g'day
i recently installed redhat 6.0 on an aptiva and have got a weird problem -
when i move the mouse in x-windows env, the monitor makes a "buzzing" sound
(there is no sound when i don't move the mouse). There is also no buzz if i
drag it over a blank desktop - only when the cursor changes from an x to an
arrow. i have a sis6205 videocard(2mb) and an ibm g70 monitor. the problem
does not appear when running win95 on the same system, even in the same
vidmode. ibm and sis have been exceptionally unhelpful. does anyone have
any ideas?
thanks in advance,

Hello
I try to install Linux (Redhat 6.2) on three panel PC Advantech
PPC-102T. It doesn't work very well.
Sometime it freeze during install, sometime the install was good.
But after install, when I use it (try to work with the Elotouch input
for X) it freeze !
It is a random process, it can freeze during boot sequence or when I
invoke ls or vi or when I work under XWindow (simple window manager :
fvwm). Sometimes, I got som kernel panics !
I suspect a hardware problem (on 3 PC ?) so I try to use other SIMM
memory but without success.
Does anyone have some experience on this kind of problems ?
Thanks

Wow, that all sounds a bit messy! Ive no idea what could be causing that.
Ive installed Corel Linux about 20 times (!) and Ive never seen that. Im not
gonna bring you through stuff like check if your keyboard is plugged in
properly etc. cause I know you're a beginner, not an idiot! It could be some
sort of hardware conflict but thats a complete guess. My advice is go out
and get a copy of Redhat. The installation program may be a bit more
complicated than Corels 3-step approach but its a solid distro. The lack of
input in Corel's installation means you dont even get to choose a mouse or a
keyoard! Try it and see. Otherwise, see if you can get another copy of the
Corel cd or try a different keyboard, just to make sure.
Hope this helps,
Frog

I don't know about your V3 prob but you can download the Zoot .iso
(RH6.2) from any redhat mirror. Check redhat.com for a mirror close to
you. Just burn the iso file with your burn app adn the finished cd will
boot just peachy.

AFAIK K6 series don't do SMP. Neither do the new FCPGA Celerons. The *old*
PPGA Celerons do. A frequently used setup is the Abit BP6 mobo with two
Celeron processors. Prize is compareble to the Asus P3B-F mobo here in the
Netherlands. Although there will be lots of satisfied users of the above
setup, I should warn you that a friend of mine had two BP6's die in two
different systems... So personally I doubt the quality of these Abit mobos.
If you want to spend more money you could buy a more expensive Asus dual
processor mobo.

I am having some trouble getting my CD writer to go. I'm a relative newbie
so have some patience.
I'm running kernel version 2.2.13-4 from a Mandrake 6.5 distribution.
The device is a brand new HP CD-writer plus ( not sure exactly which model )
connected in the hdd position.
I've compiled the kernel to give the following support:
Sect. Description
????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
BLOCK Enhanced IDE/MFM/RLL... Y
BLOCK IDE/ATAPI CDROM ide?cd M
BLOCK SCSI emulation support ide?scsi M
BLOCK Loopback device loop M
SCSI SCSI support scsi_mod Y
SCSI SCSI CD?ROM support sr_mod Y
SCSI Enable vendor?specific Y
SCSI SCSI generic support sg Y
FS ISO 9660 CDROM filesystem iso9660 Y
FS Microsoft Joliet cdrom... joliet Y
The kernel build is producing cdrom.o rather than ide-cd.o when
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDECD is defined and seems to be linking this in.
I've tried various combinations of modifications of lilo.conf and
conf.modules but haven't managed to get anything other than 'Cannot open
SCSI driver' from cdrecord -scanbus.
At this point I'm a bit lost as to what I'm missing here.

I have an older hp drive working successfully under RedHat 6.2.
It's attached as hdd, and I have the line
append="hdd=ide-scsi"
in the linux section of my /etc/lilo.conf. As I understand it, that
tells
the ide-scsi module when loaded to take over hdd and make it a scsi
device.
Before use, I need to execute
insmod ide-scsi
(ought to be in the startup scripts somewhere, but I've not got round to
that). cdrecord then works fine.
I didn't need to recompile the RedHat-supplied kernel to get it working:
the options you give look about right to me. I get a "cannot open SCSI
driver" if I "rmmod ide-scsi", so maybe you need to check that the
module is inserted OK (insmod as above).

I have no experience with anything newer that RH 6.0, so forgive my
ignorance, but might you not have to recompile the kernel to include
support for the 3C509, either built-in or as a module? I don't know
what set of "stock" modules get installed under Mandrake. If the
3C509 support isn't present in a module or built-in, then the kernel
won't find it under boot. Do a "dmesg | more" command to see if it
detected it at boot. If not, then a kernel rebuild might be in order.

I'd recommend getting rid of IDE CDROM support altogether. Running
emulation, you don't need it anyway, and it causes conflicts with
the emulation finding the CD burner to begin with.
Other than that, all looks okay.

This is another way to make it work. This makes the IDE CD driver
ignore your burner so that the emulation can find it.

Again, it's more trouble to do it this way; just include all
the SCSI stuff (emulation, CD driver, generic, et cetera) in
the kernel and get rid of the IDE CD part altogether. You'll
be able to read CDs using /dev/scd0 and write them with
cdrecord.

Heya Neven,
I have an abit BP6 (http://www.abit.com.tw/english/product/bp6.htm) with
two 400MHz cellery's clocked to 466MHz, 256MB, two 17GB drives, an ide
cdrom and a scsi burner.
I have _never_ had any problems with this board at all even though I did
all kinds of wierd stuff with it. Linux (RH6.2 and 6) run like a charm
also SlackWare 7.
I don't know how long the celerons will remain available but at least
they won't cost all that much.

