Hello,

I am having a problem with cdrecord. I have created an audio CD
that worked properly (on the same system before I started having this
problem. I don't know what changed), but now I'm getting the following
error every time I try to write anything (either writing data, audio or
just blanking a CDRW):

I was hoping that maybe someone could tell me what that error means?
I'm
using a DELL Inspiron 7500 laptop computer with Redhat Linux v6.2.
Like I mentioned earlier, it did work for me a couple times before.
Same system - I don't know what changed. Perhaps it's a
hardware problem?

I've used about 4 CDRs and two different CDRWs and get the same results.

Thanks for your input.

Don Myroon

Date: Tue, 13 Jun 2000 21:18:44 +0200

Hi!

We have a compaq server (Proliant 1500) running under Linux here.
We have a raid5 controlled by a compaq smart.

If one disk fails, the server looses its security (raid5), so I
want to be informed if this happens. How can I achieve this? Is
there a program which can notify root via an email if one disk
fails? Do I have to use the log, and is this error logged?

Thank you, CU, Lars.

(If it is ok for you, please send a copy of your answer to my email-
address: [EMAIL PROTECTED] - I'll get it at university then. Thank you!)

I'm guessing you were expecting that the line "boot=/dev/hdb1" would
boot your new kernel? That points to the "Master Boot Record", and if
you allowed the boot process to continue without typing "new" at the
lilo prompt, then you were booting your old kernel, determined by the
line "default=linux". Which would explain everything. Normally the boot
line would be "boot=/dev/hda", or apparently /dev/hdb in your case?

I'll assume this was from booting the default "linux" rather than the
"new" kernel image. From that last line, it looks to me like ide-cd is
still in the kernel, which is expected. And ide-cd is grabbing the CDRW
at boot, which is also expected from the lilo.conf you have. What I have
done on my system is have the two kernel entries set up so if I boot the
original kernel (which contains ide-cd) I tell it not to attach the
ide-cd driver. While if I boot the new kernel, where I (like you) did
not compile in ide-cd, that line is not necessary. So you might want to
add the "append" line to the "linux" entry:

image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.12-20
        label=linux
        initrd=/boot/initrd-2.2.12-20.img
        read-only
        root=/dev/hdb1
        append="hdc=ide-scsi"

And then be sure to rerun "/sbin/lilo".

And when you do boot the "linux" kernel, I would go for the easy entry
in /etc/conf.modules. Try just the single line:

alias scsi_hostadapter ide-scsi

Now reboot, and things will likely work regardless of which kernel you
select. And in fact, you should be able to read and write the CDRW just
fine booting either way. The only difference I have found is that when
booting the original kernel, the CDROM automounter won't work (but
manual mounting still works fine). For automounting, and I think also
for playing audio CDs, you will need to change the /dev/cdrom link to
point to /dev/scd0.

I have a question: are you compiling the tulip.c that's including with
your Linksys pci NIC? Or are you using the already compiled from the
kernel tulip driver? The tulip driver covers a wide range of nics (and
most of them don't work with it anyways). It's just a question. =)

According to the Linux hardware HOWTO, section 9, supported SCSI
controllers:

NCR chips 53C7x0 (the 53C710 is only supported in PCI variant)

If the 3430 is just an MCA x86 PC then it should work with any flavour of
Linux. Unless you have the 53C710 on a PCI card, though, you may be SOL
for using that SCSI controller.

Ok. There's actually a great deal of MCA support under Linux. I've only
just come across this, but there are a few mailing lists devoted to the
topic. They appear to have a fair number of posts re NCR boxen, too. I'm
sure someone there can shed some light on the subject...

I would recomend against the LinkSys 5 port hub. Every few days, the hub
freezes up and I have to power cycle it. The Linksys 5 port switch and two
3com 8 port OfficeConnect hubs that plug into the switch seem to work
flawlessly (I have the 2 OfficeConnects, an older 10baseT netgear hub and the
LinkSys hub all plugged into the LinkSys switch). However, the OfficeConnect
hubs were not cheap, at least when I bought them. I also had bad luck with a
SOHOware hub, whose fan was incredibly noisy.

RH 6.2 Kernel for NCR MCA SCSI Systems available

I just posted a new RedHat 6.2 Installation kernel and config files for
those interested in NCR Microchannel (uniprocessor)systems using NCR
53c94/53c710 or BusLogic BT646 SCSI host adapters. The kernel contains
minimal networking using some 3Com and SMC MCA adapters. The drivers are
in zipped form found at
ftp.dgmicro.com/incoming/RH-62-MCA-53c94-MCA-53c710. Sorry about the long
name but I didn't want this kernel confused with the non-microchannel NCR
53c710 adapter. This was compiled for i386 so even the older 386 machines
may still have some life. Good Luck!

Here's a bit from the readme.txt included in the ZIP file:

RedHat 6.2 Microchannel support for NCR/Buslogic SCSI Adapters

This kernel contains Microchannel SCSI support for the following adapters:
NCR 53c94, NCR 53c710, and Buslogic BT646 controllers.

It should be doable either way. The Windowses I've used seem to
prefer sitting on the first drive, so you should probably install
Win2000 there. Linux should be happy on the second drive. Also in my
experience Windowses like to clean out the master boot record (where
LILO lives) each time they're installed, so if you install Linux first
you should make sure you have a Linux boot floppy handy before
installing Windows, so you can boot to linux afterwards and re-run the
lilo installer. (Of course, you should have a boot floppy in any
event.)

On my system, I installed Windows on the first drive and got it all
set up and happy before installing Linux on the second drive and
setting up LILO to boot both OSes. The RedHat installation scripts
should set up LILO pretty easily for you.

I believe that would be an analog monitor, which won't work with the

After this, I must reboot and try again. Does anyone know of/

Yes. I can try myself but before I would to know the experience with a

I'm getting a pc tomorrow and I'm going to need to install somekind of
ethernet card in it... nothing special just for @home connection. I'm
going to run slack (probably v7 or the newest stable version), specs are
pII 333mhz, 128mbRAM, pci slots open... I had trouble with the crap card
@home gave me for windows when they came in linux in this computer (in
fact I ended up giving up) so i'm looking for something that's linux
compatible with drivers and support and also being able to be easily
installed in win98 second edition... i know there are a ton of 3com's
that can do this, but anything cheaper would be really nice... any
success stories? thanks a lot
