Are you sure /dev/hdc6 is the correct partition? Run 'cfdisk

I think most distro allow you to install them in text mode.
Go ahead and install the Linux first including GNOME, KDE, both or
whatever you want to run. Just don't configure your video card yet.
If you can get online in terminal mode, download XFree packages then
do
the upgrade. What I did was printing out the instruction first. Then,
I
download all the packages to a zip disk. After installing a new
system,
I got the zip drive working first and install them from the zip
drive.
I don't know what distro you are using but that should not matter. I
think there are some bugs in XFree 3.3.6 (with ATI 128). However, I
can't remember where to get the patch... Well, I am still using 3.3.5
so
I did not pay too much attention to that.
Hope this helps.

Ok, my Sony SDT-9000 SCSI DDS-3 4-mm DAT drive works with RedHat 6.2.
Unfortunately, I discovered that it defaults to DDS density:
# mt -f /dev/st0 status
SCSI 2 tape drive:
File number=0, block number=0, partition=0.
Tape block size 512 bytes. Density code 0x13 (DDS (61000 bpi)).
Soft error count since last status=0
General status bits on (41010000):
BOT ONLINE IM_REP_EN
It reads tapes I've written in the past on DDS drives, but not tapes
I've written on DDS-2 drives. So, I try to set it do DDS-3 density:
# mt -f /dev/st0 setdensity 0x25
/dev/st0: Input/output error
Is there a SCSI Tape HOWTO I can't find? How do I configure the st
driver to write DDS-3 tapes and read DDS-2 tapes?

Please set your wordwrap to something less than 80 col if possible.
Just went through this myself. It was fixed in pcmcia-cs-3.1.10.
You
might as well update to pcmcia-cs-3.1.16 (or latest version), but
until
then you could try using setserial to set the irq to zero and then
back to
the irq that cardmgr in /var/log/messages or 'cardctl config' says it
is.
If that fails, just set it to irq 0 w/setserial and it will work,
though,
somewhat slower.
Or add this to /etc/rc.d/rc.local until you update pcmcia-cs:
SERIAL=`/sbin/cardctl ident | grep serial`
if [ -n "$SERIAL" ]; then
SETMODEM=`/bin/setserial -G /dev/ttyS1`
echo "Modem settings $SETMODEM"
/bin/setserial /dev/ttyS1 irq 0
echo "Tmp setting `/bin/setserial -bg /dev/ttyS1`"
/bin/setserial $SETMODEM
echo "Final modem setting `/bin/setserial -bg /dev/ttyS1`"
fi
sleep 3
/dev/ttyS1 typically uses irq 3, but pcmcia-cs assigns it any irq
that is
unused unless it is excluded in /etc/pcmcia/config.opts. You might
try
commenting out "exclude irq 3" if there and /cat/proc/interrupts does
not
show anything using it.

Hi guys, I have more information on the problem with kernel

After reading up on initrd and the 'mkinitrd' command I have
learned that if the SCSI adaptor is changed the '/etc/conf.modules'
needs to be edited. After adding 'alias scsi_hostadaptor advansys'
and removing the aic7xxx one, I run mkinitrd to create a new
"/boot/initrd2.2.16-3.img". I can boot and load my disks
on the new SCSI card. Great...!
The only problem is that it is only possible to have ONE driver
set up like this. A bit akward when movieg back and forth between
the 2 cards. (Testing) This has been solved by using 2 boot
disks that I swap between depending on what card is installed.
Hope this helps others that may be in a similar situation.
I simply did not know that one needs to make a new initrd.img
file when changing the card.

Yes, I'm an idiot.
The problem was that the monitor would become solid white when
starting X. The solution was that I needed a config file for a
1024x768 monitor, which I found at
<http://home.flash.net/~bdropps/xconfig.htm>.
A different problem is that the mouse is buggy. The fella at the
site
above (Tim Dropps) informed me that Compaq has a patch for the BIOS
which takes care of this problem. Unfortunately, it's a .exe and the
first thing I did was get rid of my Windows crap. Any suggestions?
Also, I'm having trouble with my soundcard, but that's not really an
X thing. Nonetheless, if you've read this far, maybe I can get you
to
read the off-topic remainder. My machine tells me that I have an
8-bit SBPro (8bit? Cheapskates!). I compiled the relevant modules
(sb, soundcore, etc) and they load apparently. When I cat a sound to
the speaker, the shell pauses for roughly the length of the sound,
but
I hear nothing (I've tried the volume buttons on this thing, to no
effect). Any ideas? (Tim suggested OSS, and I'm looking into that
solution, but a free solution would kick butt.)
(Because of that last paragraph, I've decided to crosspost this
message to c.o.l.hardware. I suppose that responses should go into
whatever newsgroup is appropriate.)
Please send a courtesy copy with any replies, so that I may fix these
problems sooner. I will post the solutions to these problems in the
appropriate groups.

The ES1371 has two output channels, dsp0 and dsp1 AFAICT, but for
some
reason only dsp0 gets used unless you explicitly configure one (or
more) sound-emitting programs to use the other one. DOn't know for
sure
what's up with that.
The Enlightenment sound daemon (esd) can mix several audio sources in
software, allowing you to stack sounds. Many programs including xmms
can
make use of esd--have you tried that?

Did you include the '-t vfat' as part of the mount command? Mine
works
just fine, but you have to tell it what filesystem is on the disk.
ISTR you also have to have one of the IDE-floppy options turned on
when
you compile the kernel.

Sorry to follow up to my own post, but the sound is now working. I
didn't learn anything. What wasn't working before is working now.
In case anyone else has this card and wants the modprobe line, here's
what worked for me.
/sbin/modprobe sb io=0x220 irq=5 dma=1 mpu_io=0x330

I just went to the XFree web site...
Supported ATI card include Rage 128. However, I think Pro is
different.
I might be wrong.
http://www.xfree86.org/3.3.6/README3.html#3
However, check the following web site if you haven't done so. They
provide detial information. I did not have much trouble following the
instructions and configuring the card. Beginner's luck?

Why do you need Mech 64? ATI Xpert 2000 (AGP) use 128 chip set.
Good luck.
Alex.

You need a patched kernel. Maybe SuSE or Mandrake, or patch it
yourself.
See www.linux-ide.org.
