I had several problems with mine. Running Red Hat Linux 6.2 using the
on-board ethernet and video periodically froze the machine during
heavy graphics, and during ethernet interface initialization.
Disappointed, I have purchased separate PCI ethernet and PCI video
cards, and the machine has become very solid.

I would love it if I could change how to copy/paste in Netscape. And
gnome_pad. And could manage to copy/paste from the xwhois output window.

The standard kernel drivers for the VIA 82cxxx sound features don't work
very well. I recommend you ditch them and use the ALSA drivers instead
(http://www.alsa-project.org). The ALSA drivers are a nuisance to
install, but they do work.

Get the ESS1978 for Maestro 2E, ESS1968 for Maestro 2 and Lucent (most
likely for ESS codec) at http://linnix.com.

You can also acquire patches for the 2.2.x kernels to add USB support.
I'm running such patched kernels on two systems, and they work fine.
Check http://www.linux-usb.org for details.

My understanding is that the USB support maps data storage devices onto
the SCSI drivers, so in theory, USB tape drives should look like SCSI
tape drives, once the appropriate support is installed. I don't know if
this actually works with any actual tape drives, though. The USB web
site does include a hardware compatibility listing, so you may luck out
and find some information there. If not, you could try buying a drive
from a place with a good return policy, and then return it if you can't
get it to work.

Subject: APM & SMP ;^(
Date: Mon, 24 Jul 2000 16:58:40 +0200

Hy linuxers,
I just found out that I cannot "automatically" power off my dual system.
This seems (to me) related to the following kernel message at boot time:

apm: BIOS version 1.2 Flags 0x03 (Driver version 1.13)
apm: disabled - APM is not SMP safe.

The 'apm' (and apmd) command says:

        No APM support in kernel

When I issue a

        halt -p

the linux system is correctly shut-ted down but the hardware
is not powered off; and I think this will suck my battery...

I would like to REALLY power off the system (via APM?) whenever my
UPS tells there are power failuers, I don't need the system to
go to "sleep" or some other strange "pause" state. This is
a production machine and I assume it should never rest.

Details:
. Linux 2.2.16 (distribution is Slackware 7.1)
. motherboard ASUS P2B-D
. 2x Intel Pentium III 700 MHz
. 256 MB RAM
. Adaptec AHA-2940UW
. 3x 309170UW IBM SCSI disks
. and some other stuff of course...

I actually don't know what kernel APM feature I need to enable,
I just enabled the following (but the kernel won't care anyway
(see message above):

y -> Advanced Power Management BIOS support
n -> to all the other feature except
y -> Use real mode APM BIOS call to power off

Is there a way to have APM and SMP work together?
Has anybody any clue on this?

Thanks in advance,
Ciao nIc

BTW: for the rest the system looks fine and very fast!

I have an IBM Thinkpad 600 with Linux on it, from the SuSE 6.3
distribution. The install process was painless, PCMCIA worked
automagically, and SaX correctly configured my video display.
I can't help you with the 1492 model, but at least some of the IBM

Hi..

This is one for the Arm / Linux experts out there.

Will linux run slower on an Arm920 than an X86 processor of equivalent
speed. Are there any benchmarks available as to how the Linux OS
performs on an Arm920 processor against how it performs on x86
processor.

Is there a minimum size cache required in order to allow Linux to give
reasonable good performance. I presume that its safe to say the bigger
the cache size the better Linux is likely to perform?

I doubt that a dual intel 1GHZ CPU machine would be the cheapest! A
single 700 MHz Athlon (what I use) provides quite a lot of horsepower at
a very reasonable cost. I highly recommend it. Get a high performance
video card that is well supported by Linux; probably a Matrox G400 is
best. Support is even available for the dual head video on them (I'll
get around to adding a second monitor one of these days.

Unfortunately, I believe you are SOL on synthesis tools for Linux. This
appears to be the one remaining hole for EDA. I do all my EDA work under
Linux, and solved the synthesis problem by running a Windoze synthesis
program within VMware under Linux. A bit of extra trouble, but it saves
having a separate machine, or -heaven forbid- rebooting into Windoze,
just for synthesis.

In the Netscape install directory, there's a file called "Netscape.ad".
This contains all the application defaults - including key/mouse
bindings.

You can either change this (to affect all users) or you can copy/paste
sections of it into your ~/.Xdefaults file (to affect only one user.)

Don't know about these. I've never used them. A lot of X applications
support extreme amounts of customization via .Xdefaults. Hopefully, the
docs for these apps will tell you how.

I found a broken NSM "mercury 40" SCSI jukebox surplus and have finally fixed it.
It has 4 SCSI drives, each appearing as a SCSI device (no LUNs) and holds 150
CDs. The CD loading mechanism is controlled by an RS-232 serial interface. I
have no manual for this thing and so, have no idea of the RS-232 command set.
I have the ability (though not yet the knowledge) to write a Linux driver if I can find
the command set (and the time). I would, however, prefer to just find the driver on
the net somewhere. If you know of software (or a method) I can use to get this
thing attached (preferably via my Linux server) to my network please help me out.

hi Rob,

I guess that you can have somekind hardware conflickt - check IRQ, DMA and IO
setting for network card and Sound card. I guess that they can not live on same
IRQ or can be configured to use same IO.

Check, and may be it will help to solve problem

Try to pull out sound card and if you NIC become alive - it will point this
issue of hardware conflict.