I worked with a 3C509B a few months ago when I set up my LAN with Linux. One
necessity is to make sure that pnpdump can see the card. (PNP on earlier
versions of Redhat would only look at the PCI bus -- not at the ISA bus until
you told it to...) To do this, do the following command:
pnpdump > /etc/isapnp.conf
This isapnp.conf is looked for on bootup. If it is present, then the kernel
will try to configure the devices listed in there. When you edit the
isapnp.conf file, to enable a specific device, uncomment out the "ACT = Y"
line (or it looks something like that). Once you reboot, the startup message
will say that the kernel has found a board with serial xx xx xx xx xx xx and
it should automatically load the 3c509 module into the kernel.
>From there, you configure it the same way with any other network card in Linux
(easiest way is 'netcfg')...

The kernel was never the problem. The newest versions of Lilo _do_
support this -- as long as the BIOS can handle things. Not sure what

Subject: Sound VIBRA16 problem with CDs
Date: Wed, 12 Jul 2000 13:09:10 +0100
Hi,
I wonder if perhaps there's anyone out there who would be willing to
advise me on the following problem. I've been trying to configure sound,
and got to the stage when I'm able to play *.wav files, but unable to play
audio CDs. Attempting to play CDs results in intermittent crackling
sounds only through speakers, whilst at the same time one can listen to
the music using headphones plugged directly into the CD-ROM. This CD-ROM
works perfectly well under Win95 on the same box. Here are some details:
H/W:
VIBRA16 chip on P6-LX-A motherboard (from ECS)
CRD-8240B ATAPI CD-ROM
OS:
Slackware 7.0 (kernel 2.2.13)
I've read and re-read TFMs (ie. HOWTOs, Mini-HOWTOs,
/usr/src/linux/Documentation), tried a bit web searching, fiddled with
BIOS, kernel, modules, isapnp all to no avail.
A few details of the most recent configuration:
BIOS: PnP OS - YES
Kernel: PnP support - NO
Sound support - M (including soundblaster)
Resources as in isapnp.conf: irq=5 dma=1 & 3 io=0x220, 0x330 & 0x388. These
resources were taken from Win95 where they work perfectly well on the same
box. Relevant modules loaded are: soundcore, sound, uart401, sb, ocl3.
During booting a message saying that Audio, followed by list of resources
as in isapnp.conf, is Enabled OK.
lsmod shows the above modules, /proc/interrupts & /proc/ioports have the
right stuff. However /proc/dma shows dma 1 allocated to soundblaster, and
no sign of dma 3 allocation.
cat /dev/sndstat shows blank space in Installed drivers: and Card
configuration:.
Audio devices:
0: Sound Blaster 16 (4.16)
Synth devices:
0: Yamaha OPL3
Midi devices:
0: Sound Blaster 16
Timers:
0: System clock
Mixers:
0: Sound Blaster
First I've tried KDE CD Player, then workman (under KDE), and finally
installed dcd-0.80. Using either of the above gives the same result ie
crackling noises. Fiddling with mixer and volume doesn't help, changing
only volume but not the quality. On the other hand KDE Midi Player and
KDE Control Centre play WAV files without any problems.
Here is some stuff I picked from dmesg after failed attempts to play CDs:
hdd: command error: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
hdd: command error: error=0x54
end_request: I/O error, dev 16:40 (hdd), sector 0
ATAPI device hdd:
Error: Illegal request -- (Sense key=0x05)
Illegal mode for this track or incompatible medium -- ( asc=0x64,
ascq=0x00)
The above repeats itself for sectors 2, 4 and 6.
I've also tried setting dma to 1 & 5.
This results in /proc/dma showing both 1 & 5 allocated to soundblaster.
However dmesg shows:
Soundblaster audio drive <snip>
SB 4.16 detected O.K. (220)
SB16 - Bad or missing 16 bit DMA channel.
This CD-ROM works O.K. for data CDs under linux. I've also tried
compliling kernel with PnP Support Yes, Sound Support Yes ( a few
cmbinations), setting PnP OS in BIOS to both Y and N, a few different
resource settings in isapnp. I've also tried using parallel port HP7200e
CD-RW to play CDs without any success. It seems like I've run out of
sensible ideas for the time being. Has anyone come across and solved a
similar problem?
Any advice will be appreciated.
Many thanks in advance

Good morning -
I am running Mandrake 7.1 and can't seem to get my HP 930C printer
working. Using printtool I try and add the printer, but it is not
listed. So I use "HP 550C (UP)" on the assumption that it will
recognize it. But when it comes time for a test page, nothing happens.
While messing around with the settings (I am newbie and not sure where
to check) I sometimes see a messager "Waiting to come online" which
makes me wonder if the port is being seen.
I looked at http://www.linuxprinting.org/ and they say the printer works
perfectly. Unfortunately, I have no idea how to see if I have the needed
driver or not.
Interestingly, when I do lptest > lp0 (or something like that) nothing
happens either.
I would greatly appreciate any help or advice you can offer.
Thanks for your help.

lilo 21.4.3 IIRC is the latest lilo that wil support booting from beyond
1024th cylinder, but check freshmeat.net on that. As far as I know this
version of lilo is not yet included in any of the distros, so you have
to setup a system booting from floppy first, and then upgrade lilo.

Sounds to me like your soundcard is sharing an interrupt with the mouse.
Not sure if that's easy to fix though, depends on your hardware, if you
can manually assign interrupts to devices, it wont be that difficult to
resolve.
Otherwise, I don't know
