The performance I have seen thus far from this controller is pretty
impressive.
>1) can I use it with existing drivers?
Yes, the existing dpt i2o linux drivers work with this controller.
>2) are people working on a driver (and when will it be finished?)
Yes, as a matter of fact, there is already a beta driver for the 2.4 kernel
and Adaptec is working on obtaining native inclusion into the kernel.
Currently the Adaptec/DPT i2o source code works in every kernel from 2.0.x
thru 2.2.17! Additionally, there is advanced work in progress for the
Itanium IA-64 driver.
>When Adaptec support fails, what are other good RAID
>recommendations?
Adaptec support doesn't fail, which is something you will miss if you go
with a Mylex or Intel RAID controller. And unfortunately pretty much the
only thing you'll find on ICP Vortex's page is "Incomplete Installation
Disks of Redhat 6.0 and 6.1."
What more could you want from your RAID controller?

Has anyone had any luck using the iomagic UDMA 66 card, perhaps using a
kernel >2.3.4 or with the unified ide kernel patches ? I gather from
usenet posts that IOMagic uses the Promise chipset (which has been
reported to work), but is somehow different from Promise. I'd like to
know whether to return it or start hacking.
www.iomagic.com doesn't even specify the chipset!

Hello,
I tried to install Linux Mandrake 7.01 from a CD with my DVD (SAMSUNG
SD-604) drive, but it displays a lot of error messages "File not found...".
The indicated files are fully readable under Windows, and I installed
successfully Linux on another computer with a CDROM drive and from the same
CD.
Is there sb in the same case as me? Can anybody help me?
Please reply to me by email.

System:
HP Pavilion 8240 P266 32MB RAM 3GB HD
NetworkEverywhere NC100 card
Internet access (DSL) configured through Linksys router
O/S
COL 2.3 kernel 2.2.17 (just upgraded from 2.2.10) installed on /dev/hda1
Swap file on dev/hda2
No other O/S
Background:
Installed NIC but old kernel version did not like tulip and pci-scan modules
Upgraded kernel to 2.2.17 and then installed the netdriver package, courtesy
of Donald Becker/Scyld
Everything worked fine for a few minutes and then system crashed while
browsing and continued to do so every time I booted even with the NIC
removed
Major problem:
I can only boot from a rescue disk now. I have tried to re-install COL,
install Corel Linux, and Mandrake and nothing works. I either get a "unable
to handle null pointer dereference at 00000000" or I get a "kernel panic:
unable to mount root fs on 48:08 routines 15/63 UDMA." Although, in the
case of Corel, the system just hangs. I also tried completely wiping out
the disk using the dd command, re-booted using my old W95 startup disk, used
DOS FDISK and re-created and re-formatted my hard drive and tried installing
Linux on a new partition. That didn't work either.
Help. TIA.

If the new controller does not have BIOS support, then LILO cannot boot from
it.

I would _much_ rather see the companies release enough info to let the
Linux community produce a driver without the company expecting to
establish restrictions on what kind of enhancements are possible.
After all, it would be quite possible to have the Rio software provide
something looking a whole lot like an NFS server to pretend it's just
a filesystem.
Furthermore, if the company comes out with their own "driver," this
likely means that:
a) They'll integrate all sorts of other "cruft" into it;
b) It won't work on my Alpha box;
c) It will be a 7MB fragile package that runs Their Way.
d) It will likely enforce a Captive User Interface that requires
running X.
Now, I'd really rather like to see interface software for the Nomad,
Samsung 'Yepp, DLink DMP100, Lyra, Pine D'Music, Best/Cabo, I-Jam, and
such.
I seriously doubt that between the couple-dozen choices there would be
more than just a few interfacing schemes, and having 15 different
"drivers" would just be silly.

According to the Linux on Thinkpad FAQ list, MCA is not supported.
And indeed, Linux does not recognize the presense of any hard
drive on my system, proof. As for SCSI, this is a laptop so I have
no SCSI drives.
As for MCA on PPC, I think you misunderstand what MCA is: it is
IBM's MicroChannel Architecture. It is that pre-PCI bus that
nobody uses and certainly was never used in a PPC machine.

I assume you need this for running a graphical interface under X. This
chipset has been supported by X for a year or so. I'm in the process of
upgrading to xf86 3.3.6 to pick up 6236 compatability. (xf86 4 has been
released, but I understand that not all of the drivers have yet been
incorporated.) The SVGA X Server specifically supports the 6236 and offers
acceleration -- that is, you don't have to downgrade performance in order to
achieve compatibility. I suspect it's more mature and stable than 4.0. So,
I believe I'm in your situation and I have chosen to go 3.3.6. Now, the
next and more complicated part. I happen to be running SuSE 6.0. My
research has led me to a mirror of SuSE's FTP site where I have downloaded
RPM's specifically set to upgrade X to 3.3.6 within a 6.0 install. Please
note that you need to upgrade multiple RPM's -- not just the SVGA server.
Now I'm trying to perform the upgrade using YaST.
Good luck!

Any camera that has a right connector would do. A camcorder would do nicely. You
don't need drivers since these are not software controlled.

Just make and use the setup floppies. They should recognize your CDRom. You
don't need to boot from cd.
It worked on my 486 (vintage 94) with RH, SuSE, . . .

From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Greetings all,
I have been trying for two days to install Redhat 6.2 on my laptop.
Following are the geometric specs:
7944 Cylinders
16 heads
63 sec/track
Disk is 4093 MB.
I partition the disk so that:
/boot 32 Megs
/ 400 Megs
/usr 2000 Megs
/home 1000 Megs
swap 128 Megs
/var the rest
The installation proceeds smoothly until the system reboots after I am
prompted with a message that says that the installation compeleted
successfully. Upon rebooting however, the notebook bios prompts me to insert
a bootable disk. Linux simply fails to boot. Could someone shed some light
to tell me what i am doing wrong?
Please respond to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Thanks in advance

Gee, I hope it is supported as I'm running it on some old Model 77 and 95
machines at work and unless they've magically changed, they're all MCA
boxes. As for PPC, IBM made quite a few RS/6000 models based on an upgraded
MCA spec (64 bit AFAIK), all running AIX. Linux runs just fine on the old
IBM Intel/MCA boxes, once you get past the boot problem and the fact that IBM
reverses the boot order on the SCSI chain (boots from 6, not 0) unless you
tell it different. I don't believe Linux runs on the older PPC/MCA varients
unless someone has done some porting recently.
Also, if you look in the notes for the 2.4 test kernels, I believe you'll find
reference to updates to MCA code....
There is a site for MCA stuff with boot disks etc. Don't have it here, try
searching for it.

:/boot 32 Megs

/var is good at around 100M, 200 if you're lazy and don't clean out
your old log files.
Use the remainder for /root. or something else that won't be used
much. Then at least you can shrink the partition and use the space for
something later, if your needs change.

You ::might:: have forgotten to set /boot and/or /
bootable/active/whatever when you were in FDISK. Boot the rescue
floppy, run fdisk, and make sure one of those is bootable (you might
have to play with which one to set bootable/active, I've never split
/boot off from /). I'd assume /, but like I said.... Maybe someone
else can help with this point?
