbolic links for /dev/cdro
and /dev/cdrom1 pointing to? What does "cdrecord -scanbus" show?
xcdroast is a frontend to the cdrecord and mkisofs programs. cdrecord is
what does the cd-writing, so its error messages are more to be trusted
than anything xcdroast spits out.
>A blank CD-R mounts fine.
Do tell how you managed that. Also, you might wish to read the CD-Writing
HOWTO-- http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/CD-Writing-HOWTO.html . Read it
again if you have already read it; there is a lot of info in there and
it's easy to miss something.

Most (all?) Linux distributions include named, which will resolve
names exactly the same for you as it does for your ISP. Fire
it up, set your resolv.conf to use 127.0.0.1 (yourself) and
you don't need to change it to match your ISP every time you

I also had problems getting my epson 740 to print correctly. I downloaded
the same drivers that you have installed, but it didn't help until I added a
few lines to /etc/conf.modules.
I'm using redhat 6.1, so this correction is probibly already taken care of in
redhat 6.2, but just in case, check that your /etc/modules file has the
following lines:
alias /dev/printers lp #only for devfs?
alias /dev/lp* lp #only for devfs?
alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc #missing in Red Hat 6.0-6.1
I found this somewhere in redhat's wedsite.
hope this helps
