Well, if you're convinced of it being the L2 cache, then it -is-
hardware.

On 'modern' CPUs, the L2 cache is part of the CPU 'assembly'. If it's
your cache that's being corrupted, then you will need to replace it: it
is not a dimm or simm "stick". (Even with a plain old "Pentium" it
wasn't on a simm, it was usually a few static ram chips on the
motherboard: simms are dynamic ram, with an access speed slow enough to
make using them as a cache silly.)

Subject: ? redhat linux 6.2 - panasonic CW-7585 CD-RW - gnome cd mounter
Date: Sat, 29 Jul 2000 07:44:44 GMT
i have redhat linux 6.2 (linux kernel-2.2.16-3) and a panasonic CW-7585
ATAPI CD-R/CD-RW.
both OS and hardware are new.
when running a gnome session, the magicdev process (responsible for
automatically mounting such removable media) periodically polls this
device to see if there is a disk available to mount or play.
every time it polls the CW-7585 device, the open(2) call results in a
set of kernel message that gets logged to /var/log/messages. since it
polls often, this file grows large quickly. a typical set of messages
looks like:
Jul 28 17:12:58 localhost kernel: ATAPI device hdd:
Jul 28 17:12:58 localhost kernel: Error: Not ready -- (Sense key=0x02)
Jul 28 17:12:58 localhost kernel: (reserved error code) -- (asc=0x3a,
ascq=0x01)
Jul 28 17:12:58 localhost kernel: The failed "Read Cd/Dvd Capacity"
packet command was:
Jul 28 17:12:58 localhost kernel: "25 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
00"
i notice a similar set of messages on the console when booting.
i notice a similar set of message in /var/log/messages when i write a
dumb program that opens the device like magicdev does.
i notice no such messages with a toshiba SD-M1302 ATAPI CD/DVD drive on
the same system.
besides the annoying messages, magicdev seems to work fine when a disk
is inserted in this drive.
but normally a disk is not in this drive and i cannot live with a full
/var file system!
for now, i have commented out the /etc/fstab entry for this device to
inhibit magicdev from polling it.
i would like to get this problem fixed and eventually use this drive to
burn CD-R and CD-RW disks.
help?!?!?
TIA!

Is the CD drive an IDE or SCSI?
If it's an IDE, there shouldn't be a problem with the setup. Mandrake doesn't
seem to handle SCSI very well. I've been having problems with this also.
By the way, is this mailing list the "email support" that you get when you buy
Mandrake Complete v.7.1? If so, it's pretty cheesy of them.

Subject: Promise UDMA-33, DOS Install of Debian with W95 (Newbie)
Date: Sat, 29 Jul 2000 16:12:29 +0100
I'm a linux newbie that woul like to know a little more about Linux (Debian
2.1) and my Promise UDMA33 Card.
I've looked up the linux hardware compatibility HOWTO and found all my
hardware listed except my UDMA-33 Controller. I've also looked at the
Promise UDMA66/Hotrod PCI posting but this is meaningless to me (yes, i'm
that sort of a newbie)
My Machine is a very early PII on an Intel 440FX (P-Pro) Motherboard. It
didn't have UDMA Support and so a Promise UDMA-33 controller (PCI) was
added.
On channel 0 of this lies a UDMA33 Quantumn Fireball 6.4Gb (6,149Mb under
promise card, 5.99Gb under FAT32). On the motherboard there are two IDE
channels. Master on the first channel is a Phillips CDRW800 and Master on
the second channel is an LG 40x IDE CDROM.
On POST at boot-up the machine Initialises the graphics card, does thge
memory test, initialises the Phillips CDRW, then initialises the LG CDROM.
Then a screen for the promise card comes up, where it detects the HDD before
starting to boot MSDOS (followed by W95).
My plans were to use Partition Magic to make a 3.8 (ish) Gb partition for
95, a 128Mb partition for Linux Swap Space and Two 1Gb partitions for Linux
and software and for user files. I'd then install Debian from the DOS
partition and it would co-exist with W95. Is this possible with the Promise
card and can anyone explain LoadLin, LILO and IBM Boot Manager to me (for
choosing the OS at startup)?
If anyone can help, please email me at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi everybody.
I have a Philips ISDN PCA 128 Modem, and as it's about 4 years old, I
can't get any support from Philips. They don't remember anything about
it.
It seems that there's currently no driver available for it under linux,
so I would like to write one myself. The problem is that I can't get the
specs of the card. I know that it uses a MB86701 PnP controller
(Fujitsu), a SAB 82525 HDLC controller (Siemens), and an AM79C32AJC ISDN
controller (AMD). I'd like to avoid having to redraw the schematic of
the card and try to understand how it works, so could anyone give me
some help ? Anything is welcome, either an idea or a more complete
solution.
I have a Win95 driver, but once again I'd like to avoid having to
dissassemble it and try to understand the assembly code.
The card is and ISA PnP (works fine with isapnptools), and uses the
following resources :
IO : 0x140 - 0x14F
IRQ : 3
Thanks in advance for your help.

