Are you using any hdparm parameters that may cause the problem? Not all
drives are really comfortable with certain combinations of optimizations.
It may help locate the error if you could post the output from "hdparm -i
/dev/hdx" and "hdparm /dev/hdx" for the drives in question. The relevant
lines from "dmesg" would also be a good idea.

Hello everybody,

I saw your post on sol.lists.freebsd.hac about your MG400.

I have a MG400 + Linux Debian 2.2 + XFree-4.0.1 + IIYAMA Monitor 19 Vision
Master Pro450".

I tried to make it work using the resolution 1280x1024 and 32 bpp but
unsuccessfully. I always have a resolution of 1280x1024 with 8 bpp.

Here attached is my XF86Config.

Could you please tell me what's wrong ?

Many thanks.

Hi,
I have a french Pinnacle Studio PCTV pro and I'm
using it under Linux (Redhat 6.2, kernel 2.2.14).
All the installations of the bttv driver failed, I
can't receive properly the french channels.
Then I saw that the tuner on my card is a "Temic
3x7 488 (4009 FR5)". So I suppose it's a Temic
Secam Tuner.
But in the bttv driver, the only Secam tuner
supported is a Philips. Is that the reason the
driver doesn't work?
Has anyone had the same problem?

Caching. It happens in Windows if you speed Windows up (but Windows
defaults to turn off write caching). When you write a file to floppy all
the OS does is note which file you want to write and when it finds time it
will do it in the background (this makes the system more responsive). BUT
if you remove the drive before the write - boom.

Try the "sync" command (which forces the buffer write to the disk) before
umounting or removing the disk

(sync has a manual page)

(of course if you have, say a removable hard drive and the hardware has a
 cache and you remove the drive before the cache is written to disk
 ... the data will have been written to the hard drive's cache but not the
 disk ... sync will get it written that far though)

(by "buffer dirty" - well the buffer is used to hold data to be written to
 disk and it is "dirty" - that is, it hasn't been cleaned out by finishing
 the write - you can wait awhile until the system is done writing the data
 or use the sync command)

If it isn't using the PCTel chipset, it's hopeless. HCF == Host Controlled
Facility (IIRC), and this means it's a pure 100% winmodem. Junk it.
I'd even suggest junking it if it was using the PCTel chipset, since
its philosophy is a bad idea to begin with. Buy a nice external modem that
doesn't depend on manufacturer-(not-) provided drivers.

Adaptec has a new SCSI RAID controller, which looks pretty good:
http://www.adaptec.com/products/overview/raid2100s.html

The best thing is (according to the page): it has Linux support.
And it's not that expensive: about $500,-

This would be the right thing for the server I'm going to build.

But: Adaptec does not include Linux-drivers with the product,
nor do they give pointers to other places where drivers could
be found. I looked at several Linux-sites, but none mentioned
the new controller.

Does anybody know:
1) can I use it with existing drivers?
2) are people working on a driver (and when will it be finished?)

When Adaptec support failes, what are other good RAID
recommendations? (For about $500-$700)

Here is the relevant portions (at least in my mind) upon bootup....
HPT366: onboard version of chipset, pin1=3D1 pin2=3D2
HPT366: IDE controller on PCI bus 00 dev 98
HPT366: chipset revision 1

hdg: 60036480 sectors (30739 MB) w/1916KiB Cache, CHS=3D59560/16/63,
UDMA(66)
Partition check:
 hde: [PTBL] [2330/240/63] hde1 hde2 hde3 hde4 < hde5 >
 hdg: hdg1 hdg2 hdg3 hdg4

(The hde line is slightly different in the 2.2 series.... it reports
UDMA(33) as opposed to UDMA 66. The drive really is a WD 20G 7200RPM
drive with UDMA66. So there is a slight difference between 2.2 and 2.4. )

I obviously can't show the above two lines, which are a part of my
complaint, because it is dumped to the screen plus the machine has
locked up, resulting in the data not being committed to disk...

At first I used the following parameters:

hdparm -d1 -c1 -u1 -m8 -X68 /dev/hde /dev/hdg
When I noticed the problem (as stated above), I forgoed any optimization
with hdparm. By default, it sets up my drive as so:

/dev/hde:
 multcount    =3D  0 (off)
 I/O support  =3D  0 (off)
 unmaskirq    =3D  0 (off)
 using_dma    =3D  1 (on)
 keepsettings =3D  0 (off)
 nowerr       =3D  0 (off)
 readonly     =3D  0 (off)
 readahead    =3D  8 (on)
 geometry     =3D 2330/240/63, sectors =3D 35239680, start =3D 0

/dev/hdg:
 multcount    =3D  0 (off)
 I/O support  =3D  0 (off)
 unmaskirq    =3D  0 (off)
 using_dma    =3D  1 (on)
 keepsettings =3D  0 (off)
 nowerr       =3D  0 (off)
 readonly     =3D  0 (off)
 readahead    =3D  8 (on)
 geometry     =3D 59560/16/63, sectors =3D 60036480, start =3D 0

The problem still occurs even when I leave the hdparm optimizations out.
I've looked at the abit site and found a note about a problem with
the IBM-DTLA drives, so I decided to use their BIOS... and the problems
show up, regardless of what BIOS I use (whether it's their latest
"stable" RU or their beta RU). Switching to PIO isn't really an option
either as a "workaround" because it slows down the throughput
tremendously... from 17 MB/s to about 3.6 MB/s.... plus it uses even
more CPU time as well.

