Many other 386 boards also required parity in the memory. I had one
which required it in ordinary 30-pin SIMMs.

That does the trick! Thanks a bunch.

Heh, well now linux mishandles my sound card and NIC, two pieces of hardware
that worked flawlessly under my old mobo/cpu. Im sure that it is just a
problem with a somewhat buggy KT133 chipset. I am going to upgrade to
2.2.17 and see if that helps.

Once again, thanks for the help.

So, 'stp driver' is not a listed driver. I tried to recompile Ghostscript
but I can't find 'stp driver'. If I understood right (it's not sure),
drivers are described in src/gdev* files and I didn't find anything about
'stp driver'.
I've seen in the ghostscript documentation which explains how to add a new
driver but I don't know if I must do that for 'stp driver' and if I must,
where can I find the code source because I only found Printing system
interfaces.

Thanks for your help.

No , they're not. I have a GeForce2 MX - based card. I could NOT get
this to work with stock RedHat Linux 6.2 (XFree86 3.x) - at least not
better than stock VGA mode. I am told that the earlier nvidia cards
will.

If you want your card to work, you'll need to :

a) Install XFree86 v4.0.1
b) Go to http://www.nvidia.com/Products/Drivers.nsf/Linux.html and
download the drivers from there and install them.

Be warned - the process is non-trivial. Follow the instructions on the
NVIDIA website. Be paticularly careful to ensure that your
distribution has not left any bits of the Mesa libs (an OpenGL clone)
on your system that you are unaware of. This will cause either poor
performance and/or failure of X to start at all.

In my experience, it is best to install both XFree86 4.0.1 and the
NVIDIA drivers from .tar.gz files, even if you are running RedHat or
another .rpm - base distro. I had some problems with the .rpms of the
drivers - my system did not work properly until I re-installed tem
using the tarballs.

I hope I have not put you off - the final result is well worth it!

Regards,

Barry Wilkes.

Does anyone have C/H/S values for an LS120?

The old BIOS in the PC on which I'm trying to use the LS120 doesn't
autodetect it, so I will need to manually enter the values.
(I believe that it has 1736 tracks when used with a 120MB disk?)

I'm hoping that by making the LS120 the IDE bus master, and setting the
boot seqence to C: then A:, that I'll be able to boot from a 1.44 Mb
floppy.

Hi,

To get my HP Laserjet 4L setup with Mandrake 7.1, I've been told to
install the rhs-printfilters-1.62-6mdk package using rpmdrake. I've
located the package on one of the CD's that came with the distribution,
but so far have been unable to install.

Any help would be appreciated.

The 386SX is limited to 16 megs. Since some of the address space is used
for ROM, I/O, etc., most 386SX boards will max out somewhere before that
(the one I used to have supported up to 8, with two 4Mx9 SIMMs).

The 386DX supports more memory, but since that's not what you're running,
it's not an issue here.

One other consideration would be to make sure the distributions you're
trying to run include FPU emulation in the kernel. If they don't, you'll
need to track down a 387SX if you don't already have one.

You can set it up as a router or maybe a text-based Internet terminal
(including telnet and lynx), but you'll find it's a bit slow at nearly
anything else. (Kernel compiles on the 386SX I used to have used to take
over an hour, and that was for pre-v1.0 kernels with support for not much
oddball hardware...QIC-02 support was about the only extra hardware support
I needed.)

... but perhaps it's in order to note that the printer's performance
as a Samba printer for Windows clients has zilch do to with the Linux
printer driver. After the magicfilter has done a little thinking,
it will cat to the printer exactly the binary image which was produced
by the printer driver on the Windows client.

Where was it found? In the hardware section? It will be. Even if you
recompile the kernel to remove IDE-CD support, dmesg will show it finding
the IDE CD drive. (if you recompile the kernel for CDRW support, without
IDE CD capability, with SCSI, SCSI-CD, generic SCSI driver (with vendor
extensions) and ide-scsi; dmesg will show it finding the IDE CD and later
will show it handled as a scsi device).

Can you mount it as /dev/hdc (mount -t iso9660 /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom) (if
you have the empty directory /mnt/cdrom, of course)?

As you're doing it all with modules, after modprobe/insmod the modules
necessary, can you mount it using the scsi device it reports? Does
"cdrecord -scanbus" show it?

You shouldn't have to use the BIOS to use the LS120. Just create a
directory-mount e.g. /mnt/ls120 and add a line to /etc/fstab :
/dev/hdx /mnt/ls120 msdos noauto,owner,rw 0 0
(where x is the IDE-port, a,b,c or d)
This should work. Then you can directly mount it by 'mount /dev/hdx' and
accessing it by 'cd /mnt/ls120' or something like that.

Good luck
