Then where does the AMD 586 fall in this scheme? I am using a 586 on my
computer at home and it seems to be a much speeded up 486 (133 Mhz).

I have problems with installation of the integrated network card Netflex-L
ENET (AMD Chipset AM79C965)
Anyone has an idea about a driver that works with
this card ? (special parameters, etc....)

DON'T buy the Lexmark Z-series stuff. They're Windows-only printers.

Corel lost the mice on my boxes too. I am now happily running SuSE.
The difference between win and linux is great if you use a linux not
based on Debian. IMHO
Corel is like doze; A pretty install with nothing under the hood.

IIRC (and I've already got confused on this thread once ;) the 5x86 chips
were just suped-up 486s, with 2x the L1 cache and a better FPU unit. I used
to have a 133MHz one, seemed quite nippy. Pin and code compatible, which
made em nice 486 upgrades.

Yep, forgot the K5, oops. The 6 in the name kinda gives it away, must have
got confuzzled with the k6/k6-2/k6-3 business.

Subject: cacheing and memory usage problem
Date: Fri, 14 Apr 2000 16:50:04 +0100
Hi
We are running:
Linux Redhat 6.0 (dual Pentium II MMX 300MHz)
Kernel 2.2.10
DPT Raid controller (64MB on board cache RAM) configured for RAID 5
consisting of 6 IBM DCAS-34330 SCSI hard drives one of which is acting as a
hot swap drive.
256MB RAM
We're having a problem whilst trying to write a large amount of data (3
million+ records) to a mysql database. Our problem lies with cache/buffer
control. Although Linux caches the data we have found that over time the
performance of the database dwindles to almost nothing.
We are running multiple(10) processes for testing purposes. When they are
first started they each occupy approximately 10% of the cpu time. Over time
the amount of buffers and cache increases whilst cpu time decreases to about
1% and sometimes less. Eventually the amount of data being written to the
hard drives is at the rate of 1k/sec.
At this point all the memory seems to be allcoted between buffers and cache.
What we want to do is control the amount of cache/buffers the OS allocates
and to be able to flush the data from these buffers/cache to the hard disk
at a much faster rate.
Is this user definable or must it be compiled into the kernel?
We have set different parameters for 'update' to try and get the OS to flush
the cache/buffers more frequently.
We have also tried varying amounts of cache on the DPT Raid controller in
case that was an issue.
Any help would be appreciated
Thanks
Dean

The mouse type for X is selected by two lines in the XF86COnfig file.
The first is a mouse type - this should be "PS/2" now an will probably
need to be "Microsoft" or "Logitech".
The second is the mouse port - this should be "/dev/mouse" or "/dev/psaux"
now and should be changed to "/dev/ttyS0" or "/dev/ttyS1" (or change the
/dev/mouse link).

I'm looking for some wireless LAN products for home use that will work with
both Linux (RedHat) and Windows 98.
So far I've seen 2 possible product lines:
Lucent ORINOCO - http://wavelan.com/products/
3Com Air Connect - http://www.3com.com/mobile/wireless/product.html
For now I have 2 PC's I need to connect that are about 50 feet apart. The
network cards will need to be PCI or ISA cards. I may be adding a notebook
computer so PC cards should also be available.
Does anyone out there have any experience with these products using Linux?
Any other recommendations?

I want to install a new hard drive on a linux box that I plan to use as a
backup/server machine. I'm pretty sure that the motherboard on the machine
only supports up to 8.4gig. However, some sources I've read suggest that
disk geometry can be handed off to operating systems that support it. So,
in a nutshell, can linux (RH 6.0) handle a larger drive, even if the
motherboard does not?

Can anyone please help me as I am getting to the end of my tether!!! I have
a WangDAT 3200 SCSI DAT drive and a Yamaha CDRW connected to an Adaptec
AVA-2904 (aic7xxx chipset). I have installed SuSE and on boot it sees the
SCSI card and the CDRW but not the DAT
Doing a cat of /proc/scsi/scsi shows me only the CDRW yet if i look in the
aic7xxx subdirectory in the file named 0 then I can see that there are 2
entries in this file (for SCSI IDs 2 & 3 which are the SCSI IDs of the CDRW
and DAT) but sgcheck only shows the CDRW
Please email reply to me (as well as posting) as my newserver seems to lose
a lot of messages.

That's because Windows will give a process plenty of time if it wants
it, slowing down other processes in the meanwhile. It's supposed to
have pre-emptive multitasking but in reality this doesn't seem to
work. The advantage of this is that games and other real-time
processes in Windows have less of a hard time working smoothly.
OTOH, Linux gives each running process a fair share of the CPU, so
this is why sound gets choppy sometimes.
There's a program called rtstools you can get from:
http://www.mirror.ac.uk/sites/sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/system/misc/
which allows root to set realtime priority on a process - this will
give the specified process permission to remain running for as long as
it likes; only when idle will Linux give other processes time.
On my computer, decoding mp3s using mpg123 takes about 3% CPU on
average (PII 450), so doing this is safe. If your player is busier,
then other processes' performance will suffer, and if it utilizes the
CPU 100%, nothing else will work (ie. like when Windows crashes).
Robie.

Hi JP,
I run the Lucent ORINOCO products in exactly the environment that you're
looking at. The cards are _all_ PCMCIA. To use them in a desktop system
there is a simple ISA adapter that accepts the PC card NIC. ORINOCO
support for Linux is very good (still known as Wavelan at the driver
level).
I have a Linux box in the basement with a wireless card and 100Mbit link to
the rest of my network. I set my laptop to use the Linux box as the router
and voila, wireless Internet from anywhere around my house (outside too).
I bought the NIC's for $160 a piece at techstore.com.

I suspect you can get the on-board sound working using ALSA drivers
version 0.5.6 or above (http://www.alsa-project.org). These support the
sound features in recent VIA chipsets. I'm using them on a laptop with an
MVP-4 chipset and in an ASUS Athlon board with mixed AMD/VIA chipset.
