DOes anyone have an idea how to run a DS-XG onboard chip with Linux?
It's listet in /proc/pci but there isn't any driver for it.
Best regards

Hi, (-politeness phrase added automatically-)

Does anyone know how to make midi playback work in kernel
2.3.99-pre4 on a Soundblaster AWE64?
It's an IsaPnP card, and normal sound (mp3s and system
sounds) works fine, without any additional configuration
apart from the kernel recompile.

Here's some bootup info:

isapnp: Scanning for Pnp cards...
isapnp: Calling quirk for 01:00
ISAPnP: SB audio device quirk - increasing port range
isapnp: Calling quirk for 01:02
isapnp: AWE32 quirk - adding two ports
isapnp: Card 'Creative SB AWE64 PnP'
isapnp: 1 Plug & Play card detected total

And a little further down the list:

ISAPnP reports AWE64 WaveTable at i/o 0x620
<SoundBlaster EMU8000 (RAM512k)>
Soundblaster audio driver Copyright (C) by Hannu Savolainen
1993-1996
sb: Creative SB AWE64 PnP detected
sb: ISAPnP reports 'Creative SB AWE64 PnP' at i/o 0x220, irq
5, dma 1, 5

I can't figure out what's wrong with this, or why it isn't
working at all! Can anybody *please* help me?

I have a similar problem. I'm using a Dell Latitude CPi with a Xircom
ethernet/modem combo. I've read the PCMCIA HOWTO several times and have
found no help there. I'm new to Linux on laptops.

How are you verifying that it does not connect with any serial port? I'm
using Redhat 6.1 and according to the PCMCIA howto cardmgr should record the
device information for each socket in the "stab" file; however; I cannot
find the "stab" file in any of the locations it lists. Do you know where it
is located in the Redhat dist?
(HOWTO: section 4.1)

I'm guessing, here, as I'm not familiar with your card. But if you have
identical devices at different IRQ & I/O addresses, you may have to
specify the addresses in lilo.conf. I ran into this last year with two
NE2000 PCI adapters.
Basically, "cat /proc/pci" to see where each port sits, then in
lilo.conf add an append line like:

append="ether=12,0x300,eth0 ether=15,0x340,eth1 ether=9,0x240,eth2
ether=10,0x388,eth3"

IIRC, some ethernet modules respond to the "ether" part, and some you
have to name the module.

It's IDE/ATAPI. After posting, I reread the CD-Writing Howto :) and also
found the README.ATPI for X-CD-Roast. In there, I found the reference to the
boot/lilo command you noted below. What I had been unsure of, and which
you've addressed, is whether all the modules noted on page 9 of the HowTo
needed to be loaded. It appears from your response that the answer is yes.?

>lsmod show after the insmod command? (Should show ide_scsi, scsi_mod, and

Yes, this is what was happening. So, my mounting in the drive was an already
written CD which, I assume got mounted as read only, seeing the burner as an
ide read only drive.

Overall, I have this observation. While I'm new to burning CDs in Linux (but
not "alien systems ;), I've about a year's experience with Red Hat, moving
from 5.2 up now to 6.2, and am reasonably capable at most workstation and home
network tasks. I found sorting through the documentation for this bit of
configuration to be amongst the most difficult that I've encountered. I would
suppose that for new, Intel, PCI/IDE hardware, the solution I found would be
most common and could be captured in a four sentence mini-HOWTO. What do you
think?

while doing almost anything (eg moving the mouse, accessing the hds,
transferring data with the modem) a buzz noise comes from the cpu.
i'm sure it's the cpu (or its socket) because i physically umplugged
almost everything else (even the hard drives) and the noise kept coming,
so i took away the mb from the box to hear better and it really seems
that the cpu is the problem.

i can only guess it's a problem with the interrupts, maybe a conflict,
but beside this i'm clueless... any idea?

Something like this in ~/.Xdefaults (for rxvt here) for permanent:

Also, via command line like 'rxvt -fn <whatever>'.

Thanks for the explanation. I knew it either had to be with the
CPU or RAM because my hard drive was acting the same under both
tests. (It was spinning, but no read or writes were occurring.)

I used an Amprobe digital multimeter (model AM-1280) and some
power cords I had spliced so the multimeter would be in series with
the power cord going to the computer. This model multimeter gives a 3
3/4 digit display and is calibrated to read out AC values in RMS.
Since I wasn't too particular about the precision, I set the
multimeter to measure AC current in the 10A range. (Valid from 40Hz
to 1kHz.) The resolution at this setting is 0.01A, which was good
enough for my desires. The manual says this setting has an accuracy
of "+/-1.5% of rdg +/- 5 LSD." I hate to admit this, but I don't know
what "rdg" or "LSD" stand for in this context.
I know computing power from an AC system can get complicated, so
I only gave values for current in my original post. However, from an
elementary electricity book I consulted, RMS voltage multiplied by RMS
current should give the power being used. Power factors come into
play when the AC current is being drawn out of sync with the AC
voltage, right? How far off do you suspect my values would be if I
did this? How would you suggest measuring the power used by the
computer? Thanks!

If you have a controller-based 3Com modem, 'cat /proc/pci' should return
many lines including:

      Vendor id=12b9. Device id=1008.

The rule of thumb for 3Com PCI modems:

Device id=1006 controllerless modems (FCC# 4X2USA-25314-M5-E)
Device id=1007 controllerless modems (FCC# 4X2USA-34110-M5-E)
Device id=1008 hardware modems (FCC# 4X2USA-32034-M5-E)

If you have a hardware (controller-based) PCI modem, please see the
instructions at:

       http://www.o2.net/~gromitkc/3cp5610.txt

for hints.

I would also like to get any info you have on your modem for the "big
