Well, after I changed tape drives, it seemed to get super-picky about
its terms. Bear in mind you have to set that thing up either with dip
switches or the builtin bios extension you get when you hit a ctrl-a at
the right point in the bootup. I finally decided I had had enough of
picky, and threw money in the form of an Advansys 930-something-or-other
at an empty pci slot. Zero problems with it so far.

Cheers, Gene

Subject: confusion about cd-rw setup and use
Date: Thu, 13 Jul 2000 23:50:57 -0600

Hello all,

I've read thru the cd-writing howto at linuxdoc.org, but I am really
inexperienced with the whole deal. I compiled in the support for using
scsi emulation, scsi cd player, and disabled ide cdplayer in the kernel
config. My cd reader and writer are both able to mount cd's, and I'm
able to play audio with my regular cd player. If I ask too many
questions, I apologize.

>From the howto: do I need to make devices if I already know which
devices the cd hardware are on (/dev/sr0 - /dev/sr1)? What software do
I actually need? I see that mkiosfs or mkhybrid are mentioned in the
howto for images. Do I need one of those if I have cdrecord,
cdparanoia, and xcdroast? This is probably the most confusing to me.

If someone can send in a good sample list of software that would allow
me to write cd's and make mp3's (along with a recommendation of what
combination to use), I would really appreciate it. I also looked at the
setup options for xcdroast, and it made no sense to me. I'm definitely
not opposed to reading documentation, but I'm not understanding what
I've read so far. A summary of what needs to be done would be much
appreciated. Thank you.

[EMAIL PROTECTED] (David C.) wrote in <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:

He was probably referring to _most_ CPUs - which can have temperatures well
into this range in their core when operative. One exception is the
Transmeta Crusoe, which runs considerably cooler than the usual
Pentiums/K6/K7 and similar. All Electronics that require cooling will have
a difference between their core and the actual cooler/sink. So even if the
sink temperature is -40degC, the core might still be operating at 100degC.
And it probably will be too.

The key point is this: The whole idea about kryotech cooling, and all other
forms of cooling, for that matter, is to ensure the chip doesn't get _too_
hot. So when pushing a design beyond it's normal limits, (which will raise
the core temperature beyond what is healthy...) extra cooling will be
employed to keep the internal temperature in it's normal, specified range.
Same as most overclockers do when adding extra fans, peltiers or larger
sinks.

Correcting myself, it is of course possible that the Kryotech cools the
core well below normal temperatures to enhance stability, but for most
normal systems today, the core will be really hot... :)

Subject: Upgraded System
Date: Fri, 14 Jul 2000 10:29:47 +0100

Hi,

I wonder if anyone can shed some light on the following problem.

I just upgraded my system from a 486 DX2 66 to an AMD K6-2 500 with 64
Mb of RAM. As you can see this was a major overhaul with virtually
everything replaced except hard-drive cd-rom, modem and network cards. I
booted linux for the first time and it went through Kudzu (yes I've got
RH 6.1) and added new hardware and removed old drivers for sound and
graphics. The good news is this seemed to work better than Windows
(there's hope yet?). However I am now experiencing the following
problems:

1. My new M/board is a Gigabyte GA-5AX and I'm having problems detecting
the Modem. I went through this when installing the modem on the 486 so I
have a rough idea what to do normally?? I have set the bios as no PnP os
and set it to automatically configure the settings and also to restore
from ECSD (the bios is award). Windows sets the modem as com3 port 03e8
irq 5 however the initial bootup identifies three ports ttys0,1,2 ports
03f8, 02e8, 03e8 irq 4,3,4 respectivly (is this what setserial initially
detects?). Then I see boot msg for two setserial lines I believ this to
be the old config for ttys0,1 on my old system. My problem is,
regardless of what I enter with setserial I get the error "input/output
error". I suspect that this is a problem with Identifying the pci/isa
chipset (or something?) because this is the error I get for all ports
and all options within setserial. I have found on the linhardware
website (www.linhardware.com) that there is a patch for this m/board for
the Ali chipset but it seems to be for the PCI-IDE part. Should I apply
this patch? (considering this would be my first compile it seems a bit
scary to do a patch as well). If I do this option would I be better to
download 2.2.16 from ftp.kernel.org?

2. Whilst trying to configure this modem I used pnpdump --dumpregs which
agrees with the windows setting. However after doing a "pnpdump -c >
/etc/isapnp.conf" and uncommenting the relevant options and then doing
an "isapnp /etc/isapnp.conf" I get "isapnp.conf:114 error: trying to
check device already activated. Do I not need to do this?, or just sort
out setserial.

3. Another minor issue is regardless of what I enter on lilo boot prompt
I always go to run level 5 if I type "rh 3" (rh is my label for rh6.1)
it still goes to run level 5, why is that?

Apart from the above issues I am quite impressed with the upgrade and
the performance boost it has given me (roll on Gnome 1.2 ;-)). I just
would like to get my modem working so I don't have to use winblows for
surfing:-(.

Would I be better to effectively re-install linux?

TIA,

Jamie T.

P.S. sorry for the long post but I figured the more info the better.

Hello,

I posted a message a couple of weeks ago about not being able to get the
serial ports to work under Linux on my FIC VA-503+ motherboard. I worked
on this some more, and am able to send and recieve from the reports when I
connect pins 2 and 3. However, it will not communicate with any serial
device. I see things going through the port by wstching /proc/interrupts
(it does increse when I send data) but nothing ever shows up. It almost
seems like to me the ports are operting at their own baud rate that
nothing else understands. These ports work fine under DOS, and I have
used stty and minicom to verify the port speed (prefer 9600). Anyone have
any suggestions?

Subject: GeFORCE & Riva TNT2 Driver ?
Date: Fri, 14 Jul 2000 13:30:05 GMT

Hi folks, I read in some ng postings that, if one can't get the NVidia
drivers to work for the GeFORCE, the Riva TNT2 is a good subsitute server
to use. I made the change on my own PC after backing up my original
XF86Config, and everything worked beautifully. The NVidia drivers for the
GeFORCE seem to be buggy as heck; I could not get them working at anything
higher than a color depth of 4 and resolution of 800x600. Mouse and
window movement was very jerky, and running Netscape sapped almost all
color from the desktop (so that netscape could use the resources,I assume).

What I want to know is, can this configuration damage or shorten the
lifespan of my monitor & video card ? I know one can damage some hardware
on a Linux system by specifying incorrect settings, and I'd like to know
how much of a risk I'm running by using a Riva TNT2 driver on a Hercules
GeFORCE 256 DDR-DVI (AGP, 32 MB) video card.

Thx in advance !!!

You may have problems with >64M of memory. If the BIOS reports the true
amount of memory, but Linux only sees 64M, look for the 'ACPI Aware O/S'
setting in the BIOS, and set it to 'No'.
I have a K7M board and AMI BIOS from 1999. Other BIOSs may call the setting
something different.

Good luck,

Hmm. If I have trouble, I'll make the 0x330 => 0x230 change, but let's
solve the other part of the problem first.

I've just been through the conf.modules, modprobe, insmod, depmod and
sysctl man pages looking for the exact syntax I needed to 'put it, and
its options' into conf.modules and came up blank. (I also looked for
the sysctl.conf man page that sysctl referenced, but it is missing from
the set that came with RH 6.2.). pardon my ignorance, but could you give
me a rough idea of what I should insert in /etc/conf.modules?
