It seems to be (the well known) BIOS problem. Have a look at
http:/go.to/ka7faq and follow the appropriate links.
(Youll have to upgrade your BIOS to either the RY or TY version)

All,

I cannot start nfs locking services either via restart, linuxconf, or
the command line. I consistently get a message (from the log file):

  Executing some Sysv init scripts
    Executing: /etc/rc.d/rc5.d/S10network reload
    Executing: /etc/rc.d/rc5.d/S14nfslock restart
        * The command takes more than 15 seconds to execute, odd
        * killed by operator
Grabbing some late messages from command /etc/rc.d/rc5.d/S14nfslock
  restart
        > lockdsvc: Connection refused
        > [FAILED]rpc.statd [FAILED][ OK ]done.

I think this is causing other problems on my system (at least it is
interferring with using Linuxconf!) I searched the usual sites, but
found no useful references to lockdsvc and it's handling of connections.

Any help would be appreciated.

I have just upgraded to Redhat Linux, 6.2 i586 2.2.14.

Raman

Subject: CRC error

Hi

I've installed RH6.2 on a Mitac MiNote 6120 from CDROM without problems.
But when I reboot the system, my linux box hangs. LILO says

Uncompressing linux...

crc error

--system halted

When I turn off my L1 Cache in the BIOS settings, it works, but very
slow, of course.
My Win98 seems to work, even with cache enabled.
Any hints?

Assuming the path for the kernel tree is /usr/src/linux/......

cd to /usr/src/linux/ and rm -rf modules, this will remove the old module
builds (not the used modules as they'll be in /lib/modules/... If you like
you could always do 'mv modules modules.safe' just to get them out the way.

You'll also want to be doing:
make xconfig - select the config you want such as scsi support, the aha
driver and support for whatever scsi devices you want (e.g. sg.o for
generic such as scanner, sd.o for scsi hard disk, st.o for tape etc.). save
and exit. You should see that the modules directory should have been
recreated (empty).

make dep
make clean
make bzImage - this will build the kernel
make modules - this will bung stuff in the modules subdirectory.

Now if your kernel version label is 2.2.14 then you might want to do 'mv
/lib/modules/2.2.14 /lib/modules/2.2.14.safe' and then:
make modules_install - this will copy the stuff needed from
/usr/src/linux/modules to /lib/modules/2.2.14

You can then copy your new kernel from
/usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/bzImage to /boot/linux-2.2.14, say.

Make sure your lilo.conf is set up accordingly, make sure you've run
/sbin/lilo if you've made any changes.

Now doing this should ensure that your kernel is 'in sync' with the
modules, that is it knows the required module dependencies.

***NB all this should be read in conjunction with the redhat/linux howto
docs regarding compiling new kernels.*****

Have a good check through 'make xconfig' to make sure you've selected all
you need when you're doing that stage.

If you do all that then you should have the required modules built and
dependencies set up. It's usually a good idea to keep your old kernel
knocking around for a while and set up as an option in lilo in case there's
a prob booting the new one.

I *think* I've not forgotten anything but do check with the other docs.

As you've got scsi support modularized then you *wont* get messages on boot
up. Oh, you'll also want the line 'alias scsi_hostadapter aha152x' in your
conf.modules file. Once you've done that you should be able to do, for
e.g., /sbin/insmod sg and it should then load scsi_mod, aha152x, and sg,
you can check this with /sbin/lsmod -a and they should appear listed.

If you have problems still let us know exactly what you've done for
building a new kernel, e.g. you did compile the modules also?

Hope this helps, Guy

You might look into some Tyan boards. I've been very pleased with

I was ready to jump on that particular bandwagon, but was held back by
a lack of funds. Good thing, as it turns out.

I am thinking about buying an ABIT KT7 mobo for an Athlon "Thunderbird".
Apparently the KT7 comes with an onboard RAID controller chip. What
does this mean for setting up linux? Do I want to enable RAID in the kernel

i really only want it to see one?

