Pentium = big cache, Celeron= little cache
I think the question here is 'How does Processor cache size effect
performance'... I am not the best person to answer that.
If it follows suit of most else, the Pentium will be slightly faster
normally and a little faster under heavy load. It probably depends on
what your going to do use your laptop for.

I have a Microtek Scanner connected via a SCSI port. Can it be used in
Red Hat 6.2, or any other distribution?

I use XMMS. Nice.
I use XBVibra16Pnp also. It can be really challenging to get sound
working sometimes. I've found the following sequence of modules
works pretty well
insmod soundlow
insmod soundcore
insmod sound
insmod uart401
insmod sb io=0x220 irq=5 dma=1
insmod mpu401
imsmod opl3
I'm currently using SuSE 6.4 Linux, with Pnp enabled, so I don't
have to use the manual module insertion. When I used 6.3 (I think it
was) I used the sequence above.

Yes, look for the 'sane' rpm or do a web search for it. Most of the
support is for SCSI scanners (hardly any for parallel port scanners).

In *that* case, maybe we should talk to "Linux Online" about removing
their endorsement from the Supermicro website? Claims like "superior
quality and technical support" and "logical choice" etc
seem to be ringing a little hollow right about now ...
FWIW, is this likely to even be fixable? I could live with reflashing my
BIOS / firmware, but there's always the nightmare scenario of something
wired incorrectly on the mobo itself.

I heartily endorse the HP Laserjet 6P or 6MP. I have several of them that
have been plugging along for years with absolutely no problems.
The one next to me as I type this is networked to my desktop, my son's
desktop and my wife's laptop. When I want to print something from my laptop
I just beam it over from my Thinkpads via the built-in IR port on the HP.
You should be able to find the 6P on eBay for around $250 or the 6MP for
around $350. Check:

Go for a Celeron, my friend, it gives the most bang for the buck. More
important to spend money on RAM than on a killer CPU. These are good days to
be CPU shopping, the performance differences between the Celeron, Pentium
III, and Athlon are not very significant. Buy AMD with confidence, they are
as good or better than their Intel counterparts.

Thanks Fellas
I managed to get this thing working with both Linux and Win98 yesterday. Just
goes to show that the HOWTO's should really be a first port of call.
For anybody else having problems here's what I did:
Followed the howto instructions to find out what the linux serial port (in
this case ttyS2) address and interrupt were. Followed the manufacturers(?!)
guide to set the card jumpers accordingly. Switched to windows (where the
card wuld not now work as it was no longer PnP) and installed a new serial
port in 'Add new Hardware'. Then restarted windows to allow it to see the
modem.
Just got to sort out my Lexmark 5700 printer now!
Thanks again.

Probably a bug in pdc202xx.c :) test6 should be out soon, hopefully it has
been fixed there. You can then patch your kernel to test6, and try again.
If it still fails, submit a bug-report to the kernel-guys with a detailed
description of the error and your hardware (And other info that may be
helpful).

Well, I run Linux (RedHat 6.0 - kernel 2.5.5-15) on a 400mHz Celeron-powered
system with 256 megs of RAM. Linux says it is on an "i686" at bootup and
some stuff I have compiled (to get my tape drive working, for example)
required my to select processor type where i686 was available. I selected it
as "i686" and it worked just fine - I have full access to and can utilise my
tape drive perfectly. It compiled and installed without any problems at all,
and I run a Celeron.
So, IMHO, it doesn't matter - if you are not going to do very specialised
stuff, a Celeron is just as good as a Pentium?
Right?

I don't know! X11amp was installed automatically by the RedHat Linux
installer when I installed Linux. I was presented with no errors - all you
see is a running textmode progress bar in the Text based RH installer
infterface.
> Another question is why would you run as root? it's just bad practice.
'cause it is the only login that once worked with X11Amp. I recently
reinstalled Linux (i. e. reformatted my ext2 partition and then installed it
"as new") - before that, on my "old" Linux setup, X11Amp at least worked -
but then only as root user. Many posts I got here told me to, mainly,
"chmod" /dev/dsp and /dev/audio etc. - none worked. Now, on my "new" Linux
install, even as root, I cannot get it to produce a peep.
> Get us some error messages, and maybe we can help you diagnose.
That's the kicker - there are no errors. It just closes down on attempting
to load a MP3 for playing - i. e. it looks identical to what should happen
if you click the X (program close) on the application's interface. Not a
beep nor a click comes from the speakers.
Thanks a lot for the reply!!

XMMS - hmm. URL?

Whoa - installing my sound card in RedHat6.0 was as easy as running
"sndconfig", selecting autodetect and it was all over. Works - i. e. I can
hear sounds in GNOME and I can play midi files from the console etc.
Only problem is still MP3's....

Subject: Linux on a really old machine with no CD-ROM
Date: Sun, 6 Aug 2000 13:13:55 +0200
Hi!
I have a truely ancient machine (386DX with 4 meg of RAM and no CD drive). I
have the RedHat 6 distrib on CD.
Is it somehow (by some miracle I suppose!) possible to get Linux installed
on this system? How would I "parcel off" the needed stuff from the CD to get
a bare bones Linux install running on a system with only a floppy? HDD
capacity is a truely ancient (as well) 200meg Seagate drive.
Or should I just forget it? I want to try and see if I can set up some kind
of remote terminal thingy with a serial cable - I have some info on getting
a getty process running on my host system (400mHz Celeron with 256 megs of
RAM). Or would I do better to leave DOS installed on the 386 and run some
kinda terminal emulator thingy? Any URL's for such DOS programs?
Thanks!

Hmm - have your tried forcing a higher color depth (say 24 bit)? It seems
that X has trouble with bit depths other than this, at least on some models
of video cards... I forced mine into 24 bit display and it is the only bit
depth that works - 640x480x8 as you mentioned does NOT work for me. Only 24
bit.
