Debian runs on my Quadra 610! The only problem is that xf86config was
missing
from the xserver-common package, so I can't create the XF86Config file.
Does anybody have one you can mail me? Or, Does anyone have xf86config
you
can send somehow?

Please email any response as well as posting.

thanks,
Bob

here's a quote right back at you:

Question:
Can I use PC-133 memory in my AMD Athlon processor-based
                           computer?

                           Answer:
Your best choice is to check with your motherboard
manufacturer to see
if their board supports PC-133 memory. Please note, at this
time there
are no performance benefits in using PC-133 memory.

I believe this faq is out of date; it doesn't seem to acknowledge the
kx133 set...

I need help running this thing. I've got kernel 2.2.14 with added USB
SUPPORT. I've recompiled everything and it looks like no errors occure.
Modules are also present in /etc/xxxxxxx/misc/ but my mouse still doesn't
work. Does anybody have any ideas ? (Any hardware problems are unlikable
cause everything works fine in winshit98)

Is there any concrete evidence that the faster memory provides better
  performance?

I also noticed a post recommending the Gigabyte GA-7ixe at a max
  115mhz FSB.

The FIC SD11 ($140) runs at 200mhz FSB.

The new ASUS K7V ($175) also runs at 200mhz. This board is not yet on

I am looking at the Athlon system (700mhz, FIC SD11) for the initial
node component(s) of a Beowulf cluster using RedHat Linux. A cluster
consists of a number of PCs commonly connected by Fast-Ethernet run-
ning programs coded for parallel processing. The cluster will be ini-
tially used with a wide range of compilers: GCC, assembly, Lisp,
Standard ML, Fortran, and others and utilize the full spectrum of Open

Thanks, but all sound support and isapnp support is now
included in the kernel, which makes it unnecessary to load
additional modules afterwards.
I checked, and the sound modules, and the uart401 module are
not available at all.
What you are referring to with /etc/conf.modules, is kernel
2.2.14, which doesn't have isapnp support itself.
In my case, sndconfig from redhat and mandrake doesn't work
anymore, and i have to configure the kernel myself.
Maybe i should try to create the drivers as kernel-modules
and try it again. If it still won't work, maybe it's time to
bother Alan Cox with this. (If you don't agree, please try
to stop me by telling me what i'm doing wrong!)

I think what they are talking about is iso9660. You need Adaptec or
some other driver running to read and write cd-rw made with Adaptec
that's rewritable AFAIK. For instance, even Windows won't read a
cd-rw unless the Adaptec sw is installed.

What drivers did you compile in the kernel?

I have a HP682 that works fine from the server, but from windows machines,
all I get is garbage. Samba is running ok. I can see all my shares
including defined printers. I have tried many different things , but what
it looks like is the printfilter is trying to reinterpret the information,
so to me it sounds logical for the Linux spooler to not change/interpret or
re format the data, but just pass it to the printer, since the windows box
has already sent the information with the correct print driver. I have no
desire to write an interface for printing if one alredy exists. Many thanks

Machines don't recognize. You tell. In this case, repoint /dev/mouse
at /dev/ttyS[0-3] instead of /dev/psaux, and edit /etc/XF86Config's
mouse section to reflect the change in sitio and protocol. Ditto

Why have you underclocked the chip?
I have a K6-450 on a Gigabyte board and had all sorts of problems getting it
to load Windows95. I fixed that by replacing some files in the system
directory but it always ran fine with Linux.
The message you have suggests the memory access over 640k is at fault. Pcs
using the Intel standard address memory in segments. 640k is the limit of
direct addressing. Over that memory is addressed in "pages" of 16k. AFAIK
under clocking has no benefit on K6 chips. I would look further at the
hardware and double check your settings, re-clock the chip to it's rating
and start again. If you can't do that, maybe replace the board with one more
suitable for the chip.

You might have hit the 1024 cylinder restraint. Linux (fdisk) has a problem
with partitions on disks having more than 1024 cylinders. I'm not sure about
big slack but most other distros use a small /boot partition at the front of
the drive to overcome the problem.

Hey folks, I have an Exabyte 8505XL 8mm tape that under SunOS 4.1 you
use /dev/rst24 to get it to record high density w/ compression. For
Solaris it likes /dev/rmt/0cb .

Anyone have any idea what Linux ( RH 6.1 ) wants. Using /dev/st0
gets low density and no compression, yielding a whopping 1.2 gb or so
on a 160 meter tape.

I'm using the command syntax dump 0dsf 54000 26000 /dev/nst0

Ceramic capacitors with high dielectric constants - typical of bypass
caps - tend to be piezoelectric. The regular patterns of the memory
test in the POST will often show this.

Another posibility is the switching regulator for the CPU. Magnetics
also tend to make noise under load. Not only can windings flex, but the
core can, too. Look up magnetostriction and piezoelectricity to learn
about interesting physical effects that most people don't know about.

I wouldn't worry about it. The current draw of a modern processor
changes wildly, depending on the operations that it is doing. While the
computer operates at too high a frequency for you to hear it directly,
patterns of activity show up a lower frequencies. I/O often occurs in
bursts that happen at low enough frequencies for you to hear.

Hi all.

I have a PCChips 585lmr motherboard which has onboard graphics.

The chipset is a blade 3D. I am using Redhat 6.1. I have the full 8MB
assigned to graphics and my mainboard memory is 128MB 8ns PC100

I have been experiencing poor graphics performance in XWindows. I am running
the SVGA Server at 1024x768 32bits. Moving windows round the screen is very
slow and jerky. The window moving by stepping about 2 times per second.

I know that mobo's with onboard graphics aren't spectacular performers, but
I though atleast I could achieve a little more than this.

Has anyone else experienced these slow problems, or had a solution.

I have just tried running in 16 bit color, and it is not much faster at all.

Thanks for any advice in advance

Hi,

I would like to use a HP Colorado 14GB-Streamer (atapi) with Linux. I have
SuSE-Linux 6.4 which uses a patched kernel 2.2.14.

Controlling whith mt seems to work all right. With 'mt -f /dev/ht0 retension'
does something. 'mt -f /dev/ht0 rewind' works too. Even doing backups
whith cpio seems to work. But I cannot read anything from tape.

I tried 'echo Hello|dd of=/dev/ht0' (should write Hello on the tape). The
streamer do something. Doing 'dd if=/dev/ht0' gives me a I/O-Error. My
logfile tells me:
Apr 15 23:38:37 msv kernel: ide-tape: ht0: I/O error, pc = 1e, key = 5, asc = 20,
ascq =  0
Apr 15 23:38:35 msv kernel: ide-tape: ht0: I/O error, pc = 8, key = 5, asc = 2c,
ascq =  0

The streamer is a slave device on the secondary IDE-channel. Master is a
CD-ROM.

Thanks
