a way to reset the keyboard port and/or getty short or rebooting?

I only use SCSI. That said: for CDROMs, I've gotten good mileage from
Toshiba over the years; for CD-R, Teac has given me no problems
whatsoever.

OK, I've spent... 8 hours on this now. Non-stop.
How do I get my USB mouse working in 2.4.0test1? Or in ANY kernel, ever,
anywhere?!?!
I compiled with USB HID support, USB UHCI support, USB support, USB mouse
support, and all that. I am fairly confident that, after 7 times, I have the
kernel compiled correctly for USB. I modprobed usbmouse, usbcore and
usb-uhci. All are loaded.
When I boot X, it errors me with:
"/dev/usbmouse: No such device"
Same when I cat /dev/usbmouse
I did mknod /dev/usbmouse c 10 32
And mknod /dev/usbmouse c 180 16
I tried putting it in /dev/usb/usbmouse.
I tried usbmouse0.
What is it that's missing? Why does it say no such device?! I deleted
/dev/mouse, too (forgot why), so I can't even use my PS/2 mouse anymore.
Something with this alias char-major-*-* business? Something I'm not
loading?
Using Debian 2.3. Help *GREATLY* appreciated. I'm still pretty new, but I'm
a fast learner.
Using XFree 4.0. Nvidia drivers. But I don't think it has anything to do
with X because it can't find the device when I cat either.
When I do more /proc/interrupts and click my mouse a bit, the number next to
usb-uhci increases. So the mouse is being recognized by something, at least.
This No Such Device thing really has me stumped.
TIA,
-Dolgan

If you want a distro that supports USB out of the box, try Mandrake.
To my knowledge, USB on any other distribution will require you to
manually rebuild your kernel: a non-trivial task.

I've got a CNet PCI Network adapter (Realtek), which usually runs with
the ne2k-pci module.
Now I want to set the card to full duplex mode, so as the module,
supplied with SuSE 6.4 doesn't support full-duplex I downloaded the
newest version from
http://www.scyld.com/network/ne2k-pci.html
>> ("ne2k-pci.c:v1.01 4/15/2000 D. Becker/P. Gortmaker";)
which should partially support FD (Building the kernel with the original
module always succeeded!)
I replaced the modules and recompiles the kernel, but when building the
modules, it gave me an error.
I tried the newest (2.2.16) kernel, which contains and older version as
mentioned above, which _doesn't_ sopport FD. ;...-(((
I also replaced the modules, and it gave me the same error.
Is ther anyone out there, who can tell me how to get this working???
I'm sorry I don't give you the error message, if it's needed, please
tell me...

Subject: ssh/rsh

I need a solution to execute scripts or copy files automaticly to all
unix hosts (sun, sgi, linux,...) in different subnets with
root-privileges, for example for distributing new root passwords.
Until now, I use a script which is run as root from out nis-master and
which executes the wanted program via (again over nfs from the
nis-master) rsh on the remote hosts.
This is very slow, as there are several NT-Workstations, which don't
answer on the request, and I get a timeout after ~30 sec. I figured out,
that ssh2 recognizes this much faster, I get a connection refused after
1-2 sec.
1. Is there a way to tell rsh the time for trying to get the connection,
until it aborts?
2. I want to use encrypted connections using ssh, because rsh
connections will be disabled soon.
Is there a way to use ssh in the same way as rsh, where f.e. the
connections from the nis-master are allowed to all hosts (as root)
3. Is there a way to pass ssh(2) the right password automatically
(perhaps already encrypted), so that I don't allow even the nis-master
to connect as root to the other hosts without a given password???
4. Any other hints or sollution for the problem?????
Thanks in advance...

Here is my 2 cents. It took me a long time to get this working:
6/23/00
Problem:
When converting from RedHat 5.2 to RH 6.2, my HP-8200 IDE cdrom burner
stopped working.
Software:
RedHat 5.2 -> 6.2, cdrecord and xcdroast
Hardware:
Pentium III class machine
ide: hda hdb
scsi: adptech board with scsi cdrom and sda
Background:
I couldnt mount the HP8200 cdrom on the scsi bus. It is an ide
device, and the ide-to-scsi driver (ide-scsi) would not load.
Finally by recompiling the kernel it did load, however then the other
Adaptec scsi device driver module for /dev/sda would not load (aic7xxx.o).
Forcing this driver to be in the kernel (rather than as a module) fixed the
problem.
With the RH5.2 kernel there was a parameter that would control the
priority of the ide-scsi driver (relative to /dev/hdc) for the HP8200.
This parameter was used in /etc/lilo.conf "hdc=ide-scsi." It is not
used by the RH6.2 OS. Instead it uses /etc/sysconfig/hwconf
file to control the setup, and /etc/conf.modules.
I need to force aic7xxx.o into the os rather than make it a module.
During boot, os is getting confused and thinks it is seeing an old
version of this adaptec driver. Dont know why.
edit .config (make xconfig)
copy .config -> /boot/config.aic7xxx
make dep, clean, bzImage
cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage -> /boot/bzImage-2.2-aic7xxx
fix lilo.conf, run lilo
make modules, modules_install
save and exit this file and reboot
NOTE: The following parameters worked with the RH6.2 kernel (2.2.14-5.0)
Here is one way to proceed:
delete hwconf, and recompile the kernel with the following settings:
$diff /usr/src/linux/.config /usr/src/linux/configs/kernel-2.2.14-i686.config
95c91
< CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDECD=m
---
> CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDECD=y
98c94
< CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDESCSI=y
---
> CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDESCSI=m
273c233
< CONFIG_SCSI_AIC7XXX=y
---
> CONFIG_SCSI_AIC7XXX=m
I am not sure which (or if both) of the first two is essential. The
third parameter is based on the scsi card I have, and "y" was essential to
get the driver to load.
The following is the output from cdrecord -scanbus using the modified
2.2.14 kernel:

Unless you have some *really special* reason to enable full-duplex, it
probably
won't bring any performance benefit and can cause problems on some networks.
For performance, a non-NE2000-based NIC is probably the first thing you
would
benefit from.

Your version of X is more important than kernel version for full
graphics card support. See the XFree86 site, as well as LhD, for detailed
information on the *specific* card(s) you are considering. There are so many
that are compatible nowadays that it is very hard to answer your question
in general. It all depends on how much you want to spend, what features you
need/want, etc.

I've installed RedHat 6.1, and all went well untill the modem. My windows
2000 says the modem is at irq 7 and at io port 0x0178-0x17f.
On the linux, i've tried to set it up with setserial with out any success.
# setserial /dev/ttyS2 irq 7 port 0x0178
# setserial /dev/ttyS2 auto_irq autoconfig
both failed.
Any hint ? Any help ? What am I missing ?
Any help would be apreciatted.
