Well, you need software to handle writing to the drive. Usually
cdrecord. Have you got that? What does "cdrecord -scanbus" show? Is the
drive IDE or SCSI? It has to be treated as SCSI (usually) for writing. You
can do that modularly or recompile the kernel (remove support for IDE
CDROM drives, add SCSI support, SCSI CDROM support, generic SCSI driver,
manufacturer extensions - to the kernel along with IDE-SCSI
conversion: also SCSI drives (HD) if you have a ZIP drive, of course: when
you boot you will not have an IDE CDROM drive. All your CDROM drives will
show up as SCSI. This can be done with modules instead of recompiling the
kernel). Then "cdrecord -scanbus" should show your drive (with the info on
the scsi channel). You may want to put a symbolic link in your /dev/
directory (linking, say, /dev/cdrom to scd0 and /dev/cdrw to scd1 or
whatever - on my system I have a CDROM as master which comes up as scd0
and the CDRW drive as slave which comes up as scd1. If you just have one
drive and it comes up as scd0, you probably want a link of /dev/cdrom to
this at scd0 (not cdrw, but cdrom) (I use the two since I have to be able
to tell the difference!) (and your cdplayer, for audio, probably uses the
/dev/cdrom device for playing audio CDs - so you want to call it that).

Make sure you can mount and read CDs and play audio CDs (the device will
not be an ide device any longer, but a scsi device, probably scd0 and you
can use a symbolic link for cdrom).

Once it is working as a scsi device and "cdrecord -scanbus" finds it,
check out the manual page on cdrecord (xcdroast is an X front end).

The latest issue of Maximum Linux has an article on burning CDs and the CD
that comes with it has some software.
