Hi all,
I have a Diamond Multimedia 56i SP internal modem, is it a winmodem?. Can I
use it
under Linux?. In Windows it is under COM3, using IRQ10 and I/O address:
3E8-3EF. If it works with Linux, how can I configure it?.
Thanks in advance.

I have seen this problem often.
Here is what works for me:
Go in to printool and delete the printer. If you have more than one
printer, delete them all. Then go into /var/spool/lpd and del all the
files and diretories under it Then recreate in printtool . Try printing
a test page. It should work and if not reload lpr and then you should
be ok unless something else is going on. BTW, your lexmark should work
great with RH and it's LPR. We have 4 of them and they have worked great
and as advertised. The only problem I have found is if you use Windows
2000 as it uses a Microsoft proprietary LPR that doens't seem
compatiable with anything but thats about on par with course with them
:)
Good Luck, Fletch

I just bought a Linksys Eatherfast router (with 4 10/100
switched ports built-in) for $160.00US. It replaced my old
pentium /Linux router box. (running out of room and too much
noise for my SOHO.) Very small size. It beats the hell out of
having another box occupying space. (I have 5 boxes running,
not counting the router box. I piggy bagged another hub behind
it, and have seperate security set up on each box; running
Solaris, FreeBSD and Linux.)
It seems to work quite nicely.

for Linux in SMP mode, ATA66 supports, etc.
for the Abit BP6 SMP mobo.

Subject: xcdRoast making CDs which are not readable by Windows.

Hi,
I have Redhat 6.2 on AMD Athlon machine, HP 8250i CD-RW 4x4x24 IDE
drive.
I am using xcdroast to create DataCD. The CDs which are written by
X-CD-Roast are read by only X-CD-Roast. My WIndows machine cannot read
the CD. Even my Linux machine says wrong FS when I try to mount this CD.
I am not sure what's going wrong. I have tried RockRidge extensions,
RockRidge+Joilet. I have used X-CDRoast 0.98alpha5 and X-CDRoast 0.96e.
Both gave me this problem.
Any help will be good,
Thanks in advance,

hi there: just received an ensoniq audio pci I ordered from buy.com
On the package it says ES1371 but on the board itself there is no es1371
chip - saw one on a picture of an ensoniq audio pci card someone was

talks only about creative ct4811. Is this the same chip and should it work

Buy a generic external serial modem. For example, the Diamond
SupraExpress 56e Pro works fine. Doubtless many others do, too.
Probably some USB modems work, but they'll be harder to set up at the
moment.

If it's a real Ensoniq AudioPCI, then it should have one big chip on it
that has the Ensoniq logo, underneath ES1370, underneath that QDIOPCI,
and then some more serial number info and junk. Creative Labs put out an
AudioPCI board that used the ES1371 ... I don't know what the ct4811 is
.... sounds to me like you didn't get an AudioPCI board.

This sounds reasonable enough. An ISA-only 486 might be kinda slow, but a
VLB or (better yet) PCI 486 should work fairly well with a modem and a NIC
or with two NICs to provide Internet access to an entire LAN.

I guess I would first ask that you tell me what happens when you run the
sndconfig program. If you really have a Sound Blaster it should find it
here and play a sample sound. Then it will configure the correct sound
driver on startup. What happens when you run this program?

Hi. If you have a newer machine(like, just about any
Pentium class machine) then you probably have a serial
port with hw buffering. If so, then I've had very good
luck with USR Sportster external V90 fax/modems. I've
gotten them working in OS/2 Warp, Windows9x and NT and
just about every major kernel version of Linux since
around 1.3x something. All you have to do is configure
the serial port, at least AFA data goes. Sending faxes
is another matter. In Linux, you pretty much just set
up your serial port and the modem takes care of itself.
Read the Serial howto to make sure you take advantage of
the hw buffering, but I imagine newer dist. do this pretty
much automatically.
Also you might find for internet, setting up a caching-only
name server helps with performance a bit.
Good luck. :)

I've got a Diamond supra express 56e -- works great. :) Verrrry fast too. I
can get download rates over 5kbps. No configuration nessesary either, just
plug it in. Hope this 'll help with your modem buying decision.
