It is sufficient to load the kernel module vfat as root. This does NOT require
to build an own kernel - what may cause other problems.

Loading the module must be done as root:

/sbin/modprobe vfat

This line can be put into the some init file e.g. into /etc/rc.d/rc.local.

The reccomended method is:

(1) use kerneld or kmod (preferred)
(2) put 'vfat' in /etc/modules.

Additional sense indicates write error

tar: cannot write to /dev/st0: input/output error

Actually, after a little tweaking with LILO, the system now boots just
fine off of the hard drive using the vmlinuz and initrd from the floppy.
I now dread doing a kernel upgrade! I'd still like to know if anyone has
any ideas about my original problem.

Ok. I have 2 NE2000 compatible cards. The kernel messages at boot say that
both eth0 and eth1 modules are loaded successfully. But when I check with
"lsmod", only eth0 "ne" module has been loaded. My conf.modules file is as
follows:

alias eth0 ne
alias eth1 ne
options eth0 -o ne-0 io=0x240 irq=5
options eth1 -o ne-1 io=0x300 irq=3

By the way eth0 is configured to connect via dhcp.

My question is: Because one on my cards is connected via dhcp, does that
interfere with both cards using the "ne" module. Is there a workaround for
this?

Hello,

I'm about to finally get ADSL through SouthWest Bell here in Oklahoma.
I plan on doing IP-Masq'ing to allow the other machines in my house to the
net via the Linux box. I had this set up just fine at one time with my
Mandrake machine connecting to the net via a modem and the others just
sharing the connection.

Does anyone have ADSL from SWBell on their Mandrake (or other Linux)
machine? If so, are there any issues I should be aware of? I'll have
dynamic IP, so I just plan on setting up DHCP for the card hooking into the
DLS router (modem?) and doing IP-Masq'ing like I used to do via the other
NIC. Does this sound about right? The installation instructions from
SWBell that they sent me (I haven't received the equipment, yet) obviously
don't mention Linux.

TIA,

initrd is not necessary, so long as you compile the appropriate stuff
directly into the kernel. initrd seems to be more of a headache for
people than anything else, or so my reading of the NGs tells me. When
you compile a kernel, make sure you put {IDE,SCSI} disk support, MD
support, RAID{0,1,whatever} support, and ext2 filesystem support
directly into the kernel and not as modules. No initrd needed, less
mucking about with LILO and worrying whether or not it's going to work.

Date: Fri, 28 Jul 2000 17:17:56 +0200

Hi all,
I cannot get LILO booting from an SCSI disk. Can you give me some
hints?

This is the situation. I've just installed Linux Red Hat 6.2 on a Dual
Pentium III machine equipped with:
        Mainboard: SUPERMICRO, SUPER P6DBE
SCSI controller: Adaptec SCSI Card 29160
        SCSI disk: Seagate ST318436LW (17.5G)
        IDE disk: Seagate STS320430A (20GB)

The IDE disk is only temporally installed, and it is going to be used
only to hold data, no system files. All the system is installed on the
SCSI disk. This is the partition table (generated with disk druid):
====================
Disk /dev/sda: 255 heads, 63 sectors, 2233 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 bytes

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 * 1 13 104391 83 Linux
/dev/sda2 14 2233 17832150 5 Extended
/dev/sda5 14 906 7172991 83 Linux

/dev/sda9 2175 2213 313236 82 Linux swap
/dev/sda10 2214 2233 160618+ 83
Linux --------------------

and this an excerpt from /etc/fstab:
====================
/dev/sda10 / ext2 defaults
1 1
/dev/sda1 /boot ext2 defaults
1 2
/dev/sda5 /home ext2 defaults
1 2
/dev/sda6 /usr ext2 defaults
1 2
/dev/sda7 /usr/local ext2 defaults
1 2
/dev/sda8 /var ext2 defaults
1 2
/dev/sda9 swap swap defaults
0 0
====================
So the /boot partition is (/dev/sda1) located at very beginning of the
disk.

The overall installation was straightforward. Only the LILO
installation issued a warning:
"Warning: /dev/sda1 is not on the first disk"

But then, before booting again I changed the BIOS booting sequence
setting SCSI on the first place and IDE on the second. After saving
this, the booting is restarted. The BIOS displays:
"Searching for Boot Record from SCSI..OK"
And then only appears:
"LI"
and it gets frozen.
        According to LILO's User's Guide (pag. 44):
"LI The first stage boot loader was able to load the second stage boot
loader, but has failed to execute it. This can either be caused by a
geometry mismatch or by moving /boot/boot.b without running the map
    installer."
Of course, I haven't moved /boob/boot.b. Since the disk is a large one,
I used the "linear" global option in lilo.conf, but no luck. I've also
tried without it, with the same lack of success.

If I install LILO on the IDE disk, it works all right, but I don't like
this solution because of the temporal condition of the disk.

        LILO's version is 21.

I would greatly appreciate any help to get the SCSI disk booting
properly.

        Thanks in advance!
        Cheers!

        Jos Manuel

I saw last week that Plextor was selling a new writer, Plextor

Is someone install this writer on a Linux box ? What are the problems ?

it is not true that whell mouse doesn't work without imwheel - just you need
add some configuration lines into .XDefault file. You can read my previous

To compile this driver you need select experimental kernel. To do that
start

menu xconfig

and select very first option in menu and inside of this menu say "Y" it should
ungrey option for driver. (Sorry I do not remember name of the option but it is

first in left right conner of main menu)

Good luck