I understand that most motherboards a very limited in the number of
ide controllers they may have. Like 2. My onboard controller is lame,
so I need a way of getting two more IDE channels.
I would like to set up software mirroring and I had heard that there
were controllers that allowed you to have two masters (the raid how-to
says that doing raid as master slave is bad for performance) Any ideas?
I realize that if something happens to the controller then I am lost.
How can I find out how many IDE controllers I am allowed?

Subject: Newbie install problems
Date: Sat, 29 Jul 2000 12:12:02 -0400
I am not a programmer, but I hate windows so I tried to load Linux-
Mandrake 7.1. Unfortunately, I just upgraded most of my computer, to a
PIII 550, ASUS CUBX Mobo, Nvidia GeForce 2 GTS video, and a viewsonic
G773 monitor. First, during installation, 7.1 would not recognize my new
10.2g ATA/66 HD that was on the Third IDE connector. It would only find
my old 1.2g on Primary IDE. So I rebooted with the new HD on one of the
slower ATA/33 controllers(Primary IDE). Then reinstal went fine until it
came to configuring the Printer. I have an old HP Deskjet 820. When it
came to choosing which printer to use, the top of the window said HP 820
found, but there was no where to choose it in the configuration window.
I never could get the printer to work. so next tried another install
this time I chose not to install printer. The next problem was the
Monitor. The install found the Viewsonic G773 monitor that I have but
when I selected it, the screen went jumbled. I tried 4-5 different
monitor selections even generic but could not get anything to work. I am
not completely computer illiterate, but when it comes to messing with the
Kernel I'm lost.
1 - Is there anyway to put windows on one hard drive and Linux on the
other and have a dual boot machine. Windows will be on ATA/66 IDE 3 HD
and Linux on Primary IDE ATA/33 HD.
2 - Is my video card to new to install Linux, until a later version comes
out.

Subject: HPT366 Support in Linux-- PLEASE HELP!
Date: 29 Jul 2000 12:14:09 EDT
I am very new to Linux but am learning fast. So far I've successfully
resolved a few key hardware issues, but not my UDMA 66 controller, which I
really need to use. I am running a dual-boot system and the win98 side, for
some reason, is incredibly buggy when I use the 33 connector. Some details:
I'm using an Abit BE6-II motherboard with a celeron II 533a (clocked to
800...), a 15 gb 7200 rpm Ultra66 HD, running Redhat 6.1. Obviously, I
tried booting up with my hard drive connected to the 66, and I didn't work.
First thing I tried to fix this was updating my kernel. I applied a patch
to the 2.2.15 kernel and I believe- installed it successfully. I enabled
the hpt366 support in config but when I rebooted, I still got "Kernel Panic:
VFS: Unable to mount fs on 3:06." or some such error. Next thing I tried
was to upgrade to an experimental kernel (2.3.30) which had hpt366 support
without patching. Same thing happened at bootup. Then I tried the numbers
trick. I put something like "ide2=0xb400,0xb800,10" at the top of my
lilo.conf. Not sure that was the right way to issue a boot command, and it
didn't work in any case. So now I'm really stuck and would very much like a
solution. I'm thinking about getting a "dinky" 2.4 gb old hard drive from a
friend for a couple bucks and killing the Linux partition I currently have.
I don't even know if this will work however- to have one primary master on
Ultra66 and one on the 33. I don't know where all the boot stuff would go.
Anyway, I would REALLY appreciate any help. Thanks a lot in advance
Ian
