I did follow the case, but I think it is legal anyway. And, I'm in

Dell site has a Red Hat rpm with XF86 stuff in it:

http://support.dell.com/us/en/filelib/download/index.asp?fileid=R20610

Their site search capability does not get you to this, you have to
get to the file library area. I also pulled an XF86Config plain text
file from them, can't find its source now, it had modelines up to
1280x1024 (as well as many lower-res ones), I have not substituted
it for the one Mandrake came up with (which works, at 1024x768).
I have the 1280x1024 15.4" screen.

If anybody's pushed through this and has a cleaned-up, stripped-down
Inspiron XF86Config file that works with the higher-res modes,
(who really wants 320x240?) please post.

Hi folks.

I have a Maxtor 94098U6 in my Linux box, which is not recognized with
its correct size. My Linux Version is 2.2.10

LIHB-102:~ # uname -a
Linux LIHB-102 2.2.10 #28 Tue Jul 20 19:25:30 MEST 1999 i686 unknown

In the boot.msg file, the disk seems to be correctly configured as a 40GB
IDE
disk.

When I try to configure it with fdisk I only get 6991456 blocks:

LIHB-102:~ # fdisk /dev/hdc

The number of cylinders for this disk is set to 13872.
There is nothing wrong with that, but this is larger than 1024,
and could in certain setups cause problems with:
1) software that runs at boot time (e.g., LILO)
2) booting and partitioning software from other OSs
   (e.g., DOS FDISK, OS/2 FDISK)

Command (m for help): p

Can anybody tell me how to configure the disk to have the missing 33GB
available.

Thanks in advance! maddel!

It works for me.

I compiled my kernel with:
Block Devices - SCSI emulation support
SCSI Support - SCSI CD-ROM support, SCSI Generic support

I then put:
append="hdc=ide-scsi hdd=ide-scsi"
into my lilo.conf

Can't remember too much about it to be honest.

IIRC the diskspace required was a little nasty when compared with the
quality. But then a lot of the quality problems would have been down to the
sources I was using (mostly television). I think it was in the range of
gigabytes per hour which is not really what you want. The quality wasn't
terrific but as I've said that was probably down to the sources. I haven't
tried with a proper video source. The resolution could be just about
anything but once you got above 640x480 frames started dropping out all over
the place. The framerate is obviously the opposite, you can get a decent
framerate if your capture resolution is relatively small. Anything too large
and you can forget it.

Not wonderful but not bad for the price. It did what I wanted and it will
continue to do so, I hope, I'm hoping to do some video editing with it in
the near future, if I can get a decent balance between all the above. I'll
let you know how it works out.

I am trying to setup a network card on a 486 running Linux.

I edited the conf.module file and on boot up my network card is
detected, hardware address and every thing.

I tried modprobe | tail and recieved message saying:
Tx timed out, excess collisions, TSR=0x1e, ISR=0x8, t=1000.

I noticed also that the little green light on the card is no longer lit.

I am new to this stuff so please go easy.

I have read FAQ but can't find mention of this prob.

Anyone any ideas?

Hello,

I want to make a dual-PIII based beowulf cluster, but I don't know which
moterboard to use.
I thought to the MSI-6321 (aka 694D pro) but some users report some
trouble about this under linux. Does some of you try this motherboard?
Do you know some good dual PIII motherboad?
Which dual-PIII motherboad do you use in yours clusters or workstations?

I wouldn't have anything against a reset if it would work and reset the
device. Because I don't know what is the reason for resetting the only
problem I seem to have is excessive resets :)
You are right, maybe I didn't make myself clear enough.

>In the host adapter BIOS, turn off all the special features, like SYNCHRONOUS,

A good point, though things didn't get much better (the only difference
was indeed the speed). I disabled synchronous and wide negotiations and
disconnecting and still something goes wrong.

It's kind of weird to me that the thing that goes wrong does go wrong only
occasionally. I mean I can use the partitions on that drive normally and
then - suddenly - it starts to go wrong. It seems quite random, as it's
not even caused by heavy i/o activity, it can happen anytime.

>This will make that device a little slower, but you don't seem to care about

Speed comes after usability :)

Damn. The more I think of this the more I'm sure I'll have to invest in a
new scsi drive.

I am in a similar position. One of the vendors I usually work with
proposed the Gigabyte GA-6VXD7, which is based in a VIA chipset
(VT82C694X, VT82C686A). One of the reasons I am still hesitating
is that I have not yet seen someone saying that he is using it
and it works well.

        http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/gigabyte-web/products/6vxd7.htm

(BTW, this motherboard, along with several other Gigabyte motherboards
use a Creative CT5880 sound chip, which I think is the same or similar
to the sound chips used in Sound Blaster boards. Is this supported by
Linux ?)

Some people in this group (pc.hardware.chips) have praised Serverworks
chipsets. While searching for dual processor boards on Asus web page,
I found this one:
http://www.asus.com.tw/products/motherboard/pentiumpro/cur-dls/index.html

It costs more than $700 (pricewatch: $695), so, even considering that
it integrates a graphics chip (only 4 MB), an ethernet chip and maybe
a SCSI controller (I am not sure about that), it is a bit expensive.

> I thought to the MSI-6321 (aka 694D pro)

http://www.msicomputer.com/products/detail.asp?ProductID=150

It is also based on the VIA 694X chipset. Most characteristics seem
similar to the Gigabyte (at a glance, I don't have time now to do
a point by point comparison, but I already noticed that it doesn't
have the "Dual BIOS" (or similar feature) that Gigabyte has).

Seems interesting and I could also get one of these, so I would also
be interested in comments on it. At $150 in Pricewatch the price is
also interesting.
