Hello to all,
I currently have my Red Hat Linux 6.0 configured to work
in standard VGA mode because Version 6.0 doesn't support
3dfx Vodoo3 200 AGP.
Can anyone tell me how to update my system.
I have ver 6.1 but I don't know firstly how to stop the current Xserver
that work with 640 x 480 resolution and then to launch the procedure
for updating the system.
Thanks in advance.

I am unable to find NIC drivers for Redhat 6.0, the 686 kernal, when I use a intel
Pentium Pro (200/256k) processor. I have tried 3com 3c905-tx because this seemed to be
a pretty standard card. I am wondering if the 686 kernal behaves differently than the
386 kernal ? Are there drivers available for the 686 kernal ?

Hi,
SuSE 6.4 is quite good for beginners.
(simple installation, good handbook, good support)
In some cases it´s better than Redhat or Mandrake.

I hate to tell you this, but 8M of RAM is really insufficient to run X windows, and
Star Office would be _intolerably slow_, if it ran at all. It's a bigger memory hog
than X windows.
You could run in console-mode without too much dificulty with a minimal install
and making sure that no unecessary processes are running.
There's a new HOWTO out describing using Linux on an older laptop
with only 4M. I haven't read it yet, but you may find some useful info:
http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/4mb-Laptops.html
As for development, that sort-of depends on the HD size as well, since the
extra packages needed will require a bit of room. Compiling would be quite
slow as you can imagine, but should be usable, especially for learning
purposes.

The most obvious thing to check for is proper termination, and the second
obvious thing is total cable length. These tends to be the Achilles heel of
scsi. Look at http://www.scsifaq.org/ for the general SCSI faq.
For termination, make sure both ends are terminated appropriately (using active
termination if you have an ultra version of the 2940, and using passive
termination if you have the older non-ultra 'FAST' 2940 wtihout suffix). Note,
the termination provided with scanners is typically a 25 pin connector, and is
not active termination (you need to hunt around to find an appropriate cable).
In addtion, if anywhere you go from 68 pin cables to 50 pin cables (typically
for the external cables), make sure that transition terminations the high bits
with the same termination you use on the end points.
I don't recall what the max cable lengths are, the scsi faq should give them.

Hello,

for the VIA82C686A chipset.
I have the new ASUS K7V motherboard and have been trying to get the
sound working, and frankly have tried all I know...
My BIOS is all enables re sound (I have onboard sound AC97).
My kernel is 2.2.14 and it is compiled with sound, VIA and OSS
support set to yes by menu config.
Has anyone else been successful in getting the sound device
working on a k7v motherboard???

With any Linux system there should have come an ample supply of
documentation... One of the files on my system is named
Serial-Programming-HOWTO, and covers exactly that...
If it's not on your system, try a web search for The Linux Documentation
Project.
If you want an example I can send you some code that we used when we
built a simple frame grabber as a hardware project (it was some years
ago, but should dtill be valid...)

It is not clear what is you problem, but maybe what I'm going to say can
be of some help.
Some time ago I did an installation of redhat 6.1 on a PC over some
previous partitioning and I was not able to go on until I used the plain
old "fdisk" to set up my partition. When I used fdisk it gave me a warning
message which was not displayed by disk druid and this showed me the right
direction.
The actual problem was that disk druid made a wrong choice of extended
partitions and only "fdisk" was able to warn about the problem. Even
though this is not your problem you may try this way anyway.
Good luck

It works great on my system; not a Asus motherboard, but it does

You need drivers for your *NIC*, not your processor,
386/486/586/686/etc. doesn't matter. What kind of a NIC do you have?
You may have to pop your machine open and read off the numbers, or
try "cat /proc/pci" and see if something like an Ethernet card is
listed here. You can then read the Ethernet-HOWTO and check out LhD for
the driver info (http://www.linhardware.com) -- but first you need to
know *exactly* what card you have.

See

the driver is included in most standard distribution and
kernels, "ne.o" for NE2000, of which the Ether16 is a clone.
You may want to read the Ethernet HOWTO and also check out Donald

hahaha I think its funny. I find lots of people around here like this. If
something is wrong where their computer goes does.... it can NEVER be a
hardware issue ... it is always the OS that caused the problem ... or the
application. ESPECIALLY when its with linux. Ohhhh... Linux ruined my
computer!!!! haha. I have seen things like that happen in windows where a
faulty hard drive crashed the OS. It was not because of windows. It was
because it was an old hard drive. We were using internet explorer by the
way! hehe .. "OH NO! INTERNET EXPLORER RUINED MY HARD DRIVE! IT MADE IT
CRASH!" hehe same thing.
That is just like me putting a tape into my cassette deck, and all of a
sudden one of the tired on my car blows. So I go complaining to SONY because
my car stereo caused me to slam into a wall because it popped one of my
tires!

I suppose you are using a NIC with TP interface
You need a turned|switched TP cable

Well you must be a charmed man Steve because my Voodoo 3 2000 AGP card
refused to work
under the SVGA 3.3.3 and according to all the sites I visited in an attempt
to rectify the problem, you need 3.3.5.

Try the 0.5.6 or later ALSA driver. I'm using it on two systems. One's got
an ASUS K7M motherboard, the other is a Compaq Presario notebook with a
VIA MVP4 chipset. Both use the 82c686a for sound. I've got a few more
details on my notebook web page:

I would start by checking my display settings. Is your monitor able to support
the settings it is running on?
the vertical refresh and horiz refresh settings are found in the monitor
manual. Display wont work if X sets the values too high.
open a window and run xvidtune; it will come up in the current settings, and
you can compare them to the actual capability of your monitor.
If that checks out, do ls -l /etc/X11/X to determine the display driver you
are using. You might want to try SVGA if not already using it.I think s3 cards
are a little flakey, and SVGA seems to do better with s3
good luck
