Just do it... Linux goes to the drive, not the bios, to determine its size.
Don't partition the drive in DOS at all.... do it in the Linux install.

Dear Antony
Your problems is probably with the IRQ. I don't know how you could force it.
You might try to exclude all IRQs except 3?
I've never had any IRQ problems on my laptop. After i upgraded to 6.2 I
haven't done any changes. The card was recognized and the correct driver was
included. My conf.modules does not contain any pcmcia/network stuff.
Since you use RH6.1, check if there is an entry in /etc/pcmcia/config for
the card;
card "3Com Corporation 3CCFE575CT"
manfid 0x0101, 0x5257
bind "3c575_cb"
Then you should find 3c575_cb when you do an lsmod ;
Module Size Used by
3c575_cb 19224 2
cb_enabler 2472 2 [3c575_cb]
ds 6600 2 [cb_enabler]
i82365 29764 2
pcmcia_core 44192 0 [cb_enabler ds i82365]
ppp 20224 0 (autoclean) (unused)
maestro 26820 0
soundcore 2596 2 [maestro]
If not, try add in conf.modules
alias eth0 3c575_cb
N.B . When you define ip-adresses, etc you'll have to do that in
/etc/sysconfig/network, /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 .
/etc/pcmcia/network.opts is bypassed if you use Redhat (the pcmcia rpm from
redhat).

Hi.
Hopefully there is someone out there, who can help me with this
problem. I got a brand new Toshiba Tecra 8100, but it seems as if
several devices share the IRQ 11 (cardbus, USB, soundcard, graphics
card, ... see the lspci print below). I got the network running and
also X. However, I cannot get the soundcard working. It is always tell
me that the resouce is already busy (of course, because it uses IRQ 11
-> cardbus).
Unfortunately I cannot change the IRQs in the setup.
Does anyone know how I can get all this stuff running? (current kernel
2.4.0-test5)
Thanks in advance,
-Sebastian

Either the disk is not terminated (assuming it's the only device
you do have on the SCSI bus), you gave it the same ID as the AHA
card uses (7), or a combination of these causes. Make sure that
the disk and the AHA card are properly terminated (AUTO/SW will not
work!) and that all SCSI IDs are unique.

You shouldn't have to rejumper hardware to fit another O/S.
Anyway, at least in Red Hat 6.2 you don't have to recompile the
kernel. You have to tell lilo about the drive (put the line
append="hdd=ide-scsi" in lilo.conf, where hdd is the hd interface
on which your CD is attached, then run lilo from the command-line
prompt.) Also add /sbin/insmode ide-scsi to your rc.local file.
There may be more, I can't remember offhand, and don't have time
to check my logbook.
If it's set up correctly, then you can su to root and do the
command "cdrecord -scanbus", and should see the drive.

If XF86Setup doesn't work, try xf86config, configure X to the best of
your knowledge using your system's documentation. You might have to
edit the finished XF86Config file and add the apropriate driver setting.
This page might help.

Not necessarily. "Clone" here means "Any card that has the exact same
chipset as the original SB16". Those cards are not made these days.
The SB16 emulation that most cards run when they claim to be SB16
compatible generally requires DOS/Win drivers.

http://linhardware.com/ contains a lot of reviews of cards of all types.
Actually, if you had said the exact make and model of the card you plan
to buy, someone on this NG could probably tell you whether it'd work or
not right off the bat.

On my dell notebook several pci devices also share irq 11. No
