I have the exact same video card.  I have got X to run.  Sort of.  First off,
forget XFree86 4.x -- it isn't supported.  Under 3.3.6, there are two "generic"
S3 savage4 definitions, and I believe the Stealth III S520/S540 uses the same
chipset, which is another option you may want to try.  I've achieved identical
results using each of these.  When prompted, pick the SVGA driver -- the others
don't recognise the card.  This will allow X to start.  However, there's a
catch :(  -- I can only get it to run at 320x200 resolution.  This seems to be
because when X probes for clocks, the card comes back with precisely one value,
25.18, and this is the best it can do with that clock rate.  The reason for
this seems to be because when X starts up, it doesn't recognise the Chip ID,
viz:

When it falls back to SVGA generic, 64K RAM, with the stock VGA clock, 320x200
is the best it can do.  Another poster suggested to try to force the chip ID
using the ChipID keyword in the config file.  However, looking at some of the
source on the xfree86 web site, e.g. , 0x8a22 is the correct chip ID for a
Savage4, and SuperProbe identifies it as such.  I'm going to try getting a
newer SVGA driver from the XFree86 ftp site, as mine is dated Jan 8th 1999 and
see if I do any better with that.  If that fails I'll have to revert to the
source and debug it myself.  Good luck, and please keep me posted.