Hi,

I'm going to build a linux box for serving pop3,
www, webmail and other typical services for 50-60
people. I'm not sure which platform to choose. As
I'm quite short of money and figured out that
epox mvp3-g2 w/ k6-2 550 would be a cheap and
decent conf. However, I'm not quite sure whether
Duron 600 (or so) would make a faster machine at
the same $ cost. Has anyone had a similiar
dilemma? Which one to choose? How does duron
perform as a server? Any motherboard/processor
tips?

Thanks in advance.

Typically, the CPU is not the bottleneck; the I/O is. If you're short
on cash, you may even want to go *slower* on the CPU and buy more RAM
with the money you save. You need at least 128M for 50-60 users, and
256 wouldn't hurt.

The Duron is still sort of new, but I haven't seen any problem reports
on it yet. If you can get a Duron 600 for the same price as a K6-2
550... ? pricewatch lists a Duron 600+mobo at $210 or so, while a K6-2
550+an EpoxMVP3G2 comes out to $171. Socket A mobos, since they're
newer, will be pricier than Super 7, but the Super 7 is almost dead
according to the gearheads...

Hi Paolo!
So you had an interesting meeting with a sorcerer (Mandrake) and
mischevious Mr. Murphy.
We computer users know them for ages.
The best thing that comes to mind in this situation is, few drops of
Valium in half glass of water, a VERY good book on Unix system
administration, and check twice before putting your finger on ANY key.
On more serious note, with such system you should be using the
"horrible" distros which are so lazy that you have to beat them into
submission, IMHO.
And quoting SuSE "Have a lot of fun..."

RAID controllers typically cost over $600, and even add-on RAID
options are usually over $250. Be very sure you know what you're
getting.

It will not.

RAID cards function similarly to SCSI cards, as far as the operating
system is concerned. If you do not have RAID drivers for your card,
you will not be able to access any devices the RAID controller knows
about - even if they are not part of an array.

> What about on install when the installer sees two hard drives when i
> really only want it to see one?

If you start with a clean setup, you probably will need to boot using
a special boot disk provided by the RAID card's manufacturer to
create the array. Once that's done, you'd install Linux on the
array. It will always appear as a single drive (except when you're
doing things like managing spares or whatever).

Can anyone help me get my Aztech sound/modem card work in corel linux.
It is Aztech 3011. It is an isapnp card. I have used the isapnptools
to get them enabled. I enable the sound and get the right ports and irq
and io numbers. I don't know what sound driver to use. I have also
used sndconfig to try. It detects it as a sound galaxy card. It runs
everything then installs sound.o. This doesn't work. There is a module
called sgalaxy in modconf. I tried to use it but it says "Device or
resource busy". I also can get my modem enabled at the same time as my
sound card. I try setserial port #### irq # but it says "Device or
resource busy" also. What's up with this? Why can't I get it to work?
If anyone can help me please reply.

If you are sure, you can try changinf it with the "setserial" command.

read "man setserial".

If this is OK you can add the command to "rc.local" or "rc.serial in the
"rc.d" directory.

For the majority of the services you are likely to run, you will not
need a particularly speedy processor. For WWW, FTP, and email, you
will need a fast disk. "Fast disk" means SCSI. You can very probably
get by with a 9.1GB drive, or, if money is truly tight, several 4GB
drives. (Depends on how much space your users will be needing,
obviously.)

The more RAM you can get, the better.

If people will be using your box for things like development as well,
you might look into an SMP option. You can buy a dual-CPU Pentium Pro
motherboard with integrated SCSI and audio for under $150 now, and two
PPro CPUs together will probably cost about that (but be prepared to
pay $200+ apiece if you want ones with the 1MB cache). If you really
decide to go crazy, you can pick up a 6-CPU setup (sans memory and
CPUs) for under $500 - that includes the giant case you need and all
the riser cards.