I saw the same lockup upon boot with my *offboard* HPT366 controller.
However this was fixed in the 2.4.0-test1 release. I had no problems after

I know - my disk went from 8MB/s to 21.5 after switching to the test-
kernels and enabling UDMA4.

Hope you can work it out :)

My setup on a Quantum FB lct10 and HotRod 66 PCi controller card uses
hdparm -u1 -c1 -m16 /dev/hda for 21.5 MB/s.

Subject: modules for pci cards not loadable
Date: Thu, 7 Sep 2000 15:26:03 +0200

Hi!

I've run into problems after upgrading to a duron 700 on a asus a7v. I
cannot load any module for my soundcard (fm801), Network adapter (ne2k-pci)
or WinTV radio. The only one working is the Adaptec 2940UW (with aic7xxx).
Surprisingly all cards are recognized correctly when I check
....Information - PCI in KDE. What's wrong?

I tried to compile i2c-2.5.2 and then bttv-0.7.41. depmod -a seemed to work
alright, but when I tried to insmod i2c-dev, I got the funniest messages of
failed dependencies like i2c-algo-bit-7Fk87Djfhe (or something similar).
The same happend after insmod bttv.

I'm running SuSE6.4 and tried the following configurations:
as far as I know, the SuSE kernels have a ide-patch compiled in - at least I
could choose V82CXXX in block devices...
SuSE kernel 2.2.14 (didn't recognize the promise 20265 chip)
SuSE kernel 2.2.16 (see above)
native 2.2.16 with ide-patch (promise works)
2.4.0-test7 (promise works)

With all configurations, I tried to recompile the modules or even to install
the latest sources and compile then. Unfortunately with no succes. I placed
'append="idebus=33"' into lilo.conf, but with no success.

Thanks for any idea!
Carsten

Subject: SMC7004BR Barricade Router: Anybody using one?
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Date: Thu, 07 Sep 2000 13:28:24 GMT

Just bought a Barricade router for my home network and am trying to
install it and make it work on my Linux system (RH6.1, Dell) before
moving it to the basement into the wiring closet.

Have had some problems and am looking for anyone else that has some
experience setting things up to share experiences.

Specifically:

  I understand that it supports DHCP but I cannot make anything work
  while leaving the Linux box in a mode that expects DHCP. I had to
  hardwire an IP address via linuxconf.

  Seem to get long "hangs", most notably Netscape. The application will
  go off into never-never land and sit there. If I just walk away and go
  read a book or something, several minutes later, it will time-out and
  complete whatever I was asking it to do. (This while the Barricade is
  NOT attached to the modem: i.e., not DNS available, etc.)

Regards,

Bill Lee

Subject: LILO hangs after new 20/30 GB IDE disk is installed (Debian 2.2)
Date: Thu, 07 Sep 2000 15:37:42 +0200

Hi,

I have a problem installing new IBM IDE hard disk in a Debian GNU\Linux
2.2 machine that has a role of a file server (Samba).

Hardware configuration:

Micron Millenia PRO2 (PPro 180 MHz, 64 MB RAM)
hda: 15 GB IBM DTLA-307015 (ATA100) IDE disk on IDE 0;
File server storage
sda: 2 GB SCSI disk;
OS dedicated disk

LILO is on hda.

This configuration worked fine. The computer and BIOS are quite old so I
had to add "append="hda=C,H,S"" to lilo.conf for kernel (2.2.17) to
recognize proper size of the disk.

This configuration worked fine until 15 GB disk became too small and we
wanted to add another 30 GB IBM disk (DTLA-307030, ATA100) as master on
IDE 1. IDE controller is not ATA100 but some old one, but this should
not be the problem (master on IDE 0 is also ATA100).

Machine won't boot with this disk attached no matter what I did. LILO
only displays LI.

I tried to disconnect the disk, change LILO append parameters, lba32.
When I added linear, LILO was just writing some odd numbers on the
screen: 40 40 40 ...

I have then tried with a 20 GB ATA66 IBM disk (DTLA-305020). Same
problems as with the other one. I have also tried cabling, etc...

BIOS detects both 30 and 20 GB disk and shows them as 8GB.

Why LILO hangs when the disk is attached?
Does anyone know what else can I do to make LILO run?

Best regards,

Matej

Dear all,

I'm looking for smart card system for security software development on
Linux platform. The system can either be free for download (for
software
part) or reasonable charged. Can anybody please suggest and recommend ?

Thanks in advance.

I don't think you are going to have any luck getting it going in X. The
manufacturer seems to have gone out of business before giving any
documentation for the device. You may try the vesa/fbcon stuff, but I
don't know anything about how to set it up.

6.2 requires a min of 16M ram to install. The ram diak is a vitural disk
made out of memory. If you do not have enough memory your install will fail.
