Subject: Dual-head setup with ATI cards and XFree 4.0.1
Date: Sun, 16 Jul 2000 00:39:05 +0800

Hello,

I installed XFree 4.0.1 binaries on Mandrake 7.1 and it seems to work
well
with one card :

ATI 3D Rage Pro - on board AGP card on a Dell GX1

I want to try dual-head and so installed a PCI card :

ATI Rage IIc 4M

With 2 cards installed I cannot start X on the on-board AGP
card, even though it shows up on "XFree86 -scanpci"
Only the PCI card works.

I'd be most grateful for any suggestions.

Thanks,

Joe (newbie)

Subject: Super Commander Dataswitch problems
Date: 15 Jul 2000 17:46:03 GMT

Hi,

I have a Super Commander data switch, which allows me to switch between 4
PC's. It uses the keyboard for its control (scroll lock scroll lock space
to enter the interface), but I have a very annoying problem.

Whenever I start X-windows (Gnome), my keyboard and mouse stop
functioning. I can also not use the hotkeys anymore to switch to another
PC. The only thing I can do is use the switch itself to go back to
another display. Does anyone use the Super Commander or has a solution ?

Personally I think it's because X-windows or gnome takes over the keyboard
and doesn't allow any hot keys anymore, is that possible ?

If you know of an answer, please mail me at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thanks,
Thomas

Recently starting having eletric supply problems, losing power for 30
seconds or so. I figure it's time for a UPS but I don't have any free serial
ports. Any recommendations, will a UPS work here?

Can anyone tell me if the USB US Robotics external voice fax modem works
with the USB-supported/backported kernels, or should I keep on trying? Using
kppp to talk to the modem (via setup) produces a "modem busy" message with
Suse 6.4.

Just copy all the files to a directory in your hard disk,
execute chmod 777 *.bin in that directory
than run the .bin file which has number 000
this file will make the installation

Hi all. I have been running Mandrake 7.1 successfully so far on my P133 for
about two weeks. Everything has gone fairly smoothly until I tried to get my
Internet connection up and running. Here's the details: I can connect to my
ISP just fine, but the connection speed is REALLY slow unless I move the mouse.
This sounds to me like a possible hardware conflict, maybe conflicting
interrupts. I changed the jumpers on my modem to COM 3, IRQ 3. My mouse is on
COM 1, IRQ 4. I thought that this would solve the problem, but it hasn't. I
have to keep moving the mouse in order to download information. Any thoughts
as to what this could be? Any utilities I could use to change stuff around?
Thanks for any help.

I just installed Corel Linux 2 days ago so I am very new to linux. I
have an Aztech 3011 ISA PnP modem. I am trying to configure it to work.
I ran pnpdump > /etc/isapnp.conf to make the isapnp file. Now I don't
know what lines to uncomment out. My card has a sound card/modem/and
more stuff. All of it shows up in isapnp.conf when I went to edit it.
I would like to get all of it working. I don't really know what to do
though. I found the part about the modem I just don't know what numbers
to use and which lines to delete the # on. My modem is on com2 in
windows (ttyS1 in Linux). What do I need to do? Thanks in advance.

Subject: Asus P2B-D, dual PIII-650MHz, SMP not working right
Date: Sat, 15 Jul 2000 12:35:21 -0700

Just bought a system with an Asus P2B-D and two Pentium III-650's.
Installed Red Hat 6.2. When I compile the Linux kernel (a big job
that stresses the computer pretty well for two or three minutes) with
  make -j2 bzImage
it fails on a different source file each time, complaining of
an assembler error. Rerunning 'make -j2 bzImage' immediately
causes it to compile the same file without errors and move on.
This is the classic sign of a hardware problem -- but it appears
to be specific to having both processors actively working and
using the disk at the same time.

I can reproduce the problem three ways:
1. boot SMP with all 32 MB RAM, run X, and 'make -j2 bzImage'
2. boot SMP with 'linux mem=24M', run in console mode, and 'make -j2 bzImage'
3. boot SMP with all 32 MB RAM, run in console mode, and 'make -j4 bzImage'
It's very reproducible with the first two methods, and fairly so
with the third.
Booting uniprocessor and doing 'make -j2 bzImage' doesn't do it,
booting SMP and running 'make bzImage' doesn't do it,
booting SMP in console mode with all 32 MB RAM and running 'make -j2 bzImage' doesn't
do it.

The RAM is PC100 ram, and passed an overnight check with memtest86.
The power supply is only 250W, but I think I have 80 watts to spare
(50 watts per CPU + 20 watts hard drive + 10 watts each RAM, CD-ROM,
motherboard chips, ethernet card, and video card: total 170W).

Question: does my motherboard revision support the Coppermine?

http://www.asus.com/Products/Techref/Cpu/Coppermine/ says in part:
The following tables list the up-to-date ASUS motherboard solutions to the Coppermine
processors.
...
Motherboard S1Cu100*
               (HW Rev./BIOS)
P2B-D R1.06/1011****
**** The P2B-D ... can be supported by Coppermine CPU in the later shipment
of the same PCB version. Please contact our reseller for detail information.

OK, so I need at least rev 1.06 of the motherboard, and rev 1011 of the BIOS.
My vendor sealed the case (!) so I'm going to let him check the motherboard
version. Presumably it's new and should be up to snuff, but...

See below for failure logs and contents of /proc/cpuinfo and /proc/mtrr.

I think I'm going to take it back to the vendor and let him fix it...

Look for cdfs. Mounting a multisession CD with -t cdfs will give you access
