If you're going external, I would strongly suggest going SCSI. Yes, you
have to buy a controller, but you don't need a top-end Ultra160 one
or anything. Buy.com has the Adaptec 2906 for $50, and I'm sure you
could find Tekrams cheaper somewhere else.
The problem is that writing a CD is very time sensitive. I wouldn't
trust parallel, and USB support at this point is too experimental for my
tastes. My $0.02.

Subject: High resolution KVM switch?
Date: Thu, 15 Jun 2000 16:59:04 GMT
Greetings,
I'm looking for a high-quality KVM switch which can handle high monitor
resolutions without degrading the image. I usually run at 1600x1200 @
85Hz, which is beyond the range of all of the units I've found so far.
Many claim to do 1600x1200, but it's usually at a much slower refresh
rate.
If anyone knows of a KVM switch that can run that fast and maintain a
quality image, please let me know.
Thanks,
Brian.

Hi there,
I will tell my modem story. Windows 98 reported it as COM4 and I spent about
2 hours before I found trhat in Linux it was /dev/ttyS2 (COM3). My conclusion
was that Linux assign next available /devttyS?? and documentation or
Windows98 mislead people. Try do not disable port in BIOS and check
through setserial which /dev/ttyS?? (port) will be taken by your modem.
in bash
for tty in 3 4 5 6
do
setserial "your parameters here" /dev/ttyS$tty
setserial -g /dev/ttyS$tty
done
something like that (can not check as on Solaris system at the moment)

My friend sent me this message on June 13, 2000 and I
thought I would post it here:
I'm running RedHat 6.0 on a HP Vectra XU PPro200 at home.
Arggghhh! Upgraded to RH 6.2, and this is what I get:
Error: only one processor found.
enabling symmetric IO mode.......done.
Enabling IO-APIC IRQ's
...changing IO-APIC physical ID to 16
Kernel panic: could not set ID
In swapper task-not syncing
And then it just hangs there. Even went back and did a new
install of 6.2 and get the same. This is on HP Vecta XU
PPro200 which has dual processor motherboard but only one
CPU.
Dam thing was running good with 6.0 before this shit. I
registered on RH support site but have no answer yet and I
leave
for Detroit today so I ain't gonna fuck with it before
Friday or Saturday at the earliest, but any ideas?
Thanks,

I just got my Diamond MM boards. The chip in this card is the Broadcom
chip! I couldn't get the pcnethme.o module to load properly under RH 6.2.
Since DiamondMM mentiones the AMD Chip in some of their online
documentation and since the AMD site indicates that the driver supports
10M:
http://www.amd.com/products/npd/software/pcnet_home/linuxreadmetxt.html
I presumed that DiamondMM was using the AMD chip in their 10M boards.
Just keep digging to find a Broadcom driver.

It sounds to me like a power supply problem. I live out at a tail end
of the grid with verry dirty power so my supplys temd to go belly up
after about 24 months of 24/7 usage even with a ups. Usually the first
simptom is a crash during any type of disk format along with verry
random and unrepeatable software errors. This is especially true if you
are useing a noname powersupply <300W. I've had good results with
cahnging out the powersupply as soon as I buy a box, great source of
extra cooling fans <G>. I recomend Antec PS's.
