Can anyone tell me how to detect my modem?
I'm running RedHat 6.2 an Win 98 on a Toshiba laptop. I looked at my specs
and the HOWTO, and it is supported, but I didn't understand the HOWTO. My
modem is on COM Port 2. I am fairly new with Linux, so would someone mind
explaining to me what I have to do?
Thanx

Subject: RH6.2: how to mount ATAPI ZIP drive automatically at startup?
Date: Sun, 24 Sep 2000 19:18:21 GMT
Hi guys. I am trying to mount my internal ATAPI ZIP drive automatically at
startup.
I use RedHat 6.2, a basic installation from a RH6.2 CDROM. I use Gnome as my
X-Window application, and Enlightenment as my Window Manager.
I know that my ZIP drive is named hdc4.
I have added these lines to/etc/fstab:
/dev/hdc4 /mnt/zipdos vfat noauto,rw,user,sync,mode=0777
/dev/hdc4 /mnt/zip ext2 noauto,rw,user,nosuid,sync
I would like to be able to mount the ZIP drive automatically when I start
Gnome (by typing startx).
Any ideas?
Many thanks.
Kind regards,
Eric

I've encountered a strange problem trying to convert my Inspiron 5000
laptop into a dual-boot Windows/Linux system.
The automatic installation for Mandrake Linux 7.1 worked fine, with the
hard disk partitioned for 8 MB for Windows and 3.5 MB for Linux, and I
even managed to manually configure XFree86 3.3.x for the 1400 by 1050
LCD screen. (The wheel on my OED Logitech mouse and my internal Lucent
WinModem remained DOA, though.)
However, after about a week, when I rebooted the system, after the
"stage1 stage2" message I was kicked out to the "grub>" prompt, as the
master boot record seemed to have become corrupt. The first time this
occurred, I ran the Dell diagnostics, but didn't find any problems, and
booting up on the rescue diskette worked fine; I could see the hard disk
OK, but trying to run Windows generated a "VFAT Device Initialization
Failed" error message.
I phoned Dell that Friday evening and quickly received a "fix": fdisk
/mbr. This restored the master boot record, but of course I had to
re-install Linux.
Just over a week later, the same thing happened. This time, I had run
Norton AntiVirus 2000 before shutting down Windows, to check the MBR; no
problems were reported. Again, I was kicked out to "grub>", until I ran
fdisk /mbr.
Is there anything else that I need to do to get Windows 98 SE and
Mandrake Linux to co-exist, or am I just SOL? Does Win98SE write to the
MBR at shutdown every once in a while?
Thanks for you assistance.

Hi,
I am trying to install linux on a serie of old Olivetti pc M4 Modulo P75 but
I am quickly stopped. I tried ReadHat 6.1/6.2, Suse 6.3 and Corel and I
always got the same display problem very soon during the installation. The
display is not updated anymore and nothing is diplayed on the screen while
some activity remains on the cdrom ( a few seconds). The embedded display
adapter is a "Trident 9685/9680/9682/9385/9382/9385-1 PCI" (info coming from
Win98).
Does anyone knows how to solve that situation ?
Thanks for any inputs
Pierre.

A good place to start might be:
http://www.cs.utexas.edu/users/kharker/linux-laptop/#specific_models
where you'll probably be able to locate the laptop model
and see if the modem has a supported chipset.

What do you want to do with your modem? It doesn't display under /dev ,
that's normal. It's on com 2, that's all.

Take a close look at those lines in the /etc/fstab, see if anything
jumps out at you. You know, like the "noauto" option. ; ) Take that out of
there, and it will work.

I use my 3Com 56K ext. Faxmodem with linux(RedHat 6.1 and Corel 1.1) and
have no problems what so ever.
As for V.90 and X2 support, I think that you will just have to check the box
a little better. Myne support both v.90 and x2.

Ups,
What gs do you have. I think GNU Ghostscript 5.50 (2000-2-13) is

I have an I5000 and dual boot Mandrake & win98se. Though I haven't had
exactly the same error messages, I've had similar problems.
Every once in a while when booting up my Norton Disk Doctor
(similar to Scandisk) says that the MBR is corrupt. I tell it not
to fix it because I'm not sure what it would do. Everything seems
to be fine. I can still boot either Win98 or Linux.
My initial clue that something was wrong was when I ran
fdisk and my Linux partitions that I created in the extended
partition was no longer there (even though linux boots ok).
I recently purchased PartitionMagic and found that there was
a problem with one of the linux partitions was not linked
correctly in the extended partition. I was told that the only
solution would be to rebuild it. I have yet to do that.
Hope this helps.

I just purchased Partition Magic (which I should have done initially).

Hmm... what does NOAUTO mean?
startx is a script, so just add the line
mount /mnt/zip to it

Oh, and this link just doesn't exist by default, but it has become
practice to add it to configurators for simplicity.
